  1. I don't know, but I just tend to ignore this kind of drama, unless it negatively affects the Twins. Got enough things to worry about
  2. Good stuff. This is a really interesting thing that Steil said: Because it is dead wrong Last time I checked the Twins have handed out a contact almost twice that much (8 years, $184 million) a few seasons back. Really bizarre and uninformed statement to say the least...
  3. What makes you think a. that Houston is willing to trade a 23 year old catching prospect under team control for 6 seasons and b. that Stassi, who has a grand total of 8 PAs above AA, is a better option than Pinto right now. for reference: Pinto's numbers in 2013: AA (453 PA): .307/.406/.490, AAA (75 PA) : .314/.333/.486, MLB (83 PA) : .342/.398/.566 Pinto's numbers in 2012: A+ (393 PA): .295/.361/.473, AA (52 PA) : .298/.365/.553 Stassi's numbers in 2013: AA (TL, 323 PA) : .277/.333/.529, MLB (8 PA) : .286/.375/.286 Stassi's numbers in 2012: A+ (CAL, 360 PA) : .268/.331/.468 It is clear (to me) that Pinto a. is a better player right now (I cannot tell about the future) and b. he has been pretty consistent and put very similar numbers at every level he was the last 2 seasons, which makes me think that his September numbers in the MLB were not a fluke. Also, the Texas and California Leagues are much more hitter friendly than the FSL, EL and IL. Luis Sardinas is a 20 year old SS with 141 PA in AA (Texas League) as his highest level last season when he hit a robust .259/.286/.311. I cannot see any way that he is better suited for a starting SS this season than Eduardo Escobar who had a higher OPS than that in the majors and hit .307/.380/.500 in 188 PA in AAA (International League.) Even Danny Santana is more ready now ... As far as the OF goes, I think that Hicks will be fine for 2014 and moving to RF in 2015 with Buxton taking over CF. No need for people who will be blocking either of the 2 and Arcia.
  4. Here is a comparison of 2013 numbers: Plouffe: .701 OPS, 44 R, 14 HR, 52 RBI, 0.4 WAR, fDef -6.6 (522 PA) age 28 in 2014 Willingham: .709 OPS, 42 R, 14 HR, 48 RBI, 0.0 WAR, fDef -13.2 (477 PA) age 35 in 2014 a. who was the weaker spot of the two? b. based on age and shape, who is likely to be better in 2014? I think that some players do not get the credit they deserve whether others are getting free rides.
  5. I think that Polanco is a much better prospect than Santana because he is much better with the stick. He has really great pitch selectivity at the plate for a teenager. He does not have as much range as Santana but he is more sure-handed with the glove. Santana has been pretty much at the Florimon/Cristian Guzman mold, Polanco is more at the Jeter mold (if that makes sense; this does not mean that Santana will no be better than Florimon or Guzman or that Polanco will come any close to Jeter. Just indicating different types of players.) Goodrum is ok with the glove, but he looks like a corner OF/IF to me. Levi Michael might come out of nowhere and surprise. Who knows.
  6. Typo. sorry about that Candido PimenteL . He is still with the organization, correct?
  7. This is kind of interesting. Rewind a couple seasons ago. After the 2011 season. Replace "Plouffe" with "Valencia" and this sentence still stands. The Twins are notorious about doing this to their players who are not first round draft picks. I think that this is what might save Plouffe and Parmelee this season. And I do like Plouffe. I like him more than I ever liked Cuddyer. I think that Plouffe has great power and is a much better OF than most on the Twins' roster right now.
  8. The only other left hand relief options as good as Duensing are either the closer or in A ball. Thielbar's .175 BABIP and 89 mph fastball will get exposed next season if he is in the bigs. Albers, Diamond are soft tossers as well. Ibarra had an .167 BABIP in Rochester and .244 overall. Corey Williams regressed and he is at least a year away. Dean and Darnell are starters. Aaron Thompson is non-reliable. Who is as good a LHP in the organization right now as Duensing? I do not see anyone not named Perkins fit the bill... I just don't get the Duensing hate here...
  9. I hated the Revere trade, because I like him and he is one of those charismatic good energy guys. That said, if the Twins had Revere instead of Hicks starting at CF, how many more games would have won? 27 more games? Because that is what they needed to get to the post-season. So not much harm there...
  10. Swarzak $935K and $25K bonus if he starts 10 games. All 3 avoid arbitration now.
  11. Great stuff! I am really bullish on Gilbert. I think that he is about 2 years or so away from the majors. He is one of those sleeper guys that nobody talks about and when you see him pitch you wonder where he came from and where he was hiding... Ranked him 20th in my prospect list this season.
  12. That's the thing: I have no idea about the Rangers' prospects and I really don't care that much. I do know the Twins' prospects, I have seen them play and I am relaying my gut feelings versus those of the national publications...
