  1. Would have liked to see them move on Mickey Storey (Ryan asleep at the wheel again), but here's a possible consolation prize. Saux just DFAd him to make room for Ryan Dempster. Beato is 26YO, 6'4"/220#s. RHRP with low 90s FB/90 MPH sinker, up to 96 MPH speed on the FB. Arb eligible 2015, Former Rule 5 pick. Team control until 2017, likely available barely above the minimum. High K rate and decent WHIP. Gotta be better in the BP than some of the current options such as Waldrop or Swarzak or another Gray-like signing like last year, and insurance if Roenicke/Fien/Burton falter. And this team is going to need plenty of BP depth given the precarious SP situation with the bevy of #5 level starters destined to make up the rotation.
  2. Some have thrown in the towel, others have "moved on" to raise the volume level of their attack on the realists who told them so previously.
  3. Who exactly is this growth-stunting guy, Freddie Garza?
  4. That's going to be the mantra for 2013 and a hard one to live down by those who wrote as such or those that thrive in the Ryan-Worship set..... because....see..."GMing is hard!"...... (although I think Ryan-worshippers are finally coming around to having their eyes opened).
  5. Correia 171 IP in 32 Games Played. That works out to 5.34 innings per appearance. At an average salary of $5M, that's $156,250/gm played. DeVries averaged 5.12 innings per appearance and he obviously makes less than 1/10 of Correia for similar numbers (3 Correia games pitched=DeVries entire season salary). For the record, if you carefully read my post, I made no mention of "upside" for Duensing or DeVries. On the other hand, I don't think anyone argues that Hendriks can't be a lot better than Correia, and Deduno has the electric stuff that Correia could only dream about, not saying he will ever get there, but at least his Dominican performance and occasional strong start last year suggests he could catch lightining in a bottle for a couple of years- all for the League Minimum. I am mostly arguing the economics of this signing and I don't see how this was money well spent.
  6. Cmon, there's at least some evidence in the Twins reluctance to spend that there is at least a minor causal link in the Twins not wanting to spend what it takes based on the commitment and resulting circumstances to Mauer. I still think the Twins are still in psychological recovery of the Gobsmacking they got from Mauer's disastrous season and all the other injuries they incurred in 2011, which carried over to the high-dollar SPs in 2012.
  7. Hopefully, with the warming up to Boras, Appel is their prime target in the draft in 2013. I ask again, who has the names of the top 3 projected picks in 2014?, 'cause that's where the Twins are likely to slot. 2 major league-ready draftable SPs on the 40-man roster going into 2015 is about the best thing to be hopefully optimistic about.
  8. If anything, the level of uncertainty has been significantly raised over last season- and signing Freddy Garcia would only raise the certainty of one more guy on the staff at or near the top of the gopher ball leader board. (Freddy's #s were around the top 5 for both HR/9 and HR/FB).
  9. How much marginal improvement are you really getting for your $10M commitment? Correia (NL Numbers) IP-171...K/9-4.68...BB/9-2.42...FIP-4.43...WAR-0.9 DeVries (AL Numbers) IP-87...K/9-5.95...BB/9-1.85...FIP-4.90...WAR-0.4 Deunsing (AL Numbers) IP-109...K/9-5.70...BB/9-2.23...FIP-3.82...WAR-1.3 Hendriks (AL Numbers) IP-85 (+106AAA)...K/9-5.27...BB/9-2.74...FIP-5.57...WAR--0.2 (AAA): IP-106...K/9-6.94...BB/9-2.37...ERA-2.20
  10. Uh, the Twins had numerous options who pitched "below average" last year who were playing for the minimum, as a group, they are only marginally worse than Correia, and guys like Hendriks, and even Deduno, have significantly more upside than Correia to be significantly improved in 2013 over their 2012 numbers. I would also remonstrate through past stats and projections that Deunsing, and even possibly Cole DeVries, brought more value to their pitching staff than Correia did in 2012 and have a chance to contribute at a level at least at what Correia offers in 2013 for only 10% on the dollar.
  11. Pavlovian defensive response? You're not slipping.
  12. Hey Seth! Did you notice that Samuel Deduno got the win against Sano's team that night? He went 6IP/4H/1BB/9K. For the season he's pitched in 5 games, 20 Innings, 26Ks/9BBs...and get this.....0.00 ERA. If you can get a report or know if he's pitching in the WBC, it would be much appreciated! Sano's numbers after a small sample of 18 games are nearly ridiculous: 317/431/683/1114 Edit: Mea culpa, I just saw your article. Still, what's the buzz on Deduno offseason, going into next season?
