  1. I agree on your trade targets, they need 2 of 3 for this to make any sense. But I agree with Dave on Sano. While I would love to see him work out at 3rd, based on his play and performance eval thus far, the chances of him sticking at 3rd are probably 1/3. If and when he's ready, they will make room for him at 1st or OF. Also, don't discount Rosario as a contributor sooner rather than later, he would make for a good MI 2B combined with a very strong defensive SS possibly acquired in this trade with the Rangers.
  2. Good point on the health risks. Regarding healthy arms, the Twins have their hands full already in injured-winged throwers, with a poor record at maintaining their health or returning them to previous form. I'd say pass on Pelfrey.
  3. Bingo on Bedard! Between him and Correia, he's definttely the better pitcher- and they can still sign him today for less money than Correia, probably a one-year deal with a team option. He pitched into some bad luck last year, after starting out great for the Bucs, that's the kind of low-risk deal the club should have made last year- and still can now.
  4. It's an unwritten NFL rule that mediocre punters should be seen and not heard. Branding 101: Defiling the NFL brand name trumps any DWI arrest, manslaughter or murder/suicide incident.
  5. Close to a wash, but this number stands out: Lannan GB% 53/FB% 27 Correia GB% 44/FB% 36 (2012 #s nothwithstanding) So the Twins traded their 2 best defensive OFers and offset that by getting the 33%-more of a flyball-prone FA starting pitcher AND paid alot more in guaranteed money besides? They must REALLY hate Lannan to not have gotten him in as a throw-in in the Span deal.
  6. Sano is going to end up at 1st and Plouffe is a defensive liability wherever he plays- he has future DH written all over himself. Why is no one suggesting Mauer to move to 3rd for the remainder of his career (with Plouffe as a RH platoon bat at the position), as catching becomes more PT and problematic for Mauer over age 30? Trading your top two power hitters for one unproven, albeit legit prospect- but remember- only AA-experienced minor league corner guy is madness (Olt had a very high, Sano-like, K% at AA and Texas (33%) this year) and doesn't address the long-term crying needs of the Twins--- those being SP and MI. In order for the Twins to dig themselves out of this hole, they must use their primary trading chips to adress their critical needs, they must get Perez in any kind of trade with Texas and something else in the MI (Profar/Andrus) and perhaps give up a top OF prospect in their area of surplus to make sure it gets the deal done. As others have noted, including me, Texas is reeling from the loss of the fan-favorite defectees and are desperate to keep pace with all the improvements made by teams in their division. They may be as willing a trade partner in need of a big splash as they have ever been in the history of their franchise right now.
  7. Of course a team in as desperate a situation as the Twins should kick the tires. I'm not against it at all and will congratulate Ryan on his acumen if ti works out at all. It still doesn't change the fact that the Twins are desperate and apparently unwilling/unable to follow through with other strategies involving signings that would result in more predictable and possibly more beneficial outcomes that necessarily involve spending more money to seek a higher rate of return on that money. Funny, that no one is adressing that particular aspect of risk/reward ratio?
  8. Zumaya was one season out of baseball, not four, like Webb. It cost Ryan approximately $.5M to find out in 13 BP pitches in March of 2011 that Zumaya didn't have it, as he hurt his arm once again. Cost of doing business, but that cost and the Marquis $3M debacle dollars could have been used towards signing one of the numerous FAs SPs for just a little bit more, a far greater signing value- with a much higher chance for flipping at the deadline. Quality, people, not quantity. Again, Vargas was placed on waivers in late August and Ryan wouldn't budge. (Actually quality AND quantity is the proper way out of this, but that apparently is too expensive a strategy for the Twins' tastes) Webb's prospect for a comeback is infinitely lower than the Zumaya infinitesimal "lottery ticket" chance of success. Sure the Twins should look at every option, and it would likely be the top Twins story of 2013 if Webb could come back above a shadow of his old self. It's one thing to take a calculated risk to sign a Burton to pitch out of the pen, but this is grasping at soggy straws in order to somehow find a way to fill out the Starting Rotation on the cheap, this is just a cut-rate version of Ponson y Hernandez wheel-spinning, trying to re-capture lightning-in-a-bottle-redux, and we all know it. Many have commented that this signing would be fine, as long as there is a Plan B. Unfortunately, we all know that "Plan B" is what you saw in 2012. Get ready for more of the Killer "D"-squad (DeVries, Duensing, Deduno) to come to the rescue, yet again.
