  1. I really think that's trying hard to avoid the real issue: the democratic base doesn't turn out for local elections and there are a myriad of reasons but gerrymandering isn't nearly as big a factor as you are making it out to be. It's great to have liberal values at President, but losing so badly at the local and congressional level is what is creating the fight you feel you need the President for. If you weren't losing those elections so badly, the Presidential one may not seem as critical.
  2. I'd worry FAR more about who is in the Congress than the Supreme Court. Yet it appears most Democrats don't. The Supreme Court might be the last line of defense, but you're basically abdicating every other line before that. That's where women's health and other issues is truly being lost. (On the state and federal level)
  3. There is a right-wing bloc and a left-wing bloc on the court. What matters is that there are competent, independent swing votes. I think even if there was a heavy-handed right winger you're still going to see most cases resolved sensibly as they have been with those two swinging back and forth. I don't worry about who Trump or Carson or Cruz will nominate because none of those half-wits will ever make it that far.
  4. No, it's not. Many Republicans didn't like Romney, Rubio is far more likely to carry the base with his social conservative track record. Republican voting base is pretty stable. That is not the case for Democrats. I fear that most of what carried Obama was a surge of voting that may not be sustainable. (And hasn't been in non-presidential elections where Democrats have gotten their butts handed to them time and again)
  5. Casey was 25 years ago. I tend to respect Kennedy's view on Hobby Lobby, which is a complicated case. Though Stevens and the dissent were right about Citizens United. The ACA survived by one vote by a Republican nominee - Roberts. We have two pretty independent thinkers on the court in Roberts and Kennedy, so I'm really not sure it's as important as most Democrats fear.
  6. It really wouldn't. Ohio has a Republican governor who presided over a decent economic turnaround. Pennsylvania will be harder but far from impossible. You seem to be confused about one thing. This isn't about Rubio stealing 5% of Democrat voters. He just needs to maintain Romney's, get 1-2%, and hope for low Democrat turnout. Low Democrat turnout will always be their biggest fear and perhaps with it being Hillary there will be issues driving out the vote that surged Obama.
  7. Not really. It would just require PA, OH, and FLA to flip. If Rubio has FLA he would already be the biggest chunk of the way there. Obama beat Romney 50.7% to 47.% in 2012 in Ohio Obama beat Romney 51.97% to 46.59% in 2012 in Pennsylvania So no, it would not need to be "very major" at all.
  8. Except that misses my point. Neither side really seems to be abusing things nor does it appear with the current constitution of the court that one vote is going to swing anything. Certainly not on anything that would likely be settled by a stare decisis basis coming on 50 years now. I'm just speaking practically. There are more valid women's health reasons to vote democrat, the Supreme Court really isn't that much of a factor. I'd worry much more about congressional legislation than that.
  9. It's really not. It's just a handful of swing states that really determine most elections and it's not out of the realm of possibility if Rubio can win Florida for the Republicans to win the election.
  10. Maybe, but they continue to dominate the non-Presidential elections. So they're not as dead in the water as many of us would hope. The demographics don't matter much if they don't vote.
  11. There is also something to be said that both Obama and Bush get criticized for picking people who aren't on the right "side" by their parties. I think the Supreme Court angle is a bit overblown. So long as a few people have good consciences (and they do, including a Bush nominee in Roberts), it's a fairly low level concern IMO.
  12. I don't know where I stand on her potential competency, but I really can't stand the idea of rewarding someone with my vote for basically being a political husk. I want less people like that. It's part of what made for Obama twice so refreshing.
  13. He clearly was singing at like 75% for a few seconds there in the middle. Someone should've tried to punch him for that lack of effort.
  14. Ervin Santana in CF is only slightly less gag-inducing, that's the sad part.
  15. People are seriously using a freaking month of Aaron Hicks to suggest he's better than Rosario? For one, Rosario was far less mistake prone as a fielder. For two, Eddie Rosario's first 400 ABs trounce Hicks. We're talking about a guy with 45 XBH in 437 PAs, it took Aaron Hicks over 700 PAs to match that. Please, don't cherry pick Rosario's one lacking stat with the one Hicks managed to keep decent (OBP) to make your argument. It complete ignores basically every other aspect of baseball in which Rosario has demonstrated much more success and a more sustainable future.
  16. Hillary Clinton is the embodiment of all jokes and scorn we level at politicians. Just because she's not as openly groan-worthy as Ted Cruz or Donald Trump doesn't she doesn't have a litany of things to dislike.
  17. I'm going to be sad this show is gone again for a year.
  18. Ewww....Santana as the starting CF.
  19. Rubio could absolutely sway me over Clinton. You have to remember, moderates are going to go "eww....Hillary" when they see the likely Democratic nominee so the middle IS winnable by a Republican that is just willing to not say incredibly stupid things. I think Rubio is willing to be a rational, not brazenly stupid candidate. Ted Cruz is nothing else but a brazenly stupid, irrational candidate. Guys like Cruz and Carson are far closer to being Trump than they are a viable candidate.
  20. I have a feeling Rubio will be far more centric if he wins the nomination. Cruz can't help his own stupidity and offensively neo-con nature. Cruz will outright offend away enough people like me who would vote fiscal conservative with his other nonsense to be unelectable.
  21. Maybe we can hope Arcia has a big camp and DH is a platoon or a 50/50 share?
  22. The problem certainly is partially that, though. At this point our offense is banking on Buxton and Park being better than Hicks and Hunter. That's not encouraging. Moving Sano takes away a position much easier to fill with an impact LH hitter. Or an impact hitter of any kind. In the name of Plouffe/Mauer. I truly believe that's going to hurt this team until they choose a different path.
  23. If the Twins signed Span that would help a number of fronts, but I doubt any legit CFer is coming here with Buxton in the wings.
  24. Oh I agree about the disaster and I don't rule out the Republicans winning. I rule out Ted "Gomer" Cruz from winning.
  25. Last year the team was 26th in the league against RHP versus 14th against LHP. I call that a place in need of improvement. Having the husk of Mauer, the enigma of Escobar, and Rosario as your only left-handed bats is definitely worrisome. It's going to be hard to improve the offense without hitting right-handed pitching better and the ceiling for that improvement with the current lineup is pretty limited. Granted, Arcia/Kepler are their own enigma, but I continue to believe this team is going to adjust things around Plouffe and Mauer until it blows up in their face.
