  1. It's the media's bias, you know...
  2. This why it's usually a good idea to build a playoff roster with more than two left-handers on the whole pitching staff.
  3. Oy, Franklin Morales...
  4. I will be honest that my views on SSM morphed a lot due to the conversations on BYTO. My personal faith still holds me to my beliefs on many things, but there was excellent discussion regarding having faith and still being able to love who you love. There are many who opened their minds in those discussions, and I won't single anyone out at all, but there are plenty on this board now whose expressed views on BYTO have morphed over the years, and they had morphed before even coming to this site due to the extended discussions that frequently happened on the "tough" topics on that site. Until recently, it was my biggest thing I missed in the transition to Twins Daily as I enjoyed having an intellectual discussion on life topics. It seems like those topics have become more frequent discussion points in the last 6 months to a year, and I appreciate having a well-moderated, issue-focused discussion with anyone, regardless of how opposite of my views their views may be.
  5. Simmons has jumped on this after causing it, and he's coming off as a complete dirtbag in this whole situation. I always found him slimy on air, so it makes me feel justified in that thought when he went above and beyond the slime level I thought he was capable of. I've had some interaction with folks on the Grantland staff, and this sucks for them. I'm a big fan of long form writing about sports, and even though I have to fit within the parameters of where I writer, I'd much prefer to release my top 100 list in one article rather than a slide show that's split up over multiple days just for page click purposes. A lot of good things started on Grantland and then developed further. Simmons, for all his faults, did have an exceptional eye for talent, and I'm curious how ESPN will re-assign those writers.
  6. Shoot, for those of us who came from BYTO, there were many discussions on LGBT issues there.
  7. I will say for me that I've attended pride day "festivities" when I was in the cities, but 6 hours is just a long way, and the Sioux Falls one (about the only town near with pride day activities) has a bad history of pushing limits to get a reaction rather than simply hosting a day about pride for who you are.
  8. Torii is a public figure who has taken this stand, and as a public figure, when you take an unpopular stance, you should be prepared for the backlash and have answers and explanations that intelligently explain your position, and Torii simply doesn't provide those. I think he's been piled on because of that, but on that note, his ridicule on the issue has really opened discussion on the issue in general and had many seeking out education on their own stance (which has changed some peoples' stances), and I'll take an informed discussion/debate over the alternative any day.
  9. Before he went to NY and became the push pin of anyone and everyone out there, ARod was considered well-spoken and a student of the game. Perhaps TV would be the way to bring back that image of him to the general public.
  10. The Royals have really taken advantage of every misstep of the Mets tonight. Even though the game's not anywhere near "close", it's a lot of fun to watch.
  11. When you find where I said that, I'll gladly retract it. Your arguments in this thread are what I'm saying, so I'm not sure what the heck you're fighting out, but I'm going to bow out because I've seen too many of these where you attempt to bait someone until they flip, and I'm not going to give you that. Thanks, though.
  12. This was my statement... How that got changed to me claiming that he said minorities are not smart enough to be at Ivy League schools is beyond me.
  13. That's not what I've said whatsoever. I've said his statements came off as minorities not being smart enough for Ivy League, but I never once said that was a quote or his true intent. He's just dancing a dangerous dance. The minority issue in baseball in early October is a timely thing to get page clicks until we fill all the jobs out there and see 3-4 minority hires and suddenly Fredi Gonzalez doesn't stand alone. This has little to nothing to do with sabermetrics. Sabermetrics and minority hirings have nothing to do with one another.
  14. I've stated it here. There's no way I could find it on my time line again as I have no idea who even posted it.
  15. I'm not sure if ARod is actually good with analysis.... ....or if the rest of Fox baseball is so incredibly bad that it makes him sound better.
  16. Facebook posts with excerpts from radio interviews. One was with Wilbon. I don't know the other interviewer.
  17. That implication has been made in interviews that Rosenthal has done on the article since its publishing. It wasn't reading into the article, it was clarification on what he said he meant by the article. The discussion he's had is specifically that Ivy League schools tend to have lower minority populations than college in general, so relying on those schools for jobs puts minorities at a disadvantage going forward. Regardless, I don't care if someone is black, brown, blue, or polka-dotted, any conversation trying to berate more intelligence in the decision making seats of the game is a conversation that a complete hack would put forth for page clicks and controversy, not something an esteemed writer would put forward.
  18. I just hope Luke continues to keep his dad at a distance, because that kid has a chance to be something special...
  19. Which, when extrapolated, comes to "minorities struggle to get into elite schools on their own merits, so they'll struggle to get employed". My version simplified the comment. The funny part is that so few of these guys actually went to an Ivy League school. Many of them went to "elite" schools throughout the country and/or worked on Wall Street, but it's not even a majority Ivy League sort of thing, so the point is foolish.
  20. Terrible timing as well with Michigan coming to town this weekend.
  21. In subsequent interviews on this article, he has clarified his comments to go exactly there. Nevermind Michael Wilbon, who is a minority that attended a primarily-white private school in Northwestern, had a discussion with Rosenthal on the issue and it was all about race and how so few minorities are at Ivy League schools, so it limits the minority hires into front office roles.
  22. No, the television...he was in that uppity neighborhood who had flicker boxes ahead of the rest of the boys and girls.
  23. Terrible news. Sad to hear. Wish you could put him in a role with the team.
  24. Depends on the level. Most all managers outside of Connie Mack played at least minor league ball, but recently, the trend is former major leaguers.
  25. The inexperienced manager angle has little to do with analytics, so I ignored that assertion. The guys hired with no experience are all former players. If you saw guys with no game experience getting hired for analytical reasons, then you may have a discussion there.
