  1. No. "Twins baseball at its finest" would have involved leaving the bases full with no runs in. This actually turned out not that badly.
  2. In the spirit of a recently posted article, would that have improved the win probability?
  3. How quickly the wheels can come off...
  4. Help needed...on the verge of schizophrenia...passionate about Twins...have Sanchez on fantasy team...help needed...
  5. Is there some contest I wasn't informed about? The one who dies with the most posts wins?
  6. I think I was at that game last year - high pop-up that 3 fielders watch land about 10 feet away from home plate in fair territory. Most depressing moment I've ever had at a Twins game.
  7. People make decisions all the time based on factors other than who is the highest bidder. I chose my current position because I thought I could make a difference here and because they offered me enough, not because they offered me the most (they didn't). I guess I don't call that foolish. For somebody like Greinke who is set for money for life regardless, I can easily see him making decisions based on factors other than who is the highest bidder.
  8. Stew, I would be curious about how you got to be an official scorer - is it like umpiring where there are schools and you work your way up through the minors? Also, what kind of training/supervision does MLB provide? I'm not thinking about going into this, but I would be interested to know more about that side of the profession.
  9. Shame on you for reminding people of what they said last year on this topic. Now watch...Liriano will go on a tear for about 6 weeks this summer and be lights out, and many of the same people will be blaming the FO for letting him get away. Then he'll fade away in late summer, as is his custom, and it will all be forgotten again.
  10. I agree. That's why I couldn't believe the amount of ink wasted last year when people were saying Ryan didn't get enough for Liriano and that we had squandered a 'trade chip.'
  11. As you wish: This team isn't handing out contracts without doing even simple research. Glad I could help.
  12. Very interesting. Like all stats, of course, it has to be taken inside a larger context. According to fangraphs, Scherzer had a WPA last night of 0.88; Smyly had one of .193. Yet somehow I still think Scherzer added more to the Tigers win than Smyly. It also gives Pelfrey the lion's share of responsibility for the defeat, yet there were plenty of key Twins bats that were completely silent and could have made a significant difference.
  13. Was it a bad decision? In hindsight yes, but I can't pin this loss all on Gardenhire, let alone have it be the basis for his dismissal. Let's give credit here where credit is due, and assign blame fairly. This wasn't a Gardenhire loss - it was a Scherzer win, helped by the Twins lineup going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. And is a 3-run homer by Fielder really so surprising? The guy is going to get his dingers regardless of who is pitching.
  14. Kyle didn't get as much time in the lineup as previous weeks, with Koch taking a larger role. On Monday he went 2 for 4, and Friday he was 0 for 4. He also came in as a late sub on Saturday when Koch was pulled for a pinch-runner, and did manage to get a walk in his lone plate appearance that game. All in all a quiet week, but overall he has still had a fine season, hitting .400/.481/.578 and still second on the team in OPS, just behind Sano.
  15. I'm glad that approach worked for you, and I am not necessarily jumping to Gardenhire's defense, but just two thoughts: 1) We have no info as to whether this is something they've already worked with him on behind the scenes to get him to improve, and for whatever reason he just hasn't responded. If there is some concern about his work ethic (just speculation) and he hasn't responded to coaching, pointing that out to the press when asked about it is not completely out of line. 2) I'm guessing you weren't being paid half a mil per season to play - for that kind of cash, the tolerance for lack of improvement is understandably less.
  16. It's interesting to feel the vibe in TwinsTown these days. On the one hand, there is relief that they're not the Houston Astros. But there still is the fear of impending doom, because we all know it can't last, right...? They may indeed revert to the form of a 70-win team instead of a .500 ballclub, but then again why are so many so sure that it is inevitable? How far into the season do we have to be before we are willing to admit that this might be a decent (not good, not bad, but decent) year? I'm not sure myself.
  17. So, Plouffe has sat the last two games...and the Twins have won the last two games. I think I'll let Gardy have some leeway on this one.
  18. Jeremy Nygaard does a good job keeping track of it; check out the "roster & payroll" link on the top of the page, and keep an eye on the minor league forums. Outside of TD, you can check each leagues' (International,Eastern, etc) website and look up all league transactions - that's sometimes a couple days behind but does get most of the transactions. Also, Baseball America's website has a list of minor league transactions once a week, although it's usually about a week behind the times. Sometimes you get info from twitter feeds for the farm clubs. Bottom line - you just have to dig for it. And even then, Seth will probably get it first.
  19. I don't think anybody expected him to be great, and I certainly expect some regression to his historical numbers. That being said, there was a lot of negative ink here in the offseason predicting he would be worse than Marquis, and it certainly did feel like there were some who were eagerly anticipating an April meltdown so they could say "we told you so" and lambast the front office again. Personally, I would be happy for him just to keep us competitive more often than not, and give the offense a chance to win (if they ever decide to start hitting again). If he can keep it so we're not hopelessly behind by the third inning, I'll be happy and think he was a worthwhile acquisition.
  20. I noticed that the Seattle Mariners have brought back Bat Night, when kids 14 & under get a full-sized Louisville slugger. It brought back fond memories of the few bat giveaways I went to at Met Stadium back in the 60s and 70s. I remember sitting there in the stands and every so often, when we needed a big hit, all the kids started pounding their bats on the concrete steps, in unison. The sound was awesome. There still were a couple of those bats sitting in mom's garage last year when we cleaned it out. Anybody else have a fond memory of bat day? Now that we have outdoor baseball again, wouldn't it be nice to bring that back?
  21. I remember the debate about outdoor games back in the seventies, and the question about whether we should have sideline heaters. Bud Grant said it best: "Baseball is meant to be played in the conditions that exist." Oh, wait...
  22. It doesn't bother me at all that Anderson wasn't familiar with WAR. I'm not a big fan of WAR in general, and especially for pitchers, as there isn't any standard definition of how it is calculated. Comparing pitcher's WAR on fangraphs with those on baseball reference (Worley, for example) shows how useless the stat is, absent that definition.
  23. I guess we must have read different articles - I didn't get that feel.
  24. I'm going to give the Twins FO the benefit of the doubt on this one. Is it frustrating when things like this happen and we're left wondering if it could/should have played out differently? Of course. But the bottom line is we don't know what went on behind the scenes, what internal discussions were held (and which never got reported, nor should they be, to the media), and what medical opinions were presented. I also think it is impossible to evaluate the Twins performance in this area without comparing it to other franchises - you can't just look at this franchise in a vacuum and say "The medical staff doesn't know what they're doing" and have it be a credible statement. I remember driving through New York last year and listening to a local sports station ripping the Yankees medical staff, for many of the same complaints I hear in regard to the Twins medical staff. Is it possible that both staffs are incompetent? Sure. It's also possible that both staffs are on par with what is the industry standard, given the inherently uncertain nature of medicine and the fact that each person's body reacts and heals slightly differently, even to the same injury.
