  1. You are right, but I didn't compare them. I found it odd that the OP brought up Arcia when talking about Vargas.
  2. It is the battle of the small sample sizes. Vargas' July vs August numbers. Which numbers are a reflection of his true talent? Love the Arcia reference. Yup, sometimes being able to mash a ball isn't enough. It isn't enough when it does not happen enough. It has to happen even more when when you can't catch the ball.
  3. Not after they resigned Mauer and Morneau. With Mauer's contract adding another 20 million a year player to a 120 million budget would mean 2 players are eating 1/3 of your budget. The Twins are not going to find the 20 million in revenue to do that. Television contract doesn't come until 2023. There isn't the long term money other clubs have.
  4. This whole meme the Twins could have spent money on one great pitcher gets old, really old. The year they signed Nolasco and Hughes there was no other free agent pitcher out there. Tanaka required a posting fee. His 4 year contract plus a posting fee Nolasco's and the original Hughes contracts wouldn't come to meeting that. close to paying that. Add in Santana's the next year and you would be OK for Tanaka. But not for Sherzer. r Really old wanting what isn't available
  5. Saying Molitor will be the manager for 2017 in no way makes him untouchable. Utter nonsense. Whatever the background of the new is will be an indication of where the problems in the organization lies. They need to be addressed before you worry about the manager. Secondly, with a new GM, Molitor might not want to manage as a lame duck. I would hope that he isn't doing this for the money.
  6. I do not know why there is the outrage over the GM not having their guy as manager. Jim Pohlad does not operate that way. Ryan did not choose Molitor. as Pohlad was in on the interviewing process. If Pohlad didn't leave the choice up to Ryan, he sure is not going to let hiring a manager be the first thing a new first time GM does. To call it vile is to ignore how a team with an active owner works. The notion that a first time GM has a clue the day they walk onto the job that qualities of the people underneath them is absurd at best.
  7. The rate for pitchers ranked outside the top 10 having a WAR leas than 3 over their first 6 years is over 40% That he was rated as a top 100 prospect really doesn't mean much.
  8. Mauer to the Brewers for some prospect named Lucroy and their injury prone SS whats his name. Sweeten the pot by throwing in Baker and get some outfield prospect named Cain. The Brewers were trying hard to win now by adding veterans. Since Morneau was coming up for a contract, Morneau straight up for a young pitcher named Kershaw. Colda woulda shouldas Edit. Of course in one of these deals adding Brian Duensing would be the deal clincher. how bad could have Anderson screwed up Kershaw?
  9. Put A-Rod at 3b. Claim Gomez for CF. Send Berrios, Chargois, Polanco, Sano and Kepler down so Rochester can win a title and the players can remember what winning baseball is. Bring up Beresford, Britton, Van Mil, and Walden up so they can get a taste of the big leagues before they retire. September call ups is anyone on the 40 man roster you think has no real reason to be there and not already in the major leagues It would be a perfect plan for Antony if he thinks there is no shot to get the GM position. As the oposing team would be far enough ahead not to worry, ARod could get up to maybe even get to 715 with a little juice and a Whizzinator. 110 here comes the Twins.
  10. 3 weeks in the minors is no big deal. Hopefully he makes it look like batting practice.
  11. League average LOB% is around 72% . Santiago is a little better at 75%, Not exceptional but a whole lot better than Nolasco. Nolasco was down around 65%
  12. If you ever mentioned that Nolasco had a better FIP or xFIP than ERA there was some backlash. Now with Santiago suddenly it means something. One way statistics for the boo birds
  13. Please copy and paste where I said McPhail was a failure as a Twins GM. McPhail did not have success with the Cubs or Orioles. He is a great example of hiring success from outside your company to a higher level doesn't always work. If your comment was your retort to which GM was promoted from assistant GM, you should know what assistant GM was promoted from a failure, I would have expected you to know that Ryan was never an assistant GM, nor was he recently promoted,. There to my knowledge was never a book or movie of him. Sandy Alderson's last 5 years with a team were an abject failure. His replacement was his assistant
  14. A college player drafted in 2008 is not even through their peak years. A high school player drafted then is just starting their prime. That is the problem with trying to figure out how good your draft guy is.
