    Yeah, not disagreeing, but Brooks had the ability to get 8-10 yards a pop in the way he runs in the first half, which at least keeps the defensive second level honest. The line simply could do nothing in the run game, which meant the second and third level had to give no credence to a fake, and that allowed them to key in purely on their coverage. Once again, that doesn't excuse the throw itself, but you can do a lot to set up a mediocre QB to have success.

    Leidner had clear throwing paths all first half long. Not saying he didn't on any of the INTs, but he was scrambling from pressure nearly every drop back in the second half. That leads to much worse passing, and we all know that Leidner cannot afford any downgrade in his passing quality.

    So, I'm an O-lineman, and that's how I see things, no apologies to that. I watched that first half, knowing the talent on the other side of the ball, and I was very impressed by the way the Gophers o-line was playing. Then, the second half came. Help blocks were missed constant. While they couldn't get a 0-1-2 hole run going in the first half, they were having very good success with chipping and turning the interior guys to find success in the 3-4 gaps, but those chips were either missed or simply not done in the second half, and the run game went nowhere, which allowed the D-Ends to just pin their ears back and go nuts on the tackles. I think the Gophers have an extremely talented offensive line. There's a reason they hadn't given up multiple sacks in something like 2 years before today, and it's not JUST a mobile QB. However, whether it was coaching, poor play, or a combination of both, the Gophers simply did not show up as an o-line in the second half, and it cost them the game.

    The issue is that you see the ability to make the needed throws. And then you see interceptions like he threw at the end of the game or you see balls all over the place in other games. It's just crazy to me how much he can change from game to game in his ability to spot a football.

    I had a convo with a friend from South Dakota State's coaching staff who watched the game after their rivalry game win, and he had the observation that Leidner is a guy with all the tools you could ever want in a QB. His prediction was that Leidner is in a QB competition for someone in the NFL within 5 years. He's run a pro system as well, so he'll take less time to adapt to the pros, helping his development. That's the thing that makes me the most upset. I would wonder if the coaching he's received is as much behind his issues as Leidner himself.

    He also had a handful of drops from his receivers and some poor route-running that he put the incompletion into a spot where no one had a chance to intercept it. Sometimes an incompletion isn't just a 0-1 on the stat line.

    This is the way the team needed to play all season. Leidner didn't blow anyone away, but he was efficient and made the passes needed, the run game did what it should, and the defense played like they could. Yes, it was Illinois, but last week was Rutgers, and I'd say Rutgers is quite a bit worse than the Illinois team that they stomped on the road today.

    I was not only referring to that last play. There were PI calls on the day with much less contact. There were plays with more contact not called. It's just crappy that inconsistent calls can influence the games the way they do. I have no assumptions the final play would have been called, though it typically is due to contact before looking for the ball. The issue is that lesser contact was called on a crucial 3rd and long on one of Iowa's FG drives, and both were going for the ball with equal right to it where the ball ended up thrown. Both teams wanted badly to lose yesterday, though. The Gophers just had more desire!

    So, seriously, what is defensive pass interference? It was called on plays that seemed like it shouldn't have been and not called on plays it should have been. I don't get it. At least the bad officiating on catches can be overturned by replay (as in the final drive), but you can't protest a penalty being called or not.

    Solid line play, but last year's linebackers are sorely missing, and I'm definitely worried about the pass defense due to that. I think the corners will be better in the end, but the D-line has been much better vs. the run than the pass, but there's youth there that could improve along the way to provide some heat and protect the corners. On offense, having the size at reciever that he does will allow Leidner to be accurate. I will say that he threw the best ball I've seen in a long time in the Colorado State game, but they simply didn't need his arm offensively because their line was carving up CSU's d-line so badly.

    Nice work by the Twins to make the #1 pick a challenge again! Exciting, especially knowing the Braves face the Tigers in the final weekend while the Twins play the White Sox. Could be a situation where the Tigers are playing for their postseason lives, but the Twins/ChiSox series will only be about pride...

    The crazy thing was that Liriano had legit no-hit stuff that day as well. He was walking guys, but his stuff was wicked as well. Then that night opened up with an incredible storm that ABSOLUTELY POURED as my wife and I attempted to find a laundromat at the midpoint of our trip. Good marriage building right there.

    I had to do the same thing in DC, but no tearing out as that game was Max Scherzer's no-hitter (and near perfect game).

    I keep score at every game, and I found the Eephus scorecards after seeing the quality of in-stadium scorecards go down drastically. My wife noticed this on our stadium tour honeymoon last summer - the vast difference in the offering to a fan wanting to be involved in the game. Instead, I scored the Braves/Twins games in a very nice quality scorebook that reminded me of the quality of a pro scorecard that I had utilized a couple times in college when offered the opportunity to score at games.

    Um...you do realize that college football does use a different ball - striped differently and laced differently, so it is easier to grip for QBs and easier to see in the air for WRs.

    It's not about top 10 dollars. It's about asking $3M+ and likely not going to be a top 10 pick. There's a ton of depth in the high school class in the guys that normally would be picked between 12-30 in a draft, as in probably 40-50 guys who would profile in that type of range normally, so many of them are using finances as their way to negotiate.

    After round 4, draft picks aren't protected, meaning that if a guy doesn't sign, you don't get a comp pick, which is why you see that starting in round 4, high schoolers start to disappear until round 11.

    I'd wager in a decade, there are a half-dozen draft-day Clayton Kershaws. There's one every generation that becomes Kershaw. That means maybe one every 25 becomes that guy. However, that profile even at that success rate is a better success rate than most body/skill types you can find in the draft. I won't speak for Hrbowski 100%, but I believe that's the intention of what he's saying.

    I don't think there are any elite guys. There are maybe 3 guys who would be guys at the back end of a top 10 most years, then 30 guys who would usually be eligible around 15ish, so 30ish guys total, not 30 from pick 15 forward. 30 guys, many of whom will end up before 15 due to the lack of higher end talent in the draft.

    The draft is deep in second or third tier guys, but doesn't have those elite talents that fit at the top. I could see 30 guys or so that would make sense as a pick in the 15-30 range of an average draft. Hence, you're seeing a lot of $2-3M price tags
