  1. Man, you'd think in an offseason where our rotation is a wreck, the team and ownership openly stated their intent to be aggressive, the team was in the final running for the player, and the player signed for much less than expected.....that it would eliminate all the excuses. And yet here we are with people will still finding ways to give the team cover for failing to get it done. The rotation is still in shambles with ST right around the corner and they had a prime opportunity. If you can't fault them now, at what point can you just admit your objectivity is shot?
  2. You don't know that, that's your speculation. Largest bids overwhelmingly win in FA. That's reality. We chose not to have the largest bid. Period.
  3. Quite possibly...yes. You have a 0% chance if you underbid.
  4. Only to be beat out by Cleveland's 5 year 110,000,000.05 offer and we'll be told how no one wants to live where it's cold, we got beat out by a big market, and that 5 cents would have crippled our future.
  5. Why are we talking about Rose and not Bellenili? I know he signed with Philly, but he would've seemed like a better fit.
  6. Now you're not even trying. Or trying too hard.
  7. Fair enough, your last paragraph is a part people really don't seem to get: The big markets were largely non-factors this season. It's not like we went into the usual FA fight armed with a butter knife against the tanks of NY and LA. Everyone came to this fight with sporks and we couldn't even muster up the courage to get out the butter knife.
  8. It comes from having full stadiums and a fan base passionate for the team. Which generally comes from winning. Which we won't do with this rotation.
  9. What does it matter? If philosophically we seem opposed to even treading in those waters we have our answer either way. And look, the team can draw the line in the sand where it wants and if we find where that line is we can discuss it then. What I'm done hearing is the same old song and dance about how players are turning down our superior offers because it's Minnesota. The only thing about Minnesota that makes players turn down offers here is our consistent approach of offering inferior contracts. Period.
  10. My only argument is to stop making excuses. The Twins had a variety of options to make this happen. They chose not to after declaring it a priority. I fault them for their choice, regardless of the reason.
  11. Doesn't this all but settle the fact that the Twins knew they were offering a lesser contract (by not offering the opt out) and did so anyway?
  12. No one is arguing it is a "fact" the Twins offered less. Here are the facts we do know: Darvish did not sign with the Twins. The deal he did sign was considerably below expectations. The Twins front office themselves acknowledge FA ultimately comes down to dollars and cents. MLBPA and players are not going around refusing larger contracts because it sets a bad precedent and they are heavily pressured to get the best they can by their peers. So is it possible the Twins offered more? Sure. It's also possible I could pitch better than Yu Darvish this year by inventing a magic potion. But what is the far more likely answer? The fantasy land being put forward where the Twins just, aw shucks, can't get anyone to sign here no matter how much they offer is tired. And incredibly unlikely. Almost as tired as Mauer value discussions. And about as unlikely as those discussions going away in the middle of threads that have nothing to do with Mauer. We failed our priority in a free agency period rife with bargains. Stop with the excuses. Please.
  13. C'mon now, you invoked Occam's Razor and I don't think it's your friend here. Again, the Twins FO have said themselves that dollars and cents decide these deals. We decided not to beat that offer. And, again, we easily could have. You're not going to get any discounts on your tickets or your cable for it, it's just money that will go nowhere. Meanwhile you'll endure a cavalcade of inferior starters throughout the year. There really isn't any serious way to spin this as a positive result.
  14. According to a team called the Minnesota Twins the ultimate decider of FA contracts is one thing..... Money. So yes. We passed on giving more money. And we still have gaping holes in our rotation with pitchers and catchers reporting in a week or so.
  15. The worst part? This is as passive a market as we're likely to ever see, the Twins had plenty of spending money, and available players that fit those needs who had interest in coming here. And we passed. There are no excuses for that.
  16. I've already answered. And it wasn't the entire market. It was this modest contract that he signed. Money is what matters. This was completely in the realm of being beat by the Twins.
  17. He's a pitcher. We need two. And he's a good pitcher. And he's coming at a relative discount compared to expectations. And we were on a shortlist that had a shot.
  18. Virtually every large money investment in a player is risk you're almost certainly going to lose out on over time. So if that's why you're scared....you might as well vote for contraction for the team. There's no point in even trying. This was a very, very beatable offer. Maybe Darvish didn't really want to come here, but can we save those excuses this time? Because at some point all the ways we try to reason why this "can't" ever happen sound so defeatist I'm not sure why anyone even cares about the team at all. The team itself has said the factor that matters most is money. We could've beat the money on this deal. Handily. We didn't. The excuses can end right there. We don't have to wallow in it, but quit spinning this as anything other than a disappointment we could've avoided.
  19. We'll have to see what the new OC wants - I kind of hope he's as aggressive in FA as he will be in his play calling. Smart but aggressive.
  20. I just worry that he was more a product of a smart coach then a changed man. His track record prior to this year was not strong. Hell, he barely beat out Taylor Heinecke for the 3rd QB role. I struggle to want to invest in that. Plus I think Cousins is a significantly more talented QB. However, if we do keep Keenum, I would really like us to take a QB in the second round. My personal favorite is Luke Falk.
  21. 49ers frontloaded Jimmy G's deal with 37.5M against the cap this year when they have 100M available. I hope the Vikes consider the same thing with any QB they sign. (Hopefully Cousins)
  22. Aggressive OC choice. I like it.
