  1. I agree with the dissent on the either/or position...meaning we either push all our chips to the middle of the table and try to compete next year or resign ourselves to 2015 or beyond. Clearly, the Tigers are better. SP 1-5 they are light years ahead of us. With V-Mart coming back, their lineup will probably be better. At the end of last year, I was not in favor of trading Willingham. Good grief, we needed power and he was it! That said, his value will never be higher and teams like the Braves and Rays have young pitching they would part with. Span's value also won't get much higher. With a surplus of young outfield talent in the minors the Twins can make moves that will improve the team for next year and also build for the future. What would our outlook on the Twins be had THEY made the deal with Miami and not Toronto? We'd have a star shortstop who would fill our leadoff spot, two solid starting pitchers to go with Diamond and an outfielder in Bonifacio that would have stepped in to LF paving the way for a Willingham trade. We have some tradeable assets, the question is how do we use them and how aggressive will be be? Will the best options be gone before we pull the trigger or will waiting improve our leverage. (This is by far the best site to keep up on the Twins with the best bunch of guys sharing their opinion).
  2. Great post, great comments. My 2-cents...I think trading Willingham to the Braves for young starting pitching (Hanson, Minor, Teheran, Delgado) and Span and a prospect to Tampa for Shields or Hellickson is a start. A big question to answer is what prospect in the package for Shields/Hellickson and what prospect with Willingham if we asked for 2 Braves pitchers instead of one. Still, you could conceivably have Sheilds/Hellickson at the top of your rotation with 1 or 2 of the Braves young starters and Scott Diamond in your rotation and you haven't spent a dime in free agency. Maybe you add an Edwin Jackson or Brandon McCarthy as a FA. Your starting pitching is MUCH better. Gibson is a possibility in June. If you kept Morneau that would put Parmalee in RF. You need a LF'er. Hicks is not even a consideration until at least July. But a team that could pitch like that could compete with a little luck in 2013 (and face it, most every team needs a little luck). It would certainly be set up to compete in 2014 with prospects like Arcia, Hicks, Gibson, Hendricks etc...a year older. SP Shields, Minor, E. Jackson, Diamond (Delgado/Gibson) CF Revere 2B Carrol C Mauer 1B Morneau DH Doumitt RF Parmalee 3B Plouffe LF ??? (Arcia?) SS Florimon/Dozier The lineup isn't as strong but the pitching staff is built to keep you in games.
  3. I agree with Riverbrain. If you're going to deal Span/Revere/Willingham/Morneau etc...the Twins simply must get pitching back in return. As Gibson and J.O. Berrios or Liam Hendricks develop along with the other arms we would acquire in a trade the Twins could find themselves able to trade pitching to fill other holes in 3 years or so. The Twins should be able to compete next year. The fan base will demand it. If we stink it up next year again, Gardy and Andy will be gone. The idea of Stephen Drew for the "right price" is interesting. Bonnes or Seth should define what the "right price" is.
  4. If we traded both Willingham and Span, we would have Revere in CF and Parmalee in RF. We could come up with an affordable LF"er. But what if we had Shields/Hellickson...Minor/Hanson, Delgado/Teheran in our rotation? Throw in a FA like Edwin Jackson. SP: Shields, Minor, E. Jax, Diamond, (Baker, Gibson, Hendricks, Deduno). What a different rotation. One that could contend in the A/L/ Central.
  5. I'm all for trading Willingham to the Braves for pitching and Span to the Rays for pitching. Look at the lineups of the Rays, A's Braves...they are underwhelming. What those teams can do is PITCH. We could/should move BOTH Willingham and Span to load up in the primary area we are WEAK...Pitching.
  6. Great Discussion. Always appreciate Bonnes, Seth and Thrylos. Riverbrain made some good points as well. My humble opinion is that our division is so winable on a year to year basis that to think we need to undertake some 5-year rebuilding plan is foolish. We need starting pitching. Lots of other teams do as well. We will have to out-bid several teams to accomplish this. I like the idea of offering Span as a centerpiece to acquire a good young pitcher. Maybe offer Span to the Nationals in a package for Detwiller and Lombo. Maybe to the Braves for Teherhan and make it a bigger deal and go after Prado. He could solve our 2B problem. Trading for a Josh Johnson or Brandon Morrow or James Shields should also be considered. (Once BJ Upton is gone, Rays may be in the market for a CF/Leadoff type guy. I think E. Jackson has proven he can pitch in the A.L If you trade for someone, sign someone like a Jackson or McCarthy and take a flyer on one other SP (not necessarily Baker, but that type of guy, you have a rotation that could compete in the A.L. Central and you simply move Revere to CF and the top of the order and play Parmalee in RF.
  7. As usual, Thrylos is spot on. Blackburn has NEVER been a good pitcher. The only way the Twins can get back into contention for a division title next year in a VERY mediocre division is to go out and get 2 solid starting pitchers. And in baseball today, starting pitchers cost MONEY. A LOT of it!! It's time for the Pohlads to pony up about $17-$18 million per pitcher.
  8. Twinsaholic makes good points. I would trade Pavano, Capps and Liriano for sure. Pavano could help a National League team. It's time to remove the frustrating inconsistency of Liriano, the better he pitches over the next month, the more intense the bidding will be for his services. Capps will surely bring something of value. I would also look to move Blackburn to a National league team. Last night, typical Blackie effort. We score 11 and hang on to win. I'm sooo sick of watching him pitch. I think Revere is ready. Time to move Span for some solid prospects. If we trade Pavano, Capps, Liriano and Span and get good to decent prospects, and then sign 2 free agent pitchers this off season (Greinke, Edwin Jackson?) we can be a contender next year in the mediocre A.L. Central.
  9. He was one of my favorite Twins pitchers growing up. "Bozzy" was awesome in 1969 but was a pretty good pitcher in the mid 60's as well. 67 is too young.
  10. Sotafan hits the nail on the head! No matter what we do trade-wise this year at the deadline or in the off season, we need to pony up the CASH to sign TWO starters for the rotation. The pitchers he lists are the caliber we need to go after. Hamels is a pipe-dream. He'll either stay with Philly or sign with the Dodgers. Zambrano is a head case. Colby Lewis has shown he can pitch in the A.L. Sanchez, E. Jax and Marcum would all make a decent #2. Greinke is the target for #1. I could even see keeping Liriano around for the #5 spot if we can't get a decent prospect for him. Baker and Pavano gone. Trade "Blackie" to an N.L. team where he has at least a 10% chance of survival. He can't pitch in the A.L.
