  1. That's the interesting balance with the minor leagues, as far as affiliate ball goes and it generates a lot of conflict. Minor league affiliates want to win, so more butts on the seats and hot dogs eaten. Major league clubs want to use minor leagues as development leagues, but will not secure affiliates, unless there is some winning going on. So every year they try to sign a bunch of AAAA players or older former major leaguers who have no hope of making to the majors and will not develop any further, but will help the minor league affiliates win, so the natives will be pleased a bit. Clubs like the Braves, Cardinals, and Yankees, decided to make their minor league systems player development systems, so they own all of their minor league teams (like the Twins own their Elizabethton team), so they do not have to please any natives as far as big picture club development strategy goes. I think that more teams will follow that model sooner than later.
  2. Both Rondons actually. The Twins need strikeout pitchers. Not that they should be the closer or anything. I am talking about replacing Tonkin & Co here...
  3. Another way of looking at it. All Stars. Only 7 position players who Ryan (&Co) drafted made it to the All Star game (and only 2 of them Mauer and Morneau more than 1 times.) . That is about 20 position players who are All Stars per year, and a lot of years... How about MVPs? 2 Silver Sluggers? No matter where you draw the line, it is below what the average should have been.
  4. Again: Who are the Hall of Fame caliber hitters that he drafted? Stahoviak? Not that MacPhail did much better, but we know who his scouting director was...
  5. See above. I am talking about Hall of Famers. Do you want to wait until their eligibility is over to say that nobody who Ryan (& Co) drafted from 1994 to 2011 (with the potential but unlikely exception) of Mauer is a Hall of Famer? About 2-3 people who are drafted per year make it to the Hall of Fame. That's the ratio.
  6. They don't have to be inducted to the Hall of Fame to be included. For example, it is pretty safe to say that none of Ryan & Co's picks from 1994 to 2011 will make it to the Hall of Fame, with the potential exception of maybe Mauer and that is very unlikely. For picks drafter from 2012-2016 we will know in 2-3 years or so. How about rings? World Series appearances? Better way to judge a GM and FO? Because the result is the same as far as Ryan goes.
  7. For 23 years, sure it can be. In those 23 years about 50-60 players went to the Hall of Fame. Zero were drafted by Ryan & Co, where the norm would be 2-3 should have been, if his drafts were "average" and about double that, if they were "good". Just math.
  8. Fangraphs: Which team can keep Otani the healthiest (and thus presumably would be the best destination for him?) Guess their conclusion
  9. Really? Ryan was the GM since 1994. That's 23 years ago. And he had plenty of high picks. How many HOF hitters were drafted under him? Maybe one, and he will should not make it.
  10. Not that reasonable for Darvish's age 32-36 seasons. Age matters. And that is pretty much exactly the contract that Sabathia got in the same age, and it was one of the worst contracts out there. 3/$50M and a couple of options at $20M a piece is what I would think as "reasonable", as far as Darvish goes. But I think of him as a number 2 in a contender, not as an ace. The Twins have to extend some of the core pretty soon and they will need cash for that...
  11. Define "reasonable". That is Mauer $$$
  12. Quade is not gone. He will be back in the role of roving outfield instructor. I think that Phil Roof retired as well (he is 76) That Mauer thing is really surprising. Looks like he might end up out of the organization, the way it is written. It seems that he has an offer to do something that he might not be too font of doing.
  13. It is a team option that the Twins can pick up for $14M or buy it out for $1M. If he pitches 200+ innings, it will automatically vest and cannot be bought out. The Twins are in for $1M for 2019 as is, and they can pick it up for $14M even if he is on the DL the whole season (not that I wish him that.)
  14. They have a team option that vests with 200 IP in 2018 for $14M. Extending him is unnecessary, unless they want to pay $11M for his age 36 season
  15. Not quite close: Santana 2017: 3.28 ERA, 4.46 FIP, 2.9 fWAR, 19.3 K%, 12.3 K/BB, 1.13 WHIP/ .245 BABIP, 10.1 SwStr% FranKKKKie 2010: 3.62 ERA, 2.66 FIP, 5.7 fWAR, 24.9 K%, 17.7K/BB, 1.26 WHIP/ .331 BABIP, 12.5 SwStr% That said, I totally agree with the rest: Santana needs to go. That ERA-FIP difference, the facts that he was not consistent but had an extremely unreliable June (6.03 ERA) and July (4.68 ERA), he is half a ligament away from disaster, and very likely his 2019 option will vest with IP in 2018, makes it a must to get him traded. Plus he chocked when it really mattered in the postseason. Package him with Dozier and see what you get.
  16. Re: the Puckett clause: Check out the Tony Oliva Clause, the Doc Gooden Clause, the Fernando Valenzuela Clause, the Mike Scott Clause and the Ron Guidry Clause as well. If those guys are not in the Hall, Johan does not belong either.
  17. Do tell: How much better. Name names
  18. There are plenty of available options out there. One just has to be creative, esp. as far as trades are concerned.
  19. Kirilloff over all those guys? Really? esp. over Rooker or Badoo who are playing the same position, have 2 functioning elbows, can hit better, and are properly socialized...
  20. If that happens, then they might or might not make the post-season again. On the other hand, I heard a little birdie or two saying that SP is a high priority, so they better add a couple arms better than Santana who will be competing with Gibson & Mejia for the #4 position in the rotation.
  21. Ahem. Remember when Berrios was in AAA in 2016 and 2017?
  22. Wonderful to see a true rendition of the oft messed up Foundations' lyrics. Methinks the next stanza is more appropriate for the discussion in hand: And then worst of all (Worst of all) You never call, baby When you say you will (Say you will) But I love you still
  23. Well, I kinda happen to live in a semi Pirates fan base and the word here is $ relief. Also who of: Kepler, Kirilloff, Gordon, Gonsalves (2 of) Burdi, Bard, Reed, Melotakis is not a young player a team would not like to build on?
  24. This is the other thing that makes me skeptical about Otani wanting to come to MN: Expectations. Unless the Twins get another SP better than him, he will be their de facto ace, which might just be too much to handle his first season. In other teams, there are clear aces
