  1. When Dayton took a half-time lead, I was like OH BOY, but my luck did not hold. I doubt my final four holds up, but it's fun that mother serendipity has lead me this far. Oh, and it's still not too late to place wagers on your brackets everyone!
  2. Patrick Reusse ‏@1500ESPN_Reusse Twins send Buxton & Berrios to minor league camp, w/ 7 others: Kepler, Meneses, Garver, Turner, Duffey, O'Rourke & Rogers.
  3. US Constitution has supremacy (if it didn't federalism would fall apart). Courts tend to resolve any differences between the state law and federal law, by concluding that as along as the federal government has the power to make the law under the Constitution, and the law doesn't commandeer the state, the federal law wins the day. For instance, in Obamacare the individuate mandate was Constitutional because it's really a tax. However, the law couldn't command the states to use Medicaid to subside the poor, under threat of taking all Medicaid funding. The gay marriage issue has already been resolved by the Supreme Court, as to which set of laws controls, hence the problematic defiance of the Alabama judge.
  4. I guess there's just a learning curve that's unavoidable; I just wished I'd see a more diverse group of owners taking advantage of the firesales by new teams. Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys.
  5. Part my problem is with DEM/Nick, he's a commissioner, and may have knowledge someone has taken over team before others. As with Dynamic Inertia/Red Dogs, DEM made trades with that team before it was announced we had knew owner, giving him essentially a head start to take advantage of the information gap. Just my two cents.
  6. I think some of the trades happening with new owners seem rather predatory; new owners seem eager to acquire poor assets (future draft picks, selling far too low), and well, a few established owners might taking advantage of the perceived ignorance. What do you think?
  7. Cost certainty can also make Dozier a more attractive trade candidate down the road, ala Span.
  8. Mike Berardino is reporting the Twins are close to an extension. Steve Adams over at mlbtr provides more context.
  9. That he came forward, or at least is coming clean now, speaks quite a bit about his ability to cope. The draw of addiction may come and go, but at least he might be passed the shame that leads to secrecy. Addiction is part and parcel with self-loathing, so here's wishing Josh Hamilton the best. For some reason, I recall the incident in Texas when he tossed the ball up to fan in the upper deck...it can't be easy to get over something like that, especially when you've been wrestling your own demons.
  10. Especially how DEM tried to leverage it into getting something for him. Oi.
  11. The hiccups are to be expected with the change in commissioner and so many owners. But threatening to quit over any of them is petulant. I seriously doubt any one was really bent out of shape, though people love to complain.
  12. I had hoped the draft would move slow enough that your pick wouldn't be an issue, but when I saw we got there last night I reposted your message a couple weeks earlier. Did you get flack for it over email or something? I took a big risk at 11 with Olivera, I sure he signs before opening day; I think I did well in the second round with Yoan Lopez and AJ Reed. I like your draft so far Ben, Hoffman is good value there, and Ibanez is nice second round risk; Castillo should be good right out of the gate.
  13. Baseball America released their lauded prospect list today. 2) Buxton 13) Sano 36) Berrios 61) Nick Gordon 62) Alex Meyer Interesting to see the range of evaluation in this year's prospect lists.
  14. I think the Twolves just traded for their next coach.
  15. Prospect lists are trying to make good bets. I'm not sure there's been any studies I believe in on the issue, but hitting prospects seem to me inherently less risky than pitching prospects. Injury, longevity, and consistency seem more obtainable through hitting prospects, even if such an unbalanced approach as the Cubs' tends to fly against common sense, or may not inevitably work out. As for the prospect lists, they seem less invested in how this list of prospects serves their current team, and far more interested in the future statistical production of the individual players regardless of team, or even how long it takes each one to get there.
  16. Kiley McDaniel's released FanGraphs' Top 200. Here's his primer, explaining his approach which does differ from other outlet's. McDaniel's can be conservative, while he likes ceiling, players that have questions about reaching that ceiling are discounted in his ranking pretty severely (e.g. Alex Meyer). As jimmer notes in the other fangraphs thread seven Twins made the list, and six in the top 73. Buxton - 2 Sano - 15 Berrios - 24 Meyer - 71 Gordon -72 Stewart - 73 Polanco - 108 Thorpe* - 142-200 (honorable mention) */hattip jimmer
  17. Probably deserves it's own thread. I'll start one.
  18. That's correct, however, if they don't sign before opening day, you forfeit the pick and player. That happened to me with Soler whom I drafted in the second round hoping he'd sign before the season; he didn't so I lost him and he was available in the following draft. If Mancada doesn't sign before the draft, it will be interesting to see how far he slips. I also wonder how people will weigh the different groups of players, there's quite of a few international guys that may not be on people's radar that may have as much projection as the drafted guys...
  19. Any thoughts on the upcoming Minor League Draft? I think this should be one of the more interesting ones with all the international signings, cuban defections, and draftees. I think there's a potential for lots of good 'specs to slip.
  20. It's fine to believe that small stature works against establishing the kind of plane that leads to MLB success, but to make that case absolute is not only stubborn but lazy. I'm sure there's various, scoutable skills, attributes, habitts that lead such pitchers to succeed; I'd like to know if Berrios possess any of those qualities, and Klaw sidesteps the inquiry. Smart guy, but his self-satisfaction affects his craft.
  21. I originally drafted Soler (twice, actually), and I had similar health concerns about him and decided I could afford to move him last offseason. I probably sold low. I can't remember how you acquired him, but you got better value than I did (Josh Hamilton). That you got two players, one at the middle infield, certainly minimizes your risk. I just traded for Reddick; I think I bought pretty low. Colome is a nice arm, but he's already 25 and isn't slated for the rotation. I'm looking forward to the minor league draft. Should be interesting to see how people value the international guys vis-a-vis the drafted guys.
  22. There's a time and place to teach players lessons on attitude and discipline; I'm thinking benching during the playoffs isn't one of them.
  23. Traded Huston Street for Dylan Bundy and Raul Mondesi Jr. today; hadn't planned on dealing for prospects, but hard to pass that up.
  24. How many stop-gap excellent-defensively centerfielders are really viable options for the club? Bourjos (which would require more than money to acquire)? The Twins are in a sticky situation until Buxton gets here and I'm not sure what kind of investment would actually benefit the pitching staff until then.
  25. I'm not sure how much covering CF matters when the team was noncompetitive in the long run, In the short term, it made for some unwatchable baseball, but the future assets of May and Meyer may better serve us fans than our memories of the semi-competitive play of centerfielders the past two years. I don't think TR is trying to fool anyone on the 2015 centerfield situation. I think the team has too much invested in its internal opitions, and must entertain Hicks et al. until Buxtun prevails.
