Spring Training Games, Week of 3/9 - 3/15
h2oface replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Dodgers have been doing it for years, just with better talent, and results. Twins try to do it by bringing up players and then switching positions. Not only are they going through the stress of being new to the show, but now they are thrown out there playing a position they are not prepared for. Defense really suffers. -

Good thing he is healthy and in top shape. He’s just building confidence. And if you listen to him being interviewed, he justifies it very loquaciously. -
Agreed. I guess you missed the follow up….. in a reply just a couple posts later....... "....And like they say for the vets, it doesn't matter, just stay healthy....."

Not that much. He gave up 3 earned with 4 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings his first game (such a small sample, for sure, coming into this game with a 13.50 ERA), and the unknown today only let 1 of his 2 inherited runners in. So sure, a bit. And like they say for the vets, it doesn't matter, just stay healthy. Unfortunately, it seems part of the requirements for being in the best bullpen in MLB, like last year, is to give up a lot of inherited runs for your teammates. 😇

Lopez's performance and shiny 7.94 spring ERA gets buried with all the relief disappointments. If this keeps up, it may become the most important news.

Canterino may as well start pitching with his other arm. Definitely drop him from the 40 man. Apparently not meant to be a professional baseball pitcher.

Just trade Julien already. He might be real good somewhere else. Not here. Not with who runs the team now. And regardless if he can hit lefties, he is a liability in the field, and aren't you just sick of watching him take so many good pitches, and especially 3rd strikes? I am. It doesn't matter what arm the pitcher is pitching with you don't swing anyway.

Maybe. But Wallner was sooooo horrible and not ready in ST that he shouldn't have even made the team. He was in shape. And he didn't get injured. But he wasted so many team opportunities in April because of it, and it even took him a while in AAA to get going. That means it took him about 3 months to get up to speed. ST ABs and success does count for confidence, and preparation, I just read this article about Julio Rodríguez and I wish more guys on this team that tanked the last month and a half of last season had the same attitude about ST. These guys should all be in shape coming in, and more at bats, not less, should only help them to be ready to be full throttle come opening day. Especially if you have a history of being a slow starter. https://www.mlb.com/news/julio-rodriguez-getting-more-reps-in-spring-training?partnerId=it-20250226-12728275-mlb-1-B&utm_id=it-20250226-12728275-mlb-1-B&lctg=91699321

"However, ill-informed Baldelli haters can rejoice (they won’t): he's putting down the figurative “spreadsheet” and relying on his feel for the game to see Martin's future potential and impact with the Twins." That's a lot to unpack there. From the passive aggressive dis of observant, expressive, and knowledgeable fans, to thinking that if Baldelli says it, it is going to happen. Talk is cheap. We will see. But then, not if Martin doesn't make the team, which is surely not a sure thing.

For those calling for a "meritocracy" for ST performance, Baldelli totally shoots that down as stupid in the first video clip at the top of this article: "It's not about the performance, it's about a lot of the other things. Don't pay atentention to the performance as the carrying factor here......." https://www.mlb.com/twins/news/derek-falvey-discusses-key-topics-for-twins-2025-season

I guess nobody remebers Santana at the plate and in the field for April and May last year. Offical Score Keepers are charity workers. It looks like, regardless of the "changes" that would happen this year, the rental vets are going to be playing way too much for my taste. Good luck to us all.

It is yet to be seen for this Management group to acutally pick the players that perform the best in ST universally. Sure, the money players and a couple that are going to be money players are in no matter what. If you have an option, it matters not that you earn the nod out of camp. If you are in a supposed competition, the real decision has already been made. Hell, there was no way Wallner should have made the 26 out of camp last year by ST performance, but there he was, and he continued his oh-fers with K after K into the season, not even close to hitting a ball, and a month in AAA. There is not doubt in my mind that, other than injury changing it, this will not be a meritocracy by ST performance, and it is already decided, whatever it is, including the pitching staff, regardless of what the management says to the press.

Can a Healthy Joe Ryan Elevate to Ace Status in 2025?

Anything? Amazing anyone even keeps track of it. Such misguided fans. -

Better? Only the homers think so, it seems. The overall individual actual stats don't, and the projections from most of the prognosticators outside the home team sphere don't. Lopez tanks a good portion of the season yearly, and an ACE is never a 4.00+ ERA pitcher (even over 3.5 is not really top notch). I guess you might be ignoring the downs that gets him over 4. And he was healthy. I hope Lopez can actually perform better, and deserve the opening day starts. Lopez is always talked about how his "advanced metrics" show him better than the stat line he actually earns. Personally, I like the final stat lines' story better than the hopeful projections. -

All worth considering, for sure. This kinda reminds me of the parenting, "So your friends are all doing it. If your friends all jumped off a cliff, would you do it, too?" Just because baseball has such low standards now for starting pitching, I guess because the whole league sucks as a whole, that that is where the aspirations should be. Grading on the curve just meant the whole class was inadequate in their preperation. -

Adding a league average player to the team to make the team better? Sure. Is league average even a recipe for a .500 team? Fading vet that tanked last year. Just this FO style, even when they had a larger budget. I would rather see them go with youth, even though the "youth" on the roster looks like it really isn't youth anymore. 26 and youth? Sure it is. Right. But it is a lot younger than 35ish. But hey, I just read the new beat writer declaing "best bullpen in MLB" so maybe we don't need so many runs.
-
I certainly get the, you know, the potential. The pedigree. The projection. But I also find it kinda depressing the 3 out of the top 5, and 6 of the top 10 have never even seen the Show, and only one has any real extended time there, and Woods-etal is the rated only the 7th best. Matthews, Festa and Lee..... all showed some hope, but certainly not a wow. Our best players under 25 on the Team, can't even make the team yet. I wold be more excited if the best young players actually were MLB players.

Is the Minnesota Twins' Bullpen Philosophy Justified?

Exactly. I read that as the main point of the post, without spelling it out as you boldly did. -
Is the Minnesota Twins' Bullpen Philosophy Justified?
h2oface replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With the playoffs what they are now, to focus on comparing your team to the division is folly. You are compared against the league, not the division. When the bullpen pitches, usually, at least 4 innings a game these days, to think that your bullpen is an aside is why you don't win games in the playoffs, or get to the playoffs.” Relievers accounted for 394 1/3 of the 760 innings thrown in the postseason last year, “ (Well, that and swinging for the fences no matter what, and not swinging at good pitches in the zone and swinging at pitches not even close, and playing horrible defense, running bases poorly, and....... Scoring runs with situational hitting also helps, eh?) They sure didn't look anything close to the best pen in MLB in August and September, and they are the same guys except for Thielbar, who was cooked all year, (and in spring training). May as well go with what you got now though, because they don't spend on anything the last two years, anyway. -
The Time for "Getting Creative" Is Upon Us
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My bet is his creativity is being directed towards how he is packing his bags to be ready, and how quick you can get out of town when the deal goes down......
