  1. Newcomb will rank at the top of the Braves pitching list, but there are a half dozen "future ace" types already in the system. They certainly didn't need to acquire one. Also, you keep making this hitting point. I do not think hitting means what you think it does: Aybar over the last three years: .273/.308/.366, 92 OPS+, 1.5 TOTAL defensive bWAR Simmons over the same time: .252/.301/.357, 84 OPS+, 12.4 total defensive bWAR (worse single season was 3.5) Aybar had an OBP 20 points lower than Simmons last season.
  2. Nah, the contracts aren't the issue. They'll be rid of basically anything but Freeman and Markakis after 2016. The ballpark will be opening in 2017. They're even wearing a patch next year to commemorate the last season at the Ted. The pitching is very solid at the AA/AAA level, but the stud hitters they got into the system were all from low-A on down last year, so they're likely 2-3 years away at the soonest.
  3. I've seen Newcomb pitch before. Simmons had solid bat control, but he struggled to make great contact when he put the ball in play. He very seldom struck out and had a better OBP than Aybar last season. Definitely a better fit for the lineup the Braves were putting together. Please do not try to tell me what I have seen and have not seen with the team I not only follow, but cover and write about.
  4. Andrelton had a higher OBP in 2015, nevermind the worlds better defense. And no, I doubt I'll enjoy any pitcher as much as I enjoy an everyday once-in-a-century shortstop every day.
  5. Aybar's a one-year rental. The Braves' top prospect is Ozzie Albies, another player from Curacao who is only 19, but he would have finished the year at high-A if not for an injury, and he's absolutely the real deal. Defense just barely a tick below Simmons (though not the arm, though I don't know if anyone has ever had his arm at the position), and offensively a much different profile, but good OBP/speed guy with gap power right now.
  6. No, no way they can compete in 2017 without spending some major money.
  7. Newcomb is akin to Berrios in prospect rankings, so he's very well regarded, but the Braves already have a large amount of pitching prospects after last offseason's overhaul.
  8. My point exactly. My favorite player, who happens to wear my favorite number, on my favorite team. Now gone. Damn.
  9. I sadly have to post this with my favorite player leaving my favorite team. The Braves traded Andrelton Simmons and Jose Briceno to the Angels for Erick Aybar, Sean Newcomb, Christopher Ellis, and cash. Sucks.
  10. Former Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson has passed away of multiple organ failure. He was 29. Plenty of rumors and hearsay on what happened to put him in the hospital, but the real thing to worry about in this right now is that a life was lost much too young.
  11. ...or you have to wonder where they're polling, and how representative that polling is of the population that will vote in 2016.
  12. Source of the polls (not a great source, frankly): http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/elections/
  13. Polls reported today (without link, but I'm working on where these were taken from): Minnesota: Trump: 26 Carson: 19 Rubio: 16 Cruz: 4 Minnesota, H2H: Carson 50, Clinton 41 Rubio 47, Clinton 41 Trump 45, Clinton 42 Clinton 46, Cruz 41 Fiorina 45, Clinton 41
  14. I'm one of those lame people when it comes to nachos - meat, cheese sauce, real cheese, tortilla chips. No onions, no peppers.
  15. Okay, then the Moses bit is excused, but I've never heard from a single theologian I know (and yes, I know a few that teach various aspects of theology for different seminaries) make any claim that the pyramids were what were referenced. The same Hebrew was used for "store houses" many times throughout the old testament, but I'm guessing no one wants to claim there were pyramids all over the middle east.
  16. No, discussing grain storage and Moses really cannot be taken from the Bible. Nothing turning pyramids to food storage is Biblical either.
  17. I don't know how you could get that interpretation out of the Bible, no matter how liberal the translation of the original text was.
  18. He and Pujols are high in my "cheer for them regardless of what team they're on" list of athletes.
  19. Once he fielded it, he did everything right. However, Flores would have had a better view on the runner and a clean field on the ball if Wright didn't cut him off from fielding it. 9 times out of 10, that ball is just who can get to it best, but in that one situation, Flores was probably the best guy to field.
  20. Harvey dealing through 5
  21. Joe Torre is about second in power over the game to only Manfred, but coming to work in a business capacity for the Twins would absolutely be the job that'd pull him away from that...
  22. 19 seconds well managed should have resulted in multiple shots at the end zone and then the field goal. One thing Kill always emphasized in his wide receivers was a big catching radius, so he has guys who should be able to out-height and out-leap guys from Michigan on a one-yard jump ball.
  23. Very interesting article about Daniel Murphy showed up on my timeline today: http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/14009526/the-stages-understanding-root-daniel-murphy
  24. You were so close to me "liking" your post, then that last bit! Garble, garble!
  25. That every bit of media is bias against the GOP, absolutely. I find it ridiculous how much the right blames media for their perception in the American public, though. Couldn't possibly be their terrible policies that hurt the majority of Americans, could it?
