  1. Remember that thing I said earlier today about Sano/Hrbek?
  2. True, it'd be nice if we built from both ends and met in the middle.
  3. I disagree, you have credible speculation. You have plausible hopes. Not evidence. Plus, I'm not sure the argument "he made 20 starts and was so exhausted he stunk terribly" is a compelling argument. And, again, this is not crowning Santana or crapping on May and Romero. Just taking that hyperbole about "likeliness" back to reality.
  4. "Bridge" is a good word.
  5. I was speaking more to the protest angle of things and the need to wake people up to issues by making them feel uncomfortable. I recognize and acknowledge that necessity. But there are still limits to that if you want to accomplish your goals. On the discussion part, I think the key distinction Brock is that you have to go into these discussions knowing you'll make people feel uncomfortable. It is unavoidable that you'll reach that point. The subject matter itself, the mere mention of it (as you said), is enough to do that. But what should make them feel uncomfortable is the reality/facts/concerns of which you're speaking about. Going beyond that to make them feel uncomfortable purposefully with your tone, accusations, or insinuations is where you venture down the wrong path IMO. At that point you're not discussing, you're giving a sermon. And I gave up on hearing those awhile ago for precisely that reason.
  6. They're going to get killed. But hopefully the scrounge up a few wins in the series. That's, I think, all we can really hope for.
  7. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't make people feel uncomfortable. I'm just suggesting that on the other end of that, at some point you can do more harm than good. And, in my opinion, that's plainly true. As an example (one I don't mean to derail with_ - Teacher strikes are happening all over and they are designed to cause discomfort. That's fine, I support that. But I'd guess that if teachers decided to make parents uncomfortable by holding their children hostage that it likely wouldn't help the cause. Now unlike my extreme example, determining where you cross the line from what's necessary to cause discomfort and where it is counter-productive probably isn't an easy one to determine. (And only then, it might be via hindsight) Nevertheless, it does exist and it can derail your movement even in the eyes of reasonable people if you're not aware of that. At the end of the day you want to cause enough discomfort to spur change of the kind you aim for. That's a difficult, delicate balance and because of that, I think it is possible to push too hard or in the wrong way and ultimately do more harm than good.
  8. Would you agree that there comes a point where your efforts to make someone uncomfortable become counter-productive to your effort?
  9. Yup and Rosario isn't even the best example on this team. The Sano/Hrbek comparison should be clear as hell. That's the one that should be the focal point. Eddie has a knack for boneheaded plays, but the Sano criticisms are of the far more personal type. Good points Brock on the value of talking about systems. It still invites the problematic "privilege" talk but not the same way.
  10. Absolutely, injuries are wildcards that shake your confidence. Im making no grand predictions about Santana, more asserting just how grand a prediction it is to think May or Romero are going to jump from their last season to what was stated in this thread.
  11. I freaking LOVE the way Kepler reacted after those homeruns.
  12. That can all be true and it can still be silly to think it is "likely" he'll be worse than a guy who hasn't started in two years (or pitched at all in a year) and a rookie who had a 4+ ERA in AA last year are going to rise up and be better than him.
  13. I never liked his solutions, but he always seemed reasonable to me. But the complicity with Trump is a huge issue that should forever mar his legacy. That said, I'm not sure we're better off without him unless a Democrat wins his seat. "Reasonable" and "House Republican" don't go together very often in 2018 America.
  14. His is well said as well. We have to find ways to challenge without offending and to be challenged without being offended. There has been too much injected into this thread, in my opinion, that struggles with one end of that or the other.
  15. Ryan never struck me as a diabolical Republican. Maybe he's just tired of being stuck in the middle of a *#^storm that he always ends up being blamed for. Also, it wouldn't shock me if his seat was won and held by a Democrat. It's been awhile that the Republicans controlled it, but that area of Wisconsin has continued to get more urban and less rural over Ryan's time in office.
  16. The last time Trevor May started a baseball game Barack Obama was President. Fernando Romero has pitched one game above AA and last year, at AA, posted a 4.25 ERA with a WHIP of 1.35. I don't care what your definition of likely is, they aren't "likely" to outpitch a guy that has posted an ERA+ over 100 all three years with the Twins. Is it impossible? Of course not. But likely is just nonsense.
  17. I'm not necessarily endorsing this, but I found it interesting and relevant to the discussion. (More the second half of the article) I think it has value to consider, even if there are times where perhaps you set it aside.
  18. It seems to me that the man never met a lie he didn't mind telling.
  19. I think it says a lot about what evidence is out there at Mueller's disposal that they got a judge to agree that Cohen and Trump are so unlikely to cooperate that search warrants are required. I've long believed we're more likely to vote him out after one term than we ever are to impeach him. I hold more hope that these investigations put him in jail later and humiliate him.
  20. I have a hard time calling May or Romero "likely" to be better than Santana. I mean, you can believe that if you want, but you do so in the face of things like facts and evidence.
  21. Worried for the whole year? Not yet. Worried he's going to be available for far less of the season than previously indicated? Yes.
  22. Jets are definitely deeper and more physical. It was my least favorite matchup for the Wild to draw. That is a ridiculously good team.
  23. Well, most storylines are manufactured, including your examples. We could just boil it down to "whoever scores more goals than the other team" if we want to avoid that. Hellebuyck has never done this before, he's in uncharted waters. Dubnyk has gone pumpkin on us a few times in the playoffs. It wouldn't shock me at all if both were sub-par this year.
  24. I think the Jets win, but really it comes down to the goaltending. And I think both teams enter the series unsure about what they're going to get.
