  1. Or had a real pitching coach... Do not underestimate Neil Allen vs. Rick Anderson when talking about improvement of Twins' pitchers, including May (or Pelfrey)
  2. History kinda repeats itself. 1958 Senators. Eddie Yost was the All Star third basement and then a kid by the name of Killebrew came along. Plouffe is not quite as good as Yost was, and Sano could be better than Killebrew (already is with the glove...) The Senators never worried about Yost (FWIW, was traded the next season in 1959) when Killebrew moved up. Plouffe can replace Hunter at RF, if needs to be so and call it a day. The Twins will not worry about Plouffe when Sano's time comes (and it better be sooner than later, if this team is still competing this season.) I think that it is telling that the Twins extended Dozier and not Plouffe who actually has a very similar production. As far as the original post goes, yes, Plouffe is driving runs better this season. And I am not talking about ribies (which is a worthless metric anyways.) I really like Fangraphs' "Clutch" metric, which measures how much better (or worse) a hitter does in high leverage situations, vs. content neutral situations. This is the first year that Plouffe has a positive number. Same for Win Probability Added (which is another way of looking at that question, better than RBI, but not quite as good as Clutch...)
  3. Realistic? Depends on whether the Twins will (gulp) keep contending this season, depends on the performance of the other outfielders, his performance the rest of the season and injuries. I got to think that Hicks is next in line as he is out of options next season and leads all the Twins' OFs in any level with a .318/.396/.545 slash. It is boarderline ridiculous that he is not with the Twins at this point. Don't forget that Arcia will have a spot and Hunter will have another (realistically, pending injuries or trades.) I just cannot see it happening in 2015. Would I mind it if they jettison or bench Hunter for a Hicks-Buxton-Arcia OF? Nope. But realistically it's not happening...
  4. Good for Rosario. This time last season he was in the organizational doghouse because of his own doing. Very important and really happy to see way better roster management with Molitor & Co over Gardy & Co. No day-to-days that linger for weeks and cripple the team. No way that Gardenhire would have used the DL so often this season. Great to see that Molitor does.
  5. Interesting to see Shibuya's travel through the organization as a mid-low lever starting prospect plagued with arm problems to his more than decent transition to a pen role. Watched him pitch a few times this spring and he does have a rubber arm. Could be a very useful piece out of the pen, but he will never be a star. That said, gee. If 2 out of 3 outs you record are strikeouts, at least you should be Seth's minor league pitcher of the month, if not having your ticket to Minnesota punched over people like Tonkin and Pressly... Shame. Oliveros should had been it...
  6. Dont' disagree, but Santana has been worse than Vargas on both parts of the game. At least Vargas can take a walk every now and then, and cannot hurt the team by booting balls like Santana. As far as Pinto goes, I'd rather see him catch and the old DH they play at RF, DH.
  7. I had to look twice to see whether he was rehabbing there or something
  8. 6.26: Tommy Milone's FIP. Worse. Than. Tim. Stauffer's. (and Nolasco's, of course.) And a Fastball that can be wind-aided Easy decision. No Rocks, no hard places. The real decision here is who should be keeping Duensing's place warm while on the DL, Milone or Thielbar. That's about it...
  9. The Angels might be a good fit, based on who their backup catcher is I think that Gardenhire needs a low expectations & low accountability team like the Twins. From that list that would leave out the Angels (owner & fans), Marlins (owner), Phillies (owner & fans.) Maybe the Brewers are a good fit. Maybe. The've been keeping Roenicke around for ever and a few days. But the El Paso Diablos or the Round Rock Express, are probably a better fit. Or a third base coach position, since that was his role in the last post-season winning team he was a member.
  10. Would love to have Gardy (n Andy) in the division again. Um. He would not survive half a season in Philly. Kidding you not.
  11. Good stuff. One nit pick: Duensing never been on the DL in the minors as well (or missed time in College, after he returned from TJ surgery.) So he has never been on the DL before in his 10 year pro career.
  12. Yeah. But they are both very raw. IIRC Poulson walked twice as many as he struck out as a 24-year old in E-town last season. Ricky.Vaughn.
  13. Interesting stuff (but I did not read anything about advanced statistics ) At that level, some college players are still making the transition to wood, and everyone in general is pretty raw, positions are not determined yet, and they learn how to play the game in general. Fundamentals and teaching situational hitting, pitching and fielding is much more important. They got to develop that base before you go into more advanced. And about 1/2 of the kids in the Midwest League will not make it to AA and about 4/5 will not make it to the majors.
  14. There is a broomball team in the Twin Cities now? Guess some people are happy.
  15. Still way way way too early to hit the panic button. But when it is hit, it should not be something like replacing Robinson with Hicks and Boyer with Tonkin, because it will be totally ineffective, might add to a plus 2 in the W column or so. It should be gutting the front office and replacing it with people who have a vision and have experience in building a winning team and are not horders. Because this team is so bad, that it will require trading people like Arcia and Plouffe and Suzuki and Hughes and Perkins (and I am naming tradable names only) and cutting some of the untradables to do it. Gut and rebuild. And should start from the top. And if takes renaming a Bloody Mary, Bloody Terry, I am all good for it...
  16. Are you including Sano in this? If so, he has .971 OPS. They are pitching him like Bonds so far.
  17. This is an interesting fallacy and I have seen it coming here and there, but it is hard to figure out its root. The only seasons that Polanco played more at 2B than at SS were in 2012 and 2013, because the Twins thought that Goodrum should take more reps there, a notion that they realized should be reversed in 2014. I kinda believe that this misconception comes from another player's agent or something of that sort. Or as an excuse to have their second round pick there ahead of a player with a better glove... Heck, look who BA (Manuel) thought was the Twins' best defensive infielder before the 2011 season?
  18. I'd say that Sano and Buxton have one elite tool each (Power, Speed) as well I think that Polanco's hit (average) tool is ahead of both at this point. As far as being "elite", I think that he will be a .300 hitter, which is "elite" for a shortstop. So these guys are not that far from each other (and, I have Polanco ranked ahead of Buxton) The one guy in that team that will surprise people is Mike Gonzales. I think that, based what I saw this ST, he's finally figured it out (and it was about time.) Dark horse for making the Twins in 2016.
  19. Facts: a. The Twins had a better cumulative record under Bill Smith than they did under Terry Ryan (So I suspect that if "the legacy of Bill Smith is never going to be thought of in a positive manner", Ryan's should be thought of in less positive manner. Wins and Losses do not lie, no matter how many excuses one can throw out there...) b. Unlike his predecessor (and successor) the Twins under Bill Smith did trade prospects for established players to help them contend c. (and this is a biggy) Smith wrote huge checks to International Free Agents for the first time in the Twins' iteration of the franchise. (and the checks got smaller after he left.) No Smith = no Sano, Polanco, Kepler etc...
  20. That's exactly the issue. And if the majority of the players who are saying that the cheaters are cheating them, they should have the ability of a club to void a cheater's contract as part of the next CBA. But we shall see...
  21. Testosterone analogs, like Stanozolol, are the definition of anabolic steroids (aka 'roids)
  22. There were a couple named in the Mitchell Report: Dan Naulty, and the current Chattanooga Lookouts Hitting Coach
  23. Apples with Pineapples. Vargas tested positive for what the Williamses did, Phentermine, which is in weight control "supplements" that are legitimately sold OTC in this country. He did not test positive for synthetic testosterone that has doping as its only use.
