  1. The thing is that Morneau's worse years are within earshot of your benchmark. I don't think we should take that for granted. As you say, we should use this current year as primary indicator whether or not to resign Morneau. We can dream that the money (from not resigning Morneau) will be spent on some superstar free agent, but I don't see it.
  2. I agree that Willingham due to his age and the value he'd fetch should be the one to go. (I like your idea of getting Hansen from Pittsburg). I'm not sure Parmelee is going to hit as well as Morneau the next three-four years (of course, we need to watch this play out throughout the season). We don't know that Parm can even match Morneau's 2012 production, which we consider mediocre. I think it would be prudent to offer Morneau an incentive-laden contract spanning say three years, with an option, that might go as high as ten million a year, but would have a more modest baseline. If Morneau wouldn't take that I'd definitely extend the qualifying offer. The Twins have money to spend, and it's probably their preference not to spend big in free agency. I'd be disappointed if they let Morneau walk and go on to piecemeal the savings out over a couple of semi-high-profile free agents.
  3. Meyer goes six innings, with seven strikeouts and just one walk. He did surrender eight hits, including three doubles.
  4. Did he go on to reproduce?
  5. Honestly, it's one thing to offer non-expert critiques on game of baseball, because that information is readily available from watching the games and the statistical output of the game--but in terms of medicine and even front office management, we as fans just don't have the same quality of opinions because we're largely in the dark. That's frustrating, but lets not be so rash as to legitimize our medical critiques. What bother's me is that not noticing Maestro limping either indicates 1) negligence 2) laziness 3) or lack of personnel.
  6. Nope, it's Pat Dean.
  7. Meyer is starting the second game as of now. May got the 7 inning shut out 4K, 3H, 3BB.
  8. This. It's not Gardy's job per se to notice when his players are injured. Don't the Twins pay actual people (i.e. more than one) to watch for these kind of things? It's hardly a new phenomenon that players fail to disclose injuries.
  9. Mauer's a great player. But before long his will be a bad contract. I just don't see the Twins carrying two 20 million dollar players over the next several years...
  10. Right, but SF has been able to develop a succession of front end pitching, which is the real success of their formula. It's kind of incredible that the Zito deal didn't hamstring them.
  11. It's not about being lucky, it's about being risk adverse. I'm suggesting that there's a huge risk in investing hundred of millions into any arm. I'm not sure the Twins are ever going to do that for any player other than homegrown ones. Honestly, I'm not sure that the Twins will spend that money, unless a player really gives them favorable terms (like Josh Johnson returning home); I don't doubt that they will spend money on starting pitching, I'm just not sure we can expect them to go out and get a Grienke like player. I can also see the Twins resigning Morneau.
  12. The money committed combined with the health risk. There's a whole list of pitchers who sign mega-deal, only to become a payroll burden almost immediately...
  13. He always had the talent, it just took him five major league seasons to start to put it together.
  14. Is the rebuild accelerated to the point where you consider keeping Morneau and Willingham or one or the other? Will Morneau outproduce Parmelee over the next three years, and if so, at what cost will it become prohibitive? If Willingham doesn't stick around to DH, whose going to take most of that at bats there, a rotation of players who have more value when they are in the field? Investing in an "Ace" can be a quick way to kill a rebuild too. Though, it's hard not to covet a certain Bluejay pitcher with hometown roots...
  15. He means cirque jerque.
  16. If you're going to quote me, at least show me the kindness to fix my typos.
  17. Doumit's the guy they can afford to give less at bats to.
  18. I think the general point is that there really wasn't much difference mid-tier (or more highly regarded) guys and the bottom of the barrel guys. So it was much angst about nothing.
  19. Dickbert just chatted about how Marlins ownership made Redmond switch Fernandez and Nolasco. What's that all about? Will Nolasco really draw better primetime ratings er something?
  20. I like the aesthetic, for sure. But the Cap/Top of the car with the Minnesota logo looks 'off' to me, and, imo, muddles the whole concept of the cart.
  21. No worries. While I don't necessarily believe in the effectiveness of torture, imminent threat situations our sense of decency should probably fall to the side.
  22. However mediocre the 2013 Twins really are it's still a boon to my sensibilities as a Twin fan. The club is worth watching, and it's exciting to track our guys in the minors. I've always been fascinated by those Organization Rankings some sites published; I wonder how much jump we'll see for the Twins after this season...
  23. The salary does have the added benefit of being undesirable to other teams as well, perhaps his salary will allow Wood to pass through waivers. Pitchers will get injured, even if it means 'demoting' Fien to keep Wood around, it's probably prudent to do so.
