  1. So who dies next episode? I'll start: Brienne, Pod, Davos, Grey Worm, Vares, Jorah, Beric, Tormound, and Gendry.
  2. Does that group care nothing about the rule of law? I get the political pitfalls, but deciding not to enforce the rule of law because of political backlash seems particularly unseemly to me.
  3. Don't you judge me!!
  4. CNN is having like 6 townhalls tonight for those interested.
  5. Poll: Trump approval sinks 5 points after Mueller report, tying all-time low His approval is at 39% Only 34% support impeachment (59% of Dems). (I think it will take Mueller testifying to bring that impeachment number up).
  6. Unlike Bernie, Warren at least proposes how she would pay for things. It's unclear what kind of tax Bernie is behind. Warren just as whole 'nother level of policy detail than Bernie has. But generally I agree with you.
  7. I'm not sure resentment is viable policy consideration, and in any case, those people can vote for their interests at the ballot box. This is a similar argument for not raising the minimum wage: that people already making $15 dollars would be discounted in relation. These kind of arguments will always stifle any kind of benefit that only helps a subsection of society. I mean all the childless property owners might have a good reason to complain about their property taxes going to pay for schools, but thank god they don't do that. Or those that bike/walk to work sales tax goes to maintain roads. etc. etc. At some point, you do the thing that helps people, even if some people managed to navigate the problematic system by playing by the rules don't receive the same benefit.
  8. I do think we may have to cap student enrollment, and I think creating some kind of liability for universities in terms of students actually getting jobs might have the same effect. If we make it free, but not everyone gets to go, but create viable alternatives to college, I think it will drive down costs. Academia may take a big hit in that there may no longer be a need for so many professors, or perhaps the professors would need to do more teaching, and the graduate/adjunct teachers would get culled. Stripping out general education/liberal arts requirements would also save costs, and I think that highschools should be more active in giving a liberal arts education any way, leaving it for the university is crazy expensive way to culturally educate a society. Complex problem, and I'm just throwing ideas against the wall at this point.
  9. Right. I can think of a dozen better abled people to protect Bran than freaking Theon Greyjoy.
  10. I agree. But the shot Dany and Jon gave each other at the end, signals that there's some plan and I imagine they are off to use the dragons in some fashion.
  11. Well, we don't need to pay for the loans, because if tuition is free, there's no need to refill the pool of available dollars for loans in the first place. The key is paying for the tuition; it might just be cost shifting, but I think making tuition free could also drive down costs as universities won't be seeking those endless amount of loan dollars.
  12. I watched the first episode. It was okay. Semi-serious, but some elements seem a bit juvenile. I forgot about the show until I saw your post. Given that it has source material maybe I'll check out the rest of it, but the first episode didn't engage me enough to keep watching.
  13. Many of those character moments could be characterized as goodbyes.
  14. If we want to stop illegal immigration, let's hold accountable those people who hire them. As long as there is demand for illegal labor, people will keep coming. If they can't find work here, there's no reason for them to be here, and they will leave, or seek public help and be deported. I say we hold such employers with criminal strict liability--that is, they need not even know if a person is illegal, and still be charged with a crime. This would create an affirmative duty to verify someone's identity before hiring them. An anecdote, I worked at restaurant 20 years ago, the INS (before Homeland Security) found out some of the prep cooks and dishwashers had fake social security cards, so the Chef had to fire them all, but he told them as soon as they had new fake social security cards, he'd rehire them, which he did; they were still working there nearly a year later.
  15. Warren proposes cancelling 50K of student debt.
  16. Right unless they 24 hour police the entirety of the wall (which would be an enormous and endless cost), people will find away under and over.
  17. The booth guys mentioned Wilbur Woods, and I was like who, and I came across this article; neat story.
  18. This 538 chat on the Mueller report is a useful discussion for those wanting to know a bit more about what's in the report without actually having to read it.
  19. This is all thoughtful, but I do think the calculus has changes since 2008/2012 in terms of both appealing to the center and turning out the left. I think your point about Karl Marx obliquely acknowledges this. I'll say it did not work for Gore running on Clinton's success with a dash of environmentalism and elitism. Biden is likable, but he's generic and seemingly policyless, but we will see, maybe he will be more bold than I imagine.
  20. I think your analysis of why 2016 was lost focuses too much on demographics and not on the candidate, I'll leave it at that.
  21. Look, I don't need to insult you, but you've been saying the same tired song as well. I just don't understand your notion that disagreeing on how the election should be won and that I want realize my beliefs makes me selfish or any one on the left selfish. You're trying to do the same thing (believing the best way to defeat Trump is steering towards the center, and that also where your beliefs lie). I don't fault you for that even if I disagree with your perspective, but the smugness directed my way and at "the left" in general is not only insulting, it's old.
  22. FTR, I think any of the Democrats can win, and we (who vote in those primaries) should fight for what kind of policies we want as individuals, and this notion that the moderates or the left are somehow being selfish for fighting for what they believe in is so wrong-headed, it makes me cringe. We can have different ideas about what will win the election without resorting to self-righteous finger wagging. I also hope a conservative or three primaries Trump, I don't think they can win, but I do think it could help build a coalition for the party post-Trump.
  23. That's the kind of smugness that lead to Clinton's loss (though she's appreciably more unlikeable).
  24. All facts and articulation and none of the insult. Convincing per usual.
  25. I think the ideological middle still hasn't learned the lesson of 2016. (Hillary Clinton was a moderate whether we want to keep ignoring that fact or not). I'll say it over and over, Bernie (and perhaps Warren) has a more appeal to those persuaded by populism than a candidate that tries to pull out the 1980s playbook on Bluedog Democrats. I don't think people want moderation, they want ideas that actually help their lives. I think Medicare for all will sell better in the rust belt states than say a public option and championing our convoluted private healthcare system. Though the latter is arguably more moderate. As for Biden, does he have a single idea other than "I'm an Obama/Biden Democrat." Ugh.
