  1. I think that the question that needs to be asked is: Who will give the Twins a better possibility to win if the starting Centerfielder? To me Presley looks like a clone of the Thomases, Mastroiannis, Komatsus, Repkos, Pridies, Tyners et. al that Gardy and Terry for some reason like to have on the team so much, but in reality they are AAAA guys that should be used for PR and defense. Hicks can be special. In my mind there is no question who should start (or who will give the Twins the best probability of winning...) They already do not have a bat at SS, looks like they might opt for not having one at C, if they don't have one at CF, we might be looking at another long season, despite the rotation improvement...
  2. I think that ranking an active player in a list of retired players or comparing his career to that of retired players is a bit premature. Mackey's point had a lot to do with perceptions about being a leader and a clubhouse presence. Also, if you are the best player in a team that has won 2 World Series you will be perceived better than if you are the best player in a team that should have done it but was not good enough to do it (regardless whether it was Mauer's fault, and it was not.) You cannot forget '87 and '91... As far as the retired players' career rankings go, if you count Carew's seasons away from the Twins he has to be on top.

  4. With Buxton in the organization, discussion about who is a better CF Revere or Hicks is academic. Buxton will push Hicks to a corner OF position as soon as he is in the majors.
  5. Rhett Bollinger has a similar story out today (here) with more realistic expectations from Willingham saying: Another year or so is much different than 3 years I wonder who got the wrong quote from Willingham here A couple of points from the discussion on Hicks and Arcia: re: Arcia: Corey Koskie was awful at third base, probably worse than Arcia is at the OF. And he cracked the bigs at age 25 and after lots of work was alright by year 2 to 3 in the majors. So there is hope for Arcia re: Hicks: In his age 23 season he had OPS+ of 65. Carlos Gomez had exactly the same OPS+ in his age 23 season and Torii Hunter had 73 in his age 23 season. They both turned out alright. And Hicks' .794 career minor league OPS is higher than both Gomez' (.735) and Hunter's (.751 and aided by a 2 season PCL 1.013 OPS). So, he might do better than these guys...
  6. If that is the goal, I would say the 3rd week of February. Minor leaguers who are neither on the 40-man nor invited to the big league camp report usually a week after the major leaguers. Lots of them will be around earlier, but the closer to reporting days the best chances you have to see them all...
  7. C Pinto 1B Mauer 2B Dozier SS Escobar 3B Plouffe LF Willingham/Presley CF Hicks RF Arcia/Presley DH Willingham/Kubel Bench: Presley Parmelee Suzuki Rotation: 1. Nolasco 2. Hughes 3. Pelfrey 4. Worley 5. Correia pen: Perkins Burton Duensing Swarzak Fien Tonkin Thielbar Kris Johnson DL: Florimon, Deduno Diamond bye bye When Florimon & Deduno return from the DL, two relievers with options (one lefty) will go to Rochester

  9. All will get claimed, unless Denuno's shoulder is shot, and he might not, if they DFA him. As far as Worley goes, he will be the fastest to get claimed out there. Simple question to ask: If Kyle Gibson were in this position, would he get claimed if DFA'd? Worley is the same age as Gibson (25) and he has had more success in the majors than Gibson already. Worley had elbow surgery September of 2012 to remove bone fragments and spurs and took until November to start conditioning. Thus he showed up out of shape and that messed his mechanics and got ugly (because his FB flattened) and resulted to injury. He showed up in shape this Spring Training and word is that he has his FB movement back. That would be great news
  10. Are you sure that Darnell will be in Rochester? Assuming that Deduno, Diamond and Worley either make the Twins, there are six pitchers (in bold above) who will likely make the Rochester rotation before Darnell and another one of them needs to make the New Britain rotation. Also, how many LHP will the Rochester rotation have?
  11. If he retires after his age 35 season, I would not mind if he finishes his career with the Twins Who would you not have on the team in the next 1-3 years for Willingham to still be around? Arcia, Buxton, Hicks, Kepler, Vargas, Walker, Harrison, Plouffe, Parmelee? I'd rather see any of those guys in the DH or OF (especially) spots than a 36, 37 or 38 year old Willingham.
