  1. If the Twins aren't going to be any good, and they aren't, Mauer should be catching about 60-65% of the time. His catching doesn't really help when you only have a couple of major league hitters in the lineup.
  2. Good ol' JR. "Never been ordered to reduce payroll" goes right next to "never been told no when I went to Carl to ask for more money." Ryan was hired because they didn't have to order him to reduce payroll. He's a company man who knows what ownership wants.
  3. They are going to need a lot of luck from the BABIP gods to be anything but putrid.
  4. I'd be surprised to find we banned that many non-pornbots. If you banned 3-4, I would assume we didn't ban many more than that.
  5. Lohse's "worth" is kind of irrelevant, since he was expected to sign for his own worth, less the value of a high pick in order to keep the Yankees from signing the top players away (which totally worked, the Yankees haven't signed any big free agents, ever).
  6. Good Bullpen = Gardy is good at managing bullpens. Bad Bullpen = Bad pitchers. 90 Wins = Gardy is a great manager. 90 Losses = Not his fault.
  7. Never understood the bitching about letting Baker leave...keeping him was certainly an alternative, but not a great one. The fact that they exclusively pursued other undesirable options isn't a reason to add emphasis to what would have been a highly questionable move at the time.
  8. Both have a very urban playing style.
  9. What could you possibly be basing that on.
  10. What were his options? He didn't accept a lesser role out of the goodness of his heart, he did it because no one would give him a better job.
  11. I find it interesting that someone would take what someone told a sportswriter as an indication of their attitude.
  12. Let's hear it.
  13. No. Even in this pointless argument, runs and runs against are the only two important stats. I haven't seen too many teams trying to let the other team tie a game up so they can get some more outs.
  14. You're basing that on what, exactly?
  15. He had one lucky season in high A ball, that's what happened to him. Brignac isn't really that bad, especially compared to the dregs the Twins will give at bats to, but let's forget the "Top 100 Prospect" BS. His 2010 season might be a realistic goal, and that would crush what the Twins should expect to get from 3/4 of their infielders this season.
  16. Most of the white males would be screwed too.
  17. They could, but the Twins' health insurance plan doesn't cover diseases.
  18. Obviously. The Twins would never use the google to bring in someone. You can't feel someone's handshake or look them in the eye online.
  19. The goal line in the NFL is a game of rock, paper, scissors.
  20. It is really interesting that Bryant McKinnie became the key to a team winning the Super Bowl. He and Oher handled the Bronco & 49er pass rushes extraordinarily well and gave the Ravens a way to win.
  21. I don't know what that means. In a sport where everything is based on the frequency of success, every single player in the league has "moments" where they look capable of being in the hall of fame.
  22. I didn't say that this catcher would be able "to hit," as you've interpreted it. Drew Butera does not meet the very lowest standards of a major league player. On the scale of major league hitters, he is not on the scale. He is not a "no hit catcher." He is significantly worse than a player who would earn that distinction. Drew Butera's bat does not approach the level at which a player should be considered for a spot on a major league roster.
  23. A reliever who can keep his WHIP around 1.2 isn't a minor leaguer.
  24. There is no reason for Butera to make the team. The Twins are not restricted in any way to choosing between Ryan Doumit and Drew Butera. If Ryan Doumit is, indeed, such a liability as a catcher that he should not be allowed to play that position, the Twins should identify or acquire a different player who is acceptable defensively as a catcher, and also possesses enough ability as a hitter to produce at a level that, while poor, is above a reasonable minimum threshold.
