  1. I suppose 3-0 lead off Buchholz is nothing to sneeze at, but why do I still have this sense of impending doom? I was really hoping we could blow this open in the 1st inning.
  2. Hey, wait...you're getting paid to post on game threads? Sweet! Who do I talk to to set that up?
  3. Man, we're going to regret leaving those bases full.
  4. Can we do it every other half innings so that it's only Twins?
  5. Not at all. I'll just deny it and ignore the physical evidence to the contrary. Politicians do it all the time, and it seems to work as they keep getting reelected.
  6. The W-L record isn't that surprising, given the run differential (111-117). If we've been able to do that with all our current problems, think what is possible if the bats start producing like many hoped.
  7. I've always believed that if you don't seek to reach beyond what you think is possible, then you will never do anything of value. I'll pick the Twins to win 3 out of 4 this series. Of course, if they don't, I'll deny I ever made this post.
  8. Was the thought of making him a starter a reflection of some uncertainty on how some of their other newly acquired starters would fare? The idea that if they stumble Perez could be a back-up? If so, the need to do so seems less now than it might have in February.
  9. I'm not saying the rotation has been good - no doubt we are on the bottom half of all statistical categories. But we all knew that was going to be the case this year anyway, and it is nowhere near as bad as many pundits were predicting in February, and nowhere near as bad as last year. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts, and if that means I wear rose-colored glasses, then I'm ok with that. Without optimists you wouldn't have pessimists.
  10. As we enter the 6th week of the season, we find ourselves roughly upside down of what many expected: The rotation hasn't sucked. Indeed, the combination of Worley, Pelfrey & Correia has had 8 quality starts out of 18, and the rotation as a whole has an ERA under 5.00. The hitters have yet to get started, with only Ramirez, Escobar & Carroll above .300 and a team average of .240 and team OPS of .683 Who woulda thunk it?
  11. Taking your stated question at face value: Because the players they had, even in 2010, were not going to be a winning team going forward, so it was best to start shipping them out and start rebuilding for the next wave.
  12. We'll have to fix that - quick. Start dangling some of them as trade bait.
  13. "Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, where the deer and the antelope play; where seldom is heard a discouraging word, and the sky is not cloudy all day."
  14. Ever? I don't know about that. But I do agree that the future is brighter than it has been in some while.
  15. It's not often someone can go 3-for-8 the first week in May and have their average drop, but that just shows the start Kyle has had this year. Kyle started two games and came in late in a third. He added another RBI to his total (9 for the year now) and is now batting .388/.464/.551. Defensively the week was a push, as he threw out a runner at 2nd in Thursday's game, but had a passed ball last Sunday. In spite of the start, Kyle will no doubt be disappointed as he has been placed on the DL for issues with his Achilles tendon. Here's hoping for a quick recovery and that he can keep his form going.
  16. Good for Murphy. I met the family that had unofficially "adopted" him while he was in Fort Myers last summer. Glad to see him move to a full-season level.
  17. It just seems to me that everybody is assuming that the first time Gardenhire has raised this issue is here, in a public forum. I just have a hard time believing that. I read between the lines here and it sounds to me like they've tried to work with Plouffe to teach him the position and they are a bit frustrated that he is not picking it up as quickly as they think a MLB player making half a mil a year should. At this level managers shouldn't be sugar-coating it when players make mistakes. In looking at the quote, I don't see anything pejorative other than Plouffe made a mistake and it was costly, which is just the truth.
  18. I think he was trying to win it in the 10th, so it wouldn't go much longer, and I can't fault him for that. I'd rather have him be aggressive and try to win than be passive and try not to lose. And Fien had only thrown 13 pitches - no reason not to send him back out, although again once the runner got in scoring position it would have been reasonable to bring in a fresher arm.
  19. Hey, what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own doghouse is none of my business.
  20. Not to nit-pick, but it was in 2011 that they had a payroll north of $110M, and they lost 99 games that year, so it's not all about the money spent on payroll. I would also say that the Twins "dominance" in the 2000s was as much a product of the poor shape of the other franchises as it was due to excellence in the Twins; when you consider that their poor post-season record is more understandable (although no less disappointing). Bottom line - baseball is a business, and owners will spend money only to the point that it generates a profit (nor do I think they should be expected to go beyond that point). I think for a mid-market franchise such as the Twin Cities that means we can reasonably expect to challenge for the division crown each year, but we can't expect to dominate, nor should there be expectations of world series crowns. Every once in a while we might gel beyond our natural ability and surprise people, but we will never be Boston or the Yankees.