  12. On the birth of his first child too (Daughter) Elodie Casey Florimon. She was born in the Twins Cities February 1st
  13. Old and tired cliche's aside, Nolasco is an excellent pitcher with flashes of Ace-type performance here and there and is very durable. The 2 younger guys (Hughes and Pelfrey) have much upside (rewind after the 2007 season: those are the guys the Twins wanted to get for Santana, did not get and now have them in their primes). Correia has been adequate and if he pitches 180+ innings again as the number four starter, it would be great. And the fifth starter could be Worley/Deduno/Gibson/Diamond/Meyer/May who all have had either success in various degrees in the majors or were top prospects, and this does not look like a bad rotation at all... Beats the Sydney Ponson/Ramon Ortiz Ryan signings of the past...
  14. My comment was entirely on the prospect side. At the time of the draft, the Twins had 4 OFs as top 10 prospects and a young rookie OF. The only top 10 SP prospect was Gibson, and that is why I wanted them to go after pitching. Fast forward a season, and with the trades (and the 2013 draft) now the Twins have a better balance of top prospect (or young MLB) talent between OF and SP. In that respect (which was the point I wanted to make) it worked alright...
  15. The biggest pro is low risk. Kubel will have to fight for the DH/OF position to make the team. If he does not perform, he does not make the team. If he performs he does. Parmelee is out of options so at this point he might have the upper hand. I see Kubel (and/or Parmelee) as the replacements for Doumit who hit .247/.314/.396 last season. Kubel's worst full season as a Twin was his .249/.323/.427 2010 season. That is better than Doumit, so there is improvement. If he does not show anything, he goes to Rochester or is cut. Not a big deal. And, unlike Raley, he does not even occupy a 40-man roster spot.
  16. You will be there too early for "official" minor league games against other teams. Those usually start mid March. Regardless, if you get to the ballpark a couple of hours early and go to the minor league fields you will catch scrimmages (like AA vs AAA) and lots of practice, like TK leading fielding practice. The minor league fields are to the left of Hammond Stadium if you are standing on the parking lot facing the Stadium
  17. To put that draft in perspective: At that point the Twins had Span as their established CF, Ben Revere a rookie in the majors and Arcia, Rosario, Hicks and Benson as their number 2-5 prospects (in various orders in various lists) behind Sano. Their real SP prospects were Gibson and Gibson alone. The last thing I wanted was another OF. I wanted pitching. On the other hand, the Twins got rid of 3 of those 6 OFs, trading 2 for SP and everything worked alright...
  18. Here. Links points to March, but there is a single game vs the RedSox on 2/28. The Minor League schedule has not been announced yet.
  19. Indeed. Kinda lost my bearings there for a second Towards the RSW airport and that is east (towards the Atlantic) and not west (towards the Gulf)
  20. Was listening to WFAN out of NYC, Mike Fransesca's show today, and actually he pointed out that Jeter is one of the top Righty hitters post war (career BA based), if you count hitters who played more than 10 seasons.
  21. If those 25 lbs (of muscle) help him hit 50+ instead of 30 HRs, I'd take the less range at 3B
  22. Nothing new. This has been SOP for the Twins. I was hopeful that with the 2 good FA signings and the Pelfrey re-signing this practice would stop this season, but..
  23. Hold it for a sec. You have him listed as the 8th top rated SS of "all time" and you think that he is overrated? Am I missing something here?
  24. Hate to say this, but, John's statement: is totally the opposite of preposterus. The Twins are a fun team to watch each and every Spring. Especially in person at Fort Myers. This is a fact. The last 3 seasons might have not been fun to watch them in June/July/August/September (for some people), but John's statement is a fact in my book... Sorry.
  25. "Ethics" and "spirit" of rules are open for interpretation. And speaking about "ethics" (i.e. what is "good" or "bad") in baseball is somewhat naive (Philosophically/Theologically/Whatever: Baseball is a game. Ethos is morality-centered; by definition a game is a non-moral situation.) As far as rules (in opposition to laws) go, the only way to interpret them is to push them and see what happens. And last time I checked, rules, as abstract contraptions occasionally written down, have no spirit (whatever that might be - and I don't mean Vodka.)
