  1. I guess the big question is if adopting this approach earlier would have avoided trouble or not. Even pitchers who pass this screening are going to have injuries. In any case, I'm glad they're doing it now. Early adopter, late adopter, whatever, as long as they're doing it.
  2. Yes - but if he gets drafted again next year he's in the same boat. He will only be a free agent after a draft passes in which he is not selected. That means 40 rounds each year. My guess is it will be a few years before he can do that. There will always be some team willing to throw away a round 30 pick just on the off-chance he's ready to commit.
  3. I actually approach this question a little differently than most people - I'm always a little hesitant to get my hopes up too much based on Single-A results. I've seen those flame out and die in the high minors too often. My approach combines raw potential with actually being closer to making a difference at the parent club. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Sano can do in New Britain. Right now, though, I'm more interested in following Alex Meyer and Kyle Gibson.
  4. So is there a record for longest thread? Can we set it here? If so, that in itself makes the whole Benson move worthwhile.
  5. Unless you have inside knowledge, you have no idea whether Appel would have taken #2 money or not. And in your "worst case" scenario you forgot to mention that the pick would be wasted, meaning not only no Buxton but the additional money made available to help sign other picks (because Buxton was underslot) also would have vanished. I think they made the right choice.
  6. Do you know anybody in their right mind who DOES want to go to Detroit?
  7. Wasn't there a similar case a few years ago of a player trying that, and having it backfire on him? At least back then, once you were drafted, you couldn't be a free agent until after the next draft was held - and if you got drafted again the new team had your rights. Has that changed with the new CBA? edit: I found the player I was thinking about - Matt Harrington, who was drafted in 5 consecutive years (2000-2004) but ended up not signing for any of them. He played indy ball and finally, after not being drafted in 2005, he signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in late 2006, only to be released before the 2007 season started.
  8. I'm sure that Beverly Hills is exactly like Grand Forks - just with a 0 added to every price tag.
  9. It's up to MLBPA to decide what their mission is. Remember, most of these rules have been negotiated with the MLBPA and were enacted with their approval. This could be an area that they just don't have a strong feeling about, one that they were willing to sacrifice in order to get an agreement with ownership. I'm not going to second guess them on what they were willing to accept.
  10. I would be open to a rule change like this. That being said, I still think Burnett's situation (and all those like him) is due more to marginal talent than to a broken system.
  11. So basically you want to finish the year with a realistic hope, based on observable data, that the future is going to be brighter and that the improvements are going to be sustainable. I have no problem with that.
  12. How is Burnett the loser in all this? If he were a better player, wouldn't he have stuck with one of those teams? Wherever you set the bar, there are always going to be some players who are just at that level - sometimes they can clear it, sometimes they can't. That doesn't mean the system is broken; it means that in MLB you don't give participation trophies - you have to be good enough to make a club want to keep you.
  13. Careful...for some here those are fighting words.
  14. I guess we'll find out at the end of the year. Let me just ask one question: If, at the end of the year, the Twins have won 75 games (as they are on pace to do), how will you feel? Will you be happy that they have shown improvement in the one category that ultimately matters (W-L)? Or will you be upset that they didn't tank completely and force the organization to adopt a more radical change in approach? Or will it be some combination of both?
  15. It was not the point of my post to prove that your opinions were wrong and mine were right, although I still think this move doesn't deserve the level of scorn you have given it, whether or not it would have been my choice. It was to point out that opinions are opinions, and facts are facts, and just because you hold a particular opinion very, very strongly doesn't mean that it is a fact and that everybody else is wrong if they don't see it as such, which seemed to be what your post implied. If I misinterpreted your post, I apologize.
  16. This is actually true of all statistics, including WHIP, K/9, K/BB, WAR, xFIP, whatever.
  17. To be fair, he says right up front at the start of the article that the starting pitching is still brutal. The title of the article refers to other areas where he does see improvement, in each case I think justifiably. I concur that we are not going to be contending in September, so "meaningful" is a stretch. Personally I'd be happy hovering at or slightly under .500, which is still entirely possible.
  18. It is often said that the largest gap in the system, in terms of difficulty, is the gap from high-A to Double-A. Kyle's numbers this week indicate that that is not without validity. Kyle played three games last week after being promoted to New Britain and showed that he will need to adjust to a higher caliber of play, going 1-for-9 for the week, with his lone RBI coming from a sac fly in Wednesday's game. His overall numbers are still good (.333/.402/.444) but we will be hoping that Kyle can adjust and figure out Double-AA pitching quickly.
  19. And you've illustrated the same thing by using as your basepoint a Twins record following a period of small sample size under-performance (10 game losing streak). Recall that before that streak they were above .500, including a decent road trip that included Boston and Detroit. Bottom line is that the Twins don't suck this year. They're not a good team, and there are clearly areas which need to be addressed in the off-season, but they are a better team than last year, which is what the whole point of this article is and which deserves to be recognized and given credit.
  20. You mean in the stands behind center field, right? Although, I could be up for putting some maple and oak trees in center field. There could be pine trees in right and rose bushes in left. We can line the basepaths with petunias.
  21. Which is about the most depressing thing I've read today.
  22. My bad - I misread the Baseball-reference page. But the rest of the parallel could hold - A & A+ this year, AA next year with a late season call-up, and AAA/majors in 2015.
  23. If he's ready, great, but I also see 2015 (or a september 2014 callup) as more likely, and more realistic. And for those who would say that would be holding him back, that's the timetable Mike Trout was on, and that seems to have worked OK. In fact, Trout spent his entire first full-season at low-A, which is something I don't see happening for Buxton.
  24. Sometimes people are critical of Gardenhire because there is a legitimate decision/move/quote over which it is reasonable to be critical and which deserves the light of public scrutiny. Sometimes people are critical of Gardenhire because they've already made a decision that he should no longer be the manager and thus they approach every situation looking for a reason on which to hit him - and when you have that mindset you can ALWAYS find something about which to be critical. The problem is when it becomes a "boy cried wolf" syndrome - too much of the second takes away from the legitimate discussion of the first.
