  1. I agree. I'll take Kaat on national broadcast over Joe halfabuck any day
  2. The discussion wasn't about what they did in WS play. It's about getting through 162 games plus the playoffs. Hell Glavine Smoltz and Maddux came up short in WS play 4 or 5 times. But the Braves don't get there without them. Same for Scherzer and Verlander in Detroit. Sometimes aces do come up short in big games. But that's irrelevant to the topic. If the topic was does having an ace guarantee you a WS Championship I'd agree with you 100%
  3. And that's being logical and reasonable
  4. And a shutdown inning too? Wow! Things are looking up
  5. 10 runs in 4 innings makes for a snails pace
  6. Is Baldelli managing KC too
  7. Well, they got 1/3 of an inning out of Columbe. Next man up. 1 pitch 2 outs
  8. Unfortunately they already have sold their collective souls to analytics. Pitching and hitting. Last night there was no one on the bench after the 7th inning except Polanco and he wasn't going in regardless. He subs in his bench en masse. So he lost gordon as a potential pinch runner in the 9th for example. Baldelli is doing everything by the Falvey/Levine playbook.
  9. French Fried sure pitched like an ace tho didn't he? LA had 2 the year before. Houston had 2 definite aces with Cole and Verlander and they had Greinke a solid #1 for years as their #3 or 4. Scherzer with Washington. He came out of the pen too. So don't make it sound like all the past WS winners didn't have aces. You cherry picked Atlanta. Giants had Lincecum and Cain 2010 and 2012 with Mad Bum as their 3rd starter. By 2014 he was an ace. KC lights out bullpen in 2015 was the only other one in recent memory that didn't have one. How good would the Twins be if they could say Ryan was their #3
  10. How do you define an ace. Well 1st you have to shoot down 5 enemy planes. Not all at once either. But it has happened. Where is Chief at when you need him?In years prior to oh let's just say 2015 or so an ace was a guy who was pretty much automatic. He was that GUY you could depend on to stop a losing streak. He earned the title because even if he didn't have his best stuff he would battle out of jams because he PITCHED. And most importantly he had a manager that stood behind him. Think Sandy Koufax 1965 World Series game 7 when he threw nothing but fastball after the 3rd inning because he couldn't locate his curve. There are aces out there today. But the metrics all say get him out of there when it comes to 7th inning or that dreaded 3rd time in the lineup. That's fine if you have a lights out bullpen. Or he's never went over 100 innings or some bs cuz his arm might fall off. No manager in his right mind would have tried to take out a Gibson or Jenkins or even a Jim Kaat type guy because even tiring they were still the best option. We're those old-timers better athletically than these over trained guys of today? No way. But they were mentally and there's no metrics for that. Today's pitchers don't need to battle because the manager has already made the call to the pen. And they'll still get their 20 or 30 mill. At my job I worked 80 to 100 hours every week. If my boss came to me and said hey your 1st 40 or 50 hours are real productive, after that it falls off. So we'll pay you the same money as if you worked ALL those hours but we only want you to work 1/2 of them I would have whooped for joy.
  11. Had 1 yesterday. And he was pinch hit for late in game
  12. How about those swings by 3 consecutive hitters with bases juiced. All quality ABs
  13. How does Smelzer feel now? I'll bet he could use some of that plop plop fizz fizz
  14. And all will be forgotten with his next home run
  15. Bad loss today. Need each and every winnable game. Lots of question marks regarding today's loss
  16. I'm not responding to people who either can't or won't read. I don't think ANY OF THOSE GUYS ARE ACES. I said that. And yes Ryan is NOT AN ACE. The A's promoted Sunny Gray as such when they trotted him out to face Verlander his rookie season. In time maybe. Not right now
  17. So the secret to Pagan is to have him throw 2 innings.
  18. Neither. I think his career ERA was around 7. That's Poison. Haha
  19. That's it! The blue glove has got to go.
  20. Poison is only mid 40s. He'd be an improvement over Shoemaker