  15. Slid down prospect ranking, he was as high as 4 in the Giants organization. Ranked as high as 86 on a prospect ranking list. Before you all get exited, one study showed it was about a 35% chance of a pitcher of this ranking accumulating 3 WAR.
  16. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=137
  17. From preseason 2016 rankings 12) Adalberto Mejia, LHP, Grade C+: Age 22, posted 2.45 ERA with 38/18 K/BB in 51 innings in Double-A, season cut in half by PED suspension then a sore shoulder. Some see him as mid-rotation starter with fastball, change-up, slider, but I think he is more of a bullpen asset in the long run.
  18. You still missed the point. As far as Antonyy not understanding metrics, you haven't shown that he does not understand the metrics that Jack Goin presents or works on. It is what have you said lately sort of thing. I know it is a real difficult concept for some here to grasp but even past 30 one still can learn You should know the answer to your question on successful assistant from a failed GM. The team he was an assistant on in the 5 years previous lost over 90 games twice. Had the benefit of strike shortened seasons so as to not lose even more. Pretty famous guy, too. Got promoted to executive vice president recently. Had a book written about him. Movie, too. Similarities to Antony end there
  19. I would doubt that they are not going to get a successful GM to come here. They could get a candidate with past failures to come in. Any of the assistant GMs it then comes down to subjectivity in determining who is better qualified. If there is some charming individual out there with a strong player development track record, great. Go get him. Number crunchers as your best candidates, it will be a crapshoot.
  20. You still missed the point. Your comment in Antony disinterest in analytics is also unfounded.
  21. Kahn was a local example of a miserable fail. The point that sailed past you is that hiring outside is not a sure answer. The Reds hired the assistant GM of a mid market team that was doing well. It didn't work out. They then hired an experienced GM from a team with a winning tradition, it still hasn't worked. San Diego hired a bright assistant GM . 3 bad drafts, trades that produced only one prospect it would be hard to say Hoyers time in San Diego was anything special yet some say he should be hired here. If Antony can in a couple months on the job articulate the strengths and the weakness of the Twins system and how the fixes will work he might be the best candidate. He certainly had a front row seat as to what went wrong, nor was he in a position to change it. It would not be certain either way because I don't think anyone here knows what he knows. I know he can articulate the company line, I don't know if he had ideas on how to do things differently. I have worked with people who could espouse the company line and when they went into management changed the garbage in tolerable. Had one who turned the place into hell. You just don't know.
  22. He gets the blame when the scouts guess wrong, Ryan can get some credit for scout being right.
  23. There is a lot of season left. When clubs get done selling assets it might be hard for a team to tank when Atlanta, the Reds, Brewers, Rays are done. The White Sox, Angels, Arizona and San Diego could also implode. That would be a lot of bad teams. I seem to recall a lot of past Twins teams giving hope for the future with a strong second half . I also think Molitor is too much of a competitor to tank
  24. Andy McPhail went from genius in Minnesota to idiot in Chicago. Sandy Alderson has been from genius to bum and back. Time will tell if the "bold" move of Larussa's hiring shows much. Glen Taylor got rid of the country club and ended up with Kahn. Outside isn't always better. If Antony is auditioning the first thing he better do is bring in a mind that understands pitching as an assistant, special assistant and/or minor league pitching directory. After that, if he can sell his organizational philosophy to Pohlad and get a job, he probably wouldn't have a hard time selling players on Minnesota. He wouldn't have to complain about not being able to give money away.
  25. To make a big trade Ryan would be trading highly ranked prospects or first and second year players. That is not, has not nor will ever be Ryan's method of doing things. Anything else the Twins have to trade would not fall into the big trade category