  9. Has it really come to this? (I hear TR is secretly bringing in Roy Hobbs on a minor league deal to inevitably play RF, too). It's Doogie, so take it FWIW The Scoops: Wolves may be interested as Cavs shop Anderson Varejao | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Timberwolves: • The Twins will be among the teams at free agent pitcher Brandon Webb's throwing session after the holidays. A former Cy Young winner, he hasn't thrown a major league pitch since 2009 because of shoulder issues. Technically, he hasn't pitched ML-ball since 2008, so at least he's had little arm wear- over the last 4 years- heck, in pitcher's years, it's like getting a 20-something, dominant-in-command innings-eating SP coming off a Cy Young year. Maybe both he and Joel Zumaya are the double-secret-probation one-two punch of 2013- Ace Starter/Ace Closer- that the birdwatcher knew all along were still up Ryan's sleeve.
  10. It doesn't matter to the Twins ( this is self-evident by looking at what they do, not what they say) or they would be willing to do the things that other clubs are doing to improve themselves right now.
  11. He has very decent in-demand value. He could possibly get you one of those pitchers, not for 2013, but for down the road when it really matters.
  12. I still think they should have claimed Jason Vargas last August and probably gotten him, at worst, for a B level hitting prospect. He's still cheap ($4.85M in 2012 and going into arb, but would sure look a heck of a lot better in that rotation than Correia, and be far, far cheaper than what it's going to cost now to get one of the mid-level remaining FA SPs.
  13. Wait! You mean St Peter and St Antony don't do that for you? This is looking more and more like a year to revive: " The MN Twins...Get to Know 'Em (before we trade 'em, cut 'em or demote 'em)!"
  14. Agreed on your prospects, but the Rangers are reeling right now and their desperation might tempt them to make a move more beneficial to the Twins. Wouldn't Andrus net the Twins a small fortune in talent from a team desperate for a SS at the deadline, as well (and unlike the risk involved in Justin's injury history and last year on his contract, Andrus' value is virtually assured for the next year-and-a-half)?
  15. TR was just glibly metaphorizing on Purses 'n Ears mixed in with Silk and Purses..... this is what some on this board call Ryan's refreshing tell-it-like-it-is honesty.
  16. I'm choosing to take the optimist's tack on this trade and hope that Ryan forsees the Maholm flip of 2012 in Kevin Correia in 2013.
  17. Haven't the Rangers been looking to move Elvis Andrus? 2 years of cheap control, eminently flippable.
  18. Anyone yet skimmed the 2014 draft projections? What with the improvements being made by most of the Twins competition for the No. 1 pick, there's a strong argument that this might be the most productive use of Twins fans' time in 2013.
  19. $85M prediction nearly got me tarred and feathered. I'm already rethinking my prediction needs to go lower. When Jim Crikket and the birdwatcher end up engaging in some mutual Twins ripping, I'll know when to recalibrate my final guess.
  20. I've been a strong advocate for flipping as the best way to rebuild for years, the Twins are missing multiple opportunities over the last two seasons and this off-season to do as much.
  21. It's a sad state of affairs when the thought of acquiring Saunders is in reality the best move they have left in their quiver. The cold reality is they could easily have a rotation including both Saunders and Hendirks. Combined with Diamond, Correia and Whorley. There's still no guarantee from the club that Gibson is in from Day One. Given the fact that they are punting on 2013 (is there anyone still left arguing otherwise?), there is an argument to be made to bring Gibson back slowly, possibly with a June call-up or relief duty, regradless, they have already strongly voiced favoring limiting of his innings, so why not a start in the bullpen or in Rochester?
  22. There's good reason Shakespeare's quote, "Past is Prologue", has remained embedded in the English language. For evidence of the next hire, look at the 2 previous hires. This is how it is most likely to happen, a former journeyman, brief-playing member of the Twins, who began his coaching career in the Twins minor league system, working his way to the big club. Kelly came in in 1986 at age 36 and Gardenhire came in in 2002 at age 44. Even Ray Miller, Pohlad's first newly-hired manager, fits most of the description. Journeyman minor league player, hired at age 40. The Twins would seem to want and need to hire a guy who is much closer in age to the kiddie corp which is about to be hitting the big league club en masse in 2014-15. Now start lining up the suspect list, it isn't too extensive. Mike Redmond would fit the bill perfectly (age 41).
  23. What's for sure in my mind is that this is a Bay of Fundy-Tide-level set-up. Gone by All-Star break.
