  1. Right, the trend this could create is very troubling for free speech. Line up outside the event, hold up your signs, maybe even try and strike up aconversation, or chant away. But going into the event and parading up and down the aisles, coming on stage, and making noise through the candidate is just really unacceptable. It opens the door for waves of obnoxious conservatives in Mississippi doing the same to a Bernie rally. Only they may come armed. What really irks me is that these idiot protesters are actually making me defend Trump.
  2. Why does condemnation have to come in the form of a fastball at the player? Players actually get hurt by that. Clubhouses, behind the scenes, should be having those conversations. Not hurling 90 mph heaters at the other team. That's just eye-for-an-eye nonsense that no one but athletes and gang members seem to think is a viable form of problem solving.
  3. I'll go with the over...a full season of Wieters plus better depth helps them squeak by the over.
  4. Free speech is one of those issues in which the slippery slope is a very valid argument.
  5. There are multiple parties at fault here and both sides are increasing the tension in different ways. Neither side should get a pass.
  6. When I talk about the Twins, I call them the Twins...not list them all alphabetically so there is no confusion. It's a built in hueristic, if we couldn't categorize in conversation....we'd drive ourselves insane having basic social interactions. So...not really.
  7. I guess I figure if they have leftist views. That makes them part of the left. Just like part of the right is sorta racist. Labels are used for ease of conversation.
  8. I haven't seen right-wing college students protesting speakers. This phenomenon is very new and centered primarily around young liberals. It's the "trigger warnings" and all the other nonsense. They went out to try and shut down that rally and that is not something I can ever recall a conservative group doing. This has been a natural progression of a growing trend on the left. And the left should be the ones taking the higher ground on this, not being even worse.
  9. According to several media reports the protests were intended to stop the rally, not just protest is views. To me that is an important distinction.
  10. Labeling it hate speech is not the problem. Label away. The problem is trying to suppress ideas we don't like by trying to stop them from being spoken. Bill Maher and a host of comedians, professors, and others of liberal tendencies have been outspoken about this growing trend on the left. Particularly young liberals. In some circles, the battle of ideas isn't worth the time and effort. Better to bully people out of speaking by force of confrontation. (To be fair, some on the right are doing this too, just not to the same frequency)
  11. Protesting is acceptable, but it's come out that the express purpose of the protests was to shut down the rally. A) as others have said, that feeds Trump not stops him. B ) That's not what free speech and protest are about. It has the concept completely ass-backwards. You beat hate speech and fear and violence with reason and peace. It has become an increasing tactic of liberals to shut down speech they disagree with. It's one of many issues both sides are doing that is creating divisiveness. But this, principally, should be everything that liberals stand against.
  12. Bjelica seems like he needs some NBA coaching for a bit and he can be an effective second team scorer. But I do think that puts a priority on having a good backup at center that can defend the rim. Bjelica and Shabazz just aren't good enough as a combo. I like the best player available idea, but I think shooting has to be a priority.
  13. It absolutely IS relevant. If you are going to argue self policing in baseball keeps it "classy", you just heard one of the sheriffs tell you in no uncertain terms that Bautista represents everyone of his race. There is a reason we abandoned the a Wild West model of self policing - the odds are MUCH higher to get abusive disgusting people in charge of the "law". It results in unnecessary injury, inconsistent enforcement, and too much influence from emotion. Unless, based on your personal experience, you think the Wild West was an effective way to enforce the law.
  14. I think there is a good chance he'd have been yelling and fist pumping his excitement. And I'd be just fine with that.
  15. If you didn't see exuberance in that Bautista reaction, I'm not sure what you were watching. Did it "show up the pitcher"? I guess that depends how thin your skin is. I'd have cared more about blowing the game than the bat flip.
  16. I don't see much difference between what Bautista did versus Fisk or even Kirby Puckett. He celebrated a massive emotional moment and for that he's a disgrace to everyone that shares his skin color apparently and some of you are actually siding with the idiot that said that. Idiots like Gossage and Bertuzzi are the bannermen of unwritten rules - those are the types that are deciding what should or should not be enforced. It took an on ice assault for hockey to learn, what's it going to take for baseball?
  17. The unwritten rules are in the eye of the beholder. The true motive? Not staying classy, more like what Jon Baker said (paraphrasing) 'unwritten rules exist because the sport of baseball minimizes opportunity for retaliation" That's what it's about, straight from a player - it's about retaliating about being butthurt. After Bertuzzi the NHL took the power of policing away and the game is safer today. The two slide rule changes the last two year stake us closer to the same. Then the McCarthys, Gibsons, Gossages, and Rockers of the world are no longer in charge of deciding the decorum. Like it or not, you are taking the side of a guy who went on an ignorant racist rant - and he meant every word. That's the guy holding the baseball.
  18. Well, we've predictably started the descent into madness.
  19. I've been critical of Rubio's shooting too. More than anything I wish he could finish a damn layup. It's frustrating to watch him pass up a lay-up for a contested shot from the perimeter. But he's an invaluable player for this team, that's clear.
  20. In terms of revenue, baseball is second to the NFL. Going by ticket sales is stacking the deck. I don't think any of the sports are in danger of losing fans if this goes one way or the other. The real question is, do you really want to agree with a loudmouth racist like Gossage? Because those are the true keepers of the code. It's them you are trusting to operate self-policing when you choose to keep these rules unwritten rather than written. I, for one, am glad the game is moving further and further away from them every year. I hope in my lifetime most of them are gone and no one eats a fastball in the teeth for the audacity of bunting against a shift. Or no one has their leg broken by a kamikaze slide. Then I can watch the actual athletes play the actual game.
  21. With Dieng's play lately, are we back to looking for the right wing player? A big SF that can shoot perhaps or am I reading into Dieng's play too much?
  22. Is that it? Or is there always another butthurt racist like Gossage that'll come along and make something out of nothing? The unwritten rules didn't stop Todd Bertuzzu, or Chase Utley, or anyone else that deliberately set out to hurt someone for "the code" Like I said, if you want this "classy" stuff to continue - actually codify it. Stop letting the likes of Gossage or Papelbon set the terms.
  23. The reductions have been specific. I actually agree that there is still plenty of it in both leagues.
  24. If their system of government worked, we'd have seen an end to all those practices years ago.