  13. Miguel seems to definitely like him some home-cooking. Sure, he's approaching Delmon-like girth now, but he's only 19. At this rate he's on pace to be the next Big Papi or Prince Fielder. Doesn't look good long-term for him playing much 3B in the majors. Hopefully, TR has a nutritionist on call in Fort Meyers.
  14. I sense a pattern here. Nick seems to get his dual roles as a Twins fan and a baseball analyst faultily conflated, at times. The only consistent thing that stands out about this signing is the recent pattern of warming up to Boras clients, conceivably Ryan is offering his services as a bridge contractor of Boras clients looking for a holding spot while waiting for a bigger payday down the road. Perhaps there is hope for some more Boras guys to get parked here short -term- Jurrjens, Lohse or....gulp.....Bourn?..... or take one of the above as tit-for-tat on signing the likes of Boras' lower-end stable of guys like Derek Lowe or Johnny Damon?
  15. Hopefully, both Correia and Pelfrey perform well and are both gone by July for decent prospects, I hope Ryan is wise enough to realize that this is by far the soundest strategy, neither should be in the long-term plans (barring some miraculously unlikely dominating performance from Pelfrey). Hopefully the Twins remember how they disastrously extended soon-to-be worthless arms in the past (maybe not, they re-signed Capps just this last season).
  16. Desperate times call for desperate, but very fiscally conservative, measures. The crew that insisted that Ryan would spend upwards of $30M on FA pitching upgrades is eating a healthy load of crow right about now. Ryan is in the process of doing for the SP staff what he did for the RP staff in 2012, unfortunately, for every Jared Burton find, there are multiple Gray/Zumaya/Maloney signings. The days of Deduno, DeVries and Duensing may not be over quite yet.
  17. TJ surgery just last May? I haven't seen the numbers, but how many pitchers are effective 11 months out? Every case is different, but IIRC, Joe Nathan had his TJ in March of 2010 and had one good month of pitching results in all of 2011 (July ERA of 0.79)
  18. Is there any shred of evidence to suggest that Ryan would do what it takes to bring Marcum in to the fold? $5M tops for a FA SP is the "Twins Way". Brandon Webb returning to become a MLB replacement level starter? Those who believe in this scenario most likely attend The Divine Church of Rainbows and Unicorns.
  19. 4 of the 5 in the "Big 5" have middling-to-serious arm injury issues and history. Of the last 2, didn't Hernandez end the season on the DL?-- and Hendriks has the mental health issues related to a crisis in confidence to still overcome- so make that 6 of 7. The only conclusion to reach is that Ryan is trying out his new medical staff to see if they can hold the SP staff together longer than the 2012 MASH unit was capable of doing. *New betting stat for next season*? Guessing the over/under on the collective number of DL days for the 2013 pitching corps- Greater or Less Than 2012? * (For Amusement Purposes Only)
  20. Still sign Pelfrey Jurrjens and Marcum? An embarrassment of riches. Except they just flushed down the toilet alot of that money on Correia. Won't happen. If it did, I think the Twins could challenge the record for Most Days on the DL by one pitching staff.
  21. Delusions? The Rangers have depth at certain positions and glaring needs at others, use your imagination, a trade might involve a 3rd team in order to meet all their "MLB needs". As far as value goes, the WARs of Willingham and Andrus were about the same in 2012, and the Rangers have made it clear that Andrus is expendable. They need some splashy moves of their own just to show the fanbase that they are not taking their losses lying down. Willingham would be a major upgrade over Nelson Cruz (WAR 4 vs 1.3). And why does offering a top Twins prospect do nothing to close the value gap?
  22. Given recent personnel developments on their club and their chief competitors, the Rangers arguably aren't trading from the same position of strength.
  23. Andrus gets expensive right about the time when the only guy making anything over peanuts is Joe Mauer. The Twins can afford him at that point and could answer their SS needs for the next decade and a half- or they could flip him for a boatload of talent in the interim of his team-controlled years. He's a proven commodity at the most important field position. Unless your are certain that Olt is going to be a lock to provide a Beltre-type career, why not acquire the greater need with your best trading chips?
  24. Debatable point.
