  1. Yeah, here is my conclusion on Kaine: This is exactly the kind of rational, real world decision maker everyone should want helping to run their government. If you're complaining about this guy, you're looking for the wrong things in elected officials.
  2. I would argue your second point is entirely the problem. The loans for the last 10-20 years have been a reflection of it. I consider government forgiveness of those loans an apology for "we screwed this up for all of you, let us undo this catastrophe of unintended consequences" Between child care and student loans, you don't have to look far to see why there is absolutely no spending power in the middle class right now.
  3. Dave - Many careers require college training and simply don't pay enough to account for student loans. At least, not without having to pay them off for 30 years where you see a sizable portion of your spending power sucked up every month for those 30 years.
  4. I can see that. I think his campaign certainly demystified those terms or, at the very least, shows they aren't quite as Voldemort-y as previously thought. I just think that one issue is what brought him as far as he got. That's to his credit too. At some point someone was going to have to, I don't know, talk to a random sampling of 20-40 year olds and find out just how crippling student loan debt really is. Any of us that took our college degrees and went out to help people and serve the general public are absolutely straddled by it.
  5. You're right about that, Bernie picked a very smart issue and rode it (and his other positions) into much more celebrity than I would've expected. I'm not sure how much appetite there really was for Bernie's politics, though. I think there was a lot of appetite for his message generally, but specifically I think it was really just one issue that mattered. Even still, won't these same voters just settle again? If so, then I don't think her VP choice matters much, like most VP picks.
  6. We're going to disagree here Dave. The truth is, it isn't hardened adults that took these loans out, most of them were 18-20 year olds with no concept of money and who constantly heard promises about how much more money they'd make with their college degree. We're going to have to basically forgive a bunch of these loans for a couple reasons - 1) to reset the college financing system (Bernie's big mistake - he basically sided with the bad guy on this issue) and 2) to be perhaps the single smartest economic recovery plan anyone could conceive.
  7. I don't think the Democratic primary was nearly as telling as some people like to think it was. I think it showed really one thing - there are a lot of white people 20-35 crippled by student loans. A monkey with a funny hat holding up signs promising to do away with that issue was going to generate a lot of interest. Nothing more, nothing less.
  8. VP picks are about doing no harm. This was the guy that does no harm. I think it's a perfectly fine choice. He's a capable, rational politician. Shouldn't that be exactly what we want and not someone that checks a bunch of crazy boxes?
  9. Many people do feel it's broken. 20 years ago you didn't sit through 20 minutes of extra commercial time from the 6th-9th because managers want to look smart in how they manage their bullpen. And there are a ton of other ways to speed things up to just make the game feel more crisp and less deliberately slow.
  10. Pitching WAR and hitting WAR are composed of entirely different measures of performance. If you want to use WAR in this case, the only way you should do that is by saying something to the effect of "Kepler is much better by WAR relative to other rookie hitters compared to how much better Fulmer is by WAR relative to other pitchers" Otherwise you completely derailed in your use of the stat. And most of you are completely misusing it because you're comparing something barely better than saying 3.23 ERA < .350 OBP. Barely.
  11. Does he have to win people over? Look, there are two factors here none of us have the answers to: 1) How many typical non-voters are coming out to rage vote for Trump? and 2) How much of the Democrat's base that came out for Obama return to the polls for Hillary? I don't pretend to know the answer to either, but I think these questions are the ones that hold the answer. Not whether or not Trump can sway anyone.
  12. The last two are hard to pin on the NRA..... What attacks like this speak to are the GOPs heavy-handed "we're all unsafe!" rhetoric. When children are being killed in a McDonalds you start to wonder if they really are being hyperbolic. (They are...but things are a bit scary too)
  13. I could seriously care less about using WAR to judge pitcher vs. hitter. That to me, again, is misusing the statistic.
  14. Here's something to consider: Has Trump, thorugh sheer bombasity, de-elited himself no matter how much money he has? (Sorry, invented a few words there perhaps) He is an elite, but are enough people fooled by his persona to look past that? With Romney, he had no way to appeal to your average blue caller person. Trump does by simply not giving a *#^$ what he says. And to Brock's point - never underestimate the stupidity of the average person, nor how many average people there are. I think we're talking about a voting electorate for this coming election unlike any we've seen before. How it turns out, I have no idea, but I'm confident we are in uncharted waters.
  15. I don't disagree, there is definitely plenty of contradictions at work. I mean, whatever quasi-inclusive talk happened is sort of offset by choosing Pence. Still, I didn't expect it and was caught off guard a bit. For whatever purposes it was trolled out, it's surprising that it happened. Also: Yup, I've been trying to tell some people I know that keep saying "Hillary wins in a landslide" that they are seriously underestimating the potential of this. And seriously overestimating the Democrat's voting base. Until Hillary is being sworn in....I have a bad feeling.
  16. All political speeches are platitudes, but tonight there was a lot of pro-LGBT stuff at the Republican convention. Several people were basically encouraging the party to back off the idiotic social issues. It was....interesting.
  17. It took me entirely too long to get this joke. I must be getting old.....
  18. Yeah, I don't know how anyone can argue anything other than Fulmer right now. Kepler might be the best rookie hitter though.
  19. Yeah, I'm not going to revolt if changes don't happen, but baseball would be foolish to ignore the fact that there are some issues with participation in the sport. It's losing some of it's luster and part of that may be a combination of their policies towards letting people watch games (archaic and beyond stupid) and the fact that it is probably the easiest game of the four major sports to turn off or away from for long stretches of time and barely miss much.
  20. I don't know what I'd rather have Ted Cruz do other than move to another country...... I think he wrapped a totally selfish motive in a selfless blanket. I'm not buying it.
  21. That's fine, but your position is likely to go the way of the dinosaur, so would you rather just roll over or try to find a way to be part of the solution? Pace of play, in the very near future, will be addressed and possibly quite radically.
  22. If this was all about principle, and not himself, Cruz would've stayed home like Bush and Kasich. So I don't buy it.
  23. We're planning to binge this weekend!
  24. It's funny watching Cruz talk about uniting. Even Trump isn't as divisive as that guy and the irony of his intentions only makes it worse.
  25. Reusse was talking about soccer? In which case, yes, I'd pay money not to watch soccer. That's what this is about right?
