  1. The Twins need to lock up Butera and Revere for the next decade.
  2. Butera embodies everything that is wrong with this franchise. I will have to rethink my plans to buy tickets for this season.
  3. Every pitcher in baseball has a good outing or two on occasion. It is the nature of the game. Drew Butera had a .732 ops in May last year. Even with his sporadic "brilliance," his numbers prove he is a very bad pitcher.
  4. I can just imagine being a Pohlad when Terry Ryan is updating me on his plan to improve the team, and this is his best idea. "How much am I paying you?"
  5. It wouldn't matter without a national TV deal, which doesn't make sense in the context of the sport. The Yankees can "sign" a TV deal for relatively nothing, they already are well below market price.
  6. Money doesn't buy championships. Just look how many the Yankees have won lately. I know, they have only won 5 of the last 16, not even 1/3!
  7. I could post this question on a lot of these threads, but here goes: How does acquiring people who are bad a playing baseball make the Twins better at playing baseball?
  8. Agreed for the most part. Do you think the line has been worthy of him being skiddish this year? I've thought many sacks were his fault for holding the ball too long or running into defenders rather than staying in the pocket. I've never found a site I like for tracking o-line work, just rely on my eyes which isn't always fair. I think a few inexcusably missed assignments, which we've seen too much of, have more of an impact on a quarterback's trust than guys getting beat one-on-one, where they've probably been mediocre rather than poor. Good teams don't have defenders shooting through holes 1-4 untouched when they aren't overloaded. The Vikings have had that, and a handful goes a long way.
  9. Swisher can be looking for whatever he wants.
  10. Ponder clearly grew to distrust his offensive line, which, while logically understandable, is not something a quarterback can do. You have to drop back assuming that you will be protected, even if you probably won't be, and adjust when the pressure comes. Those few games where he was hit multiple times before finishing his drop or play fakes clearly rattled him and led to that lack of trust. Hopefully he has learned that lesson.
  11. Hunter was better than Young in 2012, I don't think that's anywhere near a certainty in 2013. Hunter is old and had an extremely lucky season. You're also looking at this the wrong way, the opportunity cost of this move is what will really hurt the Tigers. What else could they have gotten for $13,000,000 over the next two years? Can you get, for example, Nick Swisher (a significantly better bet to help your team) for that?
  12. Hunter had an .817 OPS last year with a .389 BABIP. Gross.
  13. Dayton should shut his pie hole. He already approved this. The stadium is not in jeopardy, it's "man of the people" bluster.
  14. All this over a guy coming back from two major elbow ligament repairs?
  15. ...has good taste in men. http://www.seattlepi.com/sports/article/Former-Huskies-star-Jerramy-Stevens-in-court-for-4033619.php http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2004147460_rbstevens270.html
  16. Didn't the Twins just trade for a no hit shortstop a few months ago?
  17. In what way is Delmon Young an improvement on the offensive end?
  18. I think that's what you meant to say.
  19. Metrodome payroll changed to Target Field Payroll. This has nothing to do with payroll. The Twins had in house options superior to all of those players. Maybe... But the Twins musta felt differently about the in house options at the time. And the 4 players you mention were attempts at bargain value during a time when the Twins were quite serious about bargain shopping. You and I have a very different definition of the word "bargain."
  20. Metrodome payroll changed to Target Field Payroll. This has nothing to do with payroll. The Twins had in house options superior to all of those players.
  21. Actually, if I recall correctly, many proponents of "advanced metrics" were giddy over the Adam Everett acquisition. Yeah, everyone was ecstatic about that .599 OPS from a guy who played in Houston. Even the clear minority that defended the signing because of defensive "statistics" will concede that his complete inability to hit was a given. The fact that he couldn't throw from short to first doesn't exactly take the Twins' front office off the hook.
  22. Still a weak comparison. The Pirates and Royals were completely inept orgs that were terrible at drafting and player development. In addition to that they were consistently going cheap in the draft and not taking the best players. Additionally they never had money available to spend on FA's when they started putting together a young core of players. The Pirates and Royals finally understood how to build a farm system and there is finally hope for their franchises. The Twins have shown that they will spend in the draft and internationally. they also have a lot of money to spend once they start putting a decent team together. In the meantime they don't even need to go really cheap in FA. they just need to avoid big mistakes like the Wilsons, Lowes, Burnetts, Lackeys, etc... So, the Twins are a smart organization who know how to build a farm system (despite the awful production from their farm system in recent years), but they're destined to be the Cubs or Mets if they spend money on the major league club? Brilliant.
  23. "When the team acquired players such as Tony Batista, Ramon Ortiz, Adam Everett, and Craig Monroe, it was straightforward for most people familiar with the most basic modern statistics to predict that they were very unlikely to help the team win baseball games. What changes have been made to the front office to ensure personnel mistakes that could have been so easily avoided will not occur in the future?"
  24. The Cubs and Mets have been spending 140M/yr to be terrible for years and they have terrible farm systems. they finally have made the decision to cut payroll, ditch their expensive veterans and build thru their farm system. Kind of what the Twins are currently doing. ...and what the Pirates and Royals have been doing for twenty years.
  25. I'm all for signing FA's. The problem is that there is a limited supply each season and that's why you have to overpay. That's fine if you think a player will at least be decent for most of the contract. It's a problem if you have to go to 5 years and it's likely that the player will have declined a lot. For example do you think the two good starters from last offseason (Beuhrle and Wilson) will still be average pitchers at the end of their contracts? Many people have thought that Blackburn's 5M is a burden. How much more of a burden is a 15M bad contract? What if you have 2-3 bad contracts like that because you have gone nuts in FA with the wrong players? Perhaps you look like the Mets and Cubs. That would be terrible to be as bad as the Mets and Cubs!
