  1. While I think a "blow-out" is possible, just because Trump is so incredibly stupid.....I also can't rule anything out. Trump has somehow managed to galvanize and maintain support despite a litany of things I'd have said would destroy him. I'm past the point of thinking he gets blown out. I'm at the point of just hoping he loses - however that has to happen. And I'm not all that confident it's going to happen. Things have just been too damn bizarre so far to be confident in anything.
  2. I think a lot of this is Pohlad talking to an 11 year old and trying to tailor his remarks to that. I think that's where the weirdness of the "fun" comments come from. I wouldn't take this too seriously.
  3. Sure, but there may be a host of reasons for that this year. I don't expect things to go according to much of a plan.
  4. Ohio is not that clear. Neither is Florida. Just sayin.
  5. It makes me sad that my first thought with this wasn't "Yes! Can't wait to see him!", but instead "I wonder if we'll even see him". Ugh.
  6. The answer to this question is the same answer to all such "Who Aggressively should the Twins trade Player X" Answer: Very aggressive. Other than a handful of young guys there shouldn't be a single name safe on this roster. That said, I'd be ok with Nunez staying around if the Twins get low-balled. Hell, I'd rather have him than Plouffe, Park, Mauer, and a host of other guys. But I'd still shop him.
  7. This second round catcher seems to have a lot to like, am I missing something or does he seem like really solid value?
  8. I'm always in favor of drafting hitters in favor of pitchers in the first. So I'm on board in principle!
  9. Oh I'm with you about tech. My 3 year old doesn't even understand how a cell phone works because he's so accustomed to face-time that he thinks all communication is face to face. I'm young to remember that being a common "thing of the future" gag. So I'm with you. Where I'm more cautious is in predicting what that will look like. At the rate we're accelerating, who's to say we don't just skip the automation-kills-jobs phase and go right to colonizing Mars? I just have serious doubts about being able to be prepared for what technological advancement will bring us until they arrive.
  10. Judging "in shape" by pounds is obnoxiously misguided. If you read Russe you'd think Sano looks like Prince Fielder. My eye test is failing me on that argument.
  11. I wouldn't make these changes based on automation or changing work forces. Anticipating future technology is like spitting in the wind. I would do this, almost exclusively, because it is a much more direct fix for poverty. It guts all the red tape and nonsense out of government programs and gives people what they need to live. But I'd hope it would still leave enough desire for a higher quality standard of living that at least one person in every household would be working. I think that's critical.
  12. Especially if they had, you know, played him at third and gotten rid of Plouffe. And yeah, I don't get what Reusse's deal is with bashing players about their weight. He's hyper-focused on that for some reason.
  13. I'm not opposed to a guaranteed basic income if it does two things along with it (one of which your articles hints at): 1) Abolish virtually all welfare programs. There can be some programs and incentives for single mothers or things of that nature, but I'd love to see how much we'd actually save by getting rid of the programs in place and just distributing those dollars directly to people as a guarantee. That way we're not talking about adding to the budget but, in my estimation, likely cutting it. 2) The income stays low enough to require some sort of employment buy-in. Mike and I talked about this earlier and my biggest concerns with this would be turning the country into two classes: the consumers vs. the providers. I can't imagine the system can even continue if that relationship got hostile.
  14. You can also create some pretty bad teams with guys who flashed ability but could never figure it out. When your catcher basically rolls out the red carpet for you to eat a fist - that tells me a lot.
  15. Oliver clearly leans a little left, but it's hard not to in today's world. But he hasn't been shy about taking on anyone of any political persuasion. He's fearless, biting, and his staff clearly does their research. His show is appointment television for me and I can count the shows that have that distinction on one hand.
  16. I would say your use of the word "likely" is way over doing it. Not everyone that throws 99 can be fixed and it becomes even harder when what is broken is between the ears.
  17. So says his own team. Clearly his own catcher. His manager. So, not just me. The people who know him best.
  18. He is, but he also qualifies under the second category too.
  19. It's already happening in hockey. There are articles every year about the demise of the "hockey goon". Since those two on-ice assaults (Bertuzzi and McSorely) the NHL sort of had to confront the self-policing mentality. It's pretty clear the league doesn't buy any of those arguments and they're striving to end that mentality. Change from this can come from a lot of different motivations. You're right that money may be part of it. I like to think that players just want to play and be healthy too. I can't imagine guys like Posey or Kang enjoy losing their season because some guy wanted to try the minuscule odds of breaking up the DP. It's just not worth the cost. And the thing is, if you REALLY hate that guys watch home runs or flip bats - then punish them too. Do whatever, just stop thinking self-policing is going to take it away. We've been playing the game a century and guys are still flipping bats and throwing at each other all the time. The NFL passed some tackling penalties and hockey some hitting penalties and in less than 5 years both games changed dramatically. That is where real change will come from, not self-policing. (Look at the start of this thread, it's clowns like this that are in charge of the policing)
  20. Hmmm, Brown does check a lot of boxes.
  21. No it is not, it results in a penalty of the batter getting to go to first and the league punishes it with suspensions and fines. So no, this is false.
  22. Yes, you can swear at someone in a bar, I'm not sure what bars you've been in. Swinging a bat is also allowed, just don't hit anyone with it. You can't tackle people, but tackling is a systemically allowed part of a game. Throwing baseballs at people for staring at their homerun is not. I'll say that again, this is a point you seem unwilling to contemplate. Tackling is allowed in football. It's part of what makes the game football. There is nothing about baseball that requires you to throw at people or slide into their knees. It is not part of what makes it baseball. That's what people like to believe to justify what they like (BLOOD!), but it's not true.
  23. And my point is that no workplace I have ever worked in was the option of being punched or harmed for any of the things you listed a real thing. Or a way of policing conduct. If that were to have happened at any of those workplaces (and any, really, outside of sports) the offender would have been fired and potentially sued or held criminally responsible. The only reason they still happen in sports is the misguided machismo that a punch in the face, a baseball in the ribs, a dirty elbow, a check from behind, or any other form of violence somehow teaches a lesson. It doesn't. It just results in violence. You're welcome, by the way, to be entertained by that. I enjoy MMA and boxing, I played and loved football. I just don't wrap myself in some false notion of what I'm entertained by. And I don't cheer for it to happen for BS reasons.
  24. Yeah, I just know he had interest in being part of this presidential cycle (possibly), seems like that might be a way to do that. He could use it as a jumping off point for his own future run too. Just tossing stuff at the wall though.
