  1. Pittsburgh and a few other teams developed a reputation for taking other team's castoffs and under-performers and finding ways to tinker with them. If this FO can bring that kind of approach to value added FA, then it's going to go a long way towards moving the franchise forward. So much so, that I'm perfectly fine with less splashy moves as long as they can show they can "fix" guys with regularity.
  2. I'm going to keep this simple because the tone of your post makes it clear this is fruitless and I only respond because I think it circles back to the Lynn/Cobb value comments of others earlier. Falvey may not believe that FA investments lead to more wins per year over the longer view. It may result in more immediate wins, but it may result in less wins over a 10 year frame. Current spending that effects long term budget constraints may be a trade off he's not willing to make. He may be right, he may be wrong. As tight as the Pohlads keep the purse strings, I don't think we're spending to our limit right now. Which defies the idea you're suggesting that it is "irrational" to think they may not spend every red cent they have available. I think that's literally the case right now. And I think the reason for that is twofold: Ownership is tight with money and the FO doesn't want to hurt future financial flexibility with large commitments now. (Which, again, ownership probably really likes)
  3. Possibly he would. When "value" is a priority it tends to lead to conservative behavior. And I think a wave of that thinking is taking over in a lot of front offices. I think the term "sustainable" is indicative of this mindset. I dont disagree the Pohlads keep the purse strings tight, but part of the appeal in hiring this FO (and retaining Ryan for so long) was that they agreed not to open the vaults as a strategy. They dont believe in it either, which is agreeable to ownership.
  4. I think most of us agree it starts and stops with ownership. They seem to employ people in the FO who are conservative spending money and, at the end of the day, money talks in free agency.
  5. Theres that too. You are arming overworked, underpaid people who work in a high stress environment. Plenty could go wrong from the inside.
  6. It's hard not to look at his profile and see things to like and things to not like. But he's advancing well and young for his level, so I think this is about right. He's not particularly valuable right now though, so I hope they don't deal him right now unless he is over-valued by their trade partner.
  7. From my perspective, the difference in a kid's life between involved parents and not involved is enormous. And involvement can look a lot of different ways. There is no one right way to discipline or care, just as long as you have a consistent system for both. Let your kids know you love them. Let them know how to show kindness and empathy. Let them know what it's like to fail and to succeed. Let them know how to make choices themselves. To have self-respect, but respect for others. There's many more, but there is no one right way. Unfortunately, far too many children do not have any of these things in their life but in the classrooms myself and many other badly underappreciated men and women provide for them.
  8. Three things I've thought listening to all the back and forth talk: 1) Prayer in schools has come up. Pray all you want in school, I just won't be leading it and no teacher should be asked to at a public school. And if the implication is kids not praying means god ignores this violence....well, your god is a real piece of work. 2) Arming teachers. Most teachers are women. Many of those women are older or petite or both. Many men that work in the profession are also smaller and less physically able than some of their students. Some teachers are just not attentive enough. Giving teachers a gun is inviting some student to turn a classroom into a shooting gallery over their anger or misbehavior. The sheer number of things that could go wrong are ridiculous in scope. I can't believe it is seriously being suggested. 3) We've heard about the breakdown in parenting. Yeah, that's real, but it knows no specific ideology, race, political affiliation, or geographic location. Many of these deranged youths are being raised by the very same right wingers that are decrying the breakdown of society. Or they are the parents of the parents that are causing it. The hypocrisy is thick.
  9. It doesn't shock me. You're a fair person in how you respond to this team, I genuinely appreciate your posts because you're among a the group here that you can't predict what they're going to type before they type it. I come here for interesting takes, the cookie cutter responses aren't interesting. The Strib comments are full of those, I come here for interesting takes. (If anything, your previous posting endeavor was more shocking) The current talent of the rotation makes me think a .500ish team, which puts you in the conversation for a WC spot. Which would then mean the real question could be their aggressiveness at the deadline. But I think adding a guy like Cobb or Lynn could put them solidly in WC and divisional contention. In lieu of getting a #2, I'll settle for having a bevy of 3/4 types. This offense is good enough to make that workable. And in lieu of Cobb or Lynn? Well then go get a DH and just put your foot down on the offensive side of the game. Either way, this current roster is too middling for my liking. And that looks like a wasted opportunity.
  10. Absolutely we needed this, but without the other level of arm the rotation is still a major weakness. I'm not even asking for an ace, just a more natural 2/3. This deal is great, but more is still needed.
  11. That's a good question. I complain about some of our decision making, but I'd stop caring about baseball before I'd want to be a fan of either Florida team.
  12. HRs are a little worrisome but otherwise he profiles as a fine midrotation guy. But I hope they arent done. This is a nice palate cleanser though.
  13. The hell did they DFA Dickerson for? I would prefer a righty, but looks like a fine DH to me.
  14. "Overconfident" might just be the positive spin to my "naive". Im not sure its saying anything different. And i might be more inclined to that conclusion had Molitor and ownership not echoed it. That, to me, indicates something more.
  15. You are right, this analogy works very well. We are used to the under-delivering, but the over-promising was a new development. I genuinely want to know why they seemed ready to give that impression, without the subsequent action to back it up.
  16. Rather than comp this to a manager, I think a politician is a better comparison. Campaign promises are sometimes made deliberately to mislead. Sometimes the person is unrealistic/naive about what they can do once they get in office. Sometimes, they just say stuff with no discernible idea of what they are talking about. I won't claim to know which one of those better characterizes our FO and their "priority" talk, but I would suggest that none of those outcomes are particularly favorable. Only the middle one could be said to have the chance, but it requires them to have put forth an honest, determined effort. It's hard to see 5/110 as meeting that criteria either. I'm not sure how to spin those comments in a positive way and I'm confused why anyone would take issue with fans being upset with the gap between promises and results. Just like in politics, we (try) to hold people accountable.
  17. If you think they were unrealistic than you are concluding they were naive. I left that open as an option. I don't know what their thinking was at the time(s) they made those statements, I just know their actions have fallen woefully short of their rhetoric and I have no problem holding them to that. Just like I would hold anyone in management to account if they walked into a meeting, promised a bunch of things, and then failed to deliver on them. Yes, you'll fail expectations, but when you deliberately and clearly set those expectations yourself, you need to own some (most) of the blame.
  18. If Rooker is ready after this year....give him the job. I appreciate Joe and think he's gotten a largely unfriendly reception to his production, but he's no longer providing enough from his position to justify continuing the relationship.
  19. All any of us were doing were holding them to what they said. The FO and even the ownership committed several times publicly to a path of action. And we've seen nothing that backs it up. So either those statements were dishonest, naive, or inadvisedly stupid. I haven't determined which, but a few more signings like Anibal Sanchez and I might have an answer for you.
  20. Didn't waste any time selling us on the ol' veteran leadership either huh?
  21. If Sanchez won't take a ST invite or minor league deal....move on. There is simply no reason to attach anything else to any offer for him.
  22. Hard to be optimistic when I'm told I shouldn't take them at their word and their actions give me no reason to be.
  23. Why not just give him an invite to camp then? Everything about this smells like they plan to actually have him in the rotation. There is nothing about that anyone should be happy about.