  13. Rules Not regulations. Just rules. The MLB is not a regulatory body last time I checked (that would be the executive branch of the Federal & State government )
  14. I read that, on the other hand, I wonder how much sour grapes the comment was...
  15. This extension is akin to the Mauer one for the Twins and at a similar $ level and it does not include any old age years for the Dodgers. 25-32 age seasons. Slam dung for them methinks...
  16. Polanco will be a shortstop until something happens. I suspect that at Fort Myers you will see Polanco at SS and Pimenter at 2B with Goodrum moving around third, short and second. Harrison will likely do the third/first shuffle as well. Mejia will likely be the utility guy there. I would be really surprised if Santana is not the starting SS at Rochester and Michael the starting SS at New Britain with Beresford keeping the AAA 2B job warm for Rosario to take over the end of May. Those older guys are just filler at this point...
  17. There is no way that Buxton is coming up North. But there are 2 obvious names missing: - Alex Meyer - Miguel Sano those guys could come up North if things fall their way. Even Ryan said that Meyer could potentially win a spot. And these 2 guys will make the Twins a better team.
  18. Due Diligence for organization depth. Just with those 2 Cuban pitchers. Some teams attend pretty much all workouts, the Twins are one of those teams. That said, the Twins' system is pretty light as far as third basemen go (check Seth's organizational depth writeup) and he might be a guy who the Twins might want to have in Rochester or in New Britain. Might even be better than Brandon Waring or Bartlett
  19. No Caleb Joseph (Baysox) was the 2013 Eastern League Player of the Year Allan Dykstra (B-Mets) was the 2013 Eastern League MVP Alex Dickerson (Curve) was the 2013 Eastern League Rookie of the Year Santana (and Pinto) made the Eastern League All Star team, maybe that's what you are thinking of... It is not only "sabermetrics". It is even old school metrics: .719 OPS, 2 HR, 66 R (for a lead off guy), 45 RBI, 24 BB, 97 K, 30% CS rate and 32 errors do not a superstar make (I did not even talk about "sabermetrics" like WAR, wRC+, wOBA etc). At any league, at any age. And you have to be a superstar to crack the Twins' top 10. Definitely better players were left out. Plus his glove is really inconsistent. He is rangy but makes silly mistakes on easy plays. And he fails the eye test. I watched him play 3 times last season and was not exactly impressed. He has great speed. He can make ground ball contact and try to run them for hits, with occasional line drives. That's pretty much his game.
  20. These guys are not top prospect kind of guys. Misael Siverio is 24 and lefty and Odrisamer Despaigne is 28 and righty. Neither of them are that great and are not better than what the Twins already have in their system. I think they were doing due diligence, that's about it. Cannot see them giving them any bonus to play, since they can sign equivalent or better MiLB FA without a bonus.
  21. In a lot of lists Pinto (and Herrmann and Hicks and Arcia) has graduated and he is not regarded a prospect any more because of those 83 MLB PAs and because he will likely is the Twins starting C. IMO, if you played in the majors, you are done as a prospect. I do like the MLB.com list better and not willing to jump on the Thorpe (or Sulbaran or Jorge) bandwagons quite yet. Maybe after this season. Walker needs to get on base more. A college kid with a .310 and .319 OBP in the last 2 seasons is not a top 10 prospect. Add 115 K in 508 ABs to that low OBP and you might be getting the picture. If he increases his walk rate and gets his OBP closer to .350, then he might be on the radar. At this point he is not much better prospect than someone like DJ Hicks (who is better with the bat, but not with his glove)
  22. Santana starts at Rochester. I cannot see him at AA any more. The guys who can play at SS at Rochester are utility types (yes including Beresford)
  23. re: Michael Young: About ready to announce his retirement.
  24. Three - Caught a line drive HR to deep center in the dome off Chili Davis' bat (still hurts) in 1991 (American League Ball) - Got a pop foul in 1995 at New Britain, their first year of their Twins' affiliation when they were Hardware City at the old Beehive Field (Eastern League Ball) - Was tossed one (by Drew Butera of all people) while at the OF tables during Twins' BP at the Tampa ballpark last Spring Training (MLB Ball)
  25. - FIP and the relative are supposed to be ballpark neutral. xPE is normalized for BABIP, which, allegedly will be the one place that slap hits will show. - Not sure that the dome affects Ks and BBs - Those PE/xPE ranges are for modern era (2000+) pitchers. I have not yet adjusted it to the oldies. And, yes, Cy Young winners are not the best pitchers around. xPE/PE, like FIP/xFIP and SIERA, does not always translate to W-L and ERA, which are the things the voters are looking for. - fWAR (which is FIP and not ERA based) I bet is on Nolasco's favor, but WAR is good to look at cumulative performance and career comparisons (like in HOF situations). Rate measurements, like the above are better suited for performance evaluations/predictions.
