  1. Nate Hanson back up or Jordan Parraz, hopefully causing a down-line domino effect of OF promotions? (Fingers crossed.)
  2. I think that SSS was my point- that in trying to draw meta-conclusions from mini-data samples- ie, incremental improvements over a couple months led to false optimism as late as June 25 last year- the definite incremental improvements outlined in this article this year will likely lead to the same false optimism- most of the underlying problems.... and the same problem-behavior-making players are still there. The one meta-conclusion we can draw is that the SP still "sucks", and many other data-based performance aspects still "suck" too---only worse than last year--which makes any meta-conclusion that the Twins will be playing relevant games in September---absurd.
  3. The number quoted was UZR, not UZR/150. Not a perfect measure by any means in the 2 month time frame, but far better than UZR/150. Hicks has improved, but he continues to misjudge balls- he just last week took a bad angle on one missed ball, had the ball hit his heel on another and then got completely turned around on another- going right and then turning completely back around to the left and then back in the direction he first started from. Clearly, he is capable of incredibly athletic plays, it's going to be a work in progress for him to more consistently make the more routine plays.
  4. You nailed it. "Very impressive" is right. The fact that he is a Boras client might scare away clubs above the Twins, I hope it doesn't scare the Twins away. If they can't get Gray or Appel, I think this is the guy.
  5. I think Hicks could still have taken over. Mastro was clearly hurting at the time, Borbon was still the better option as the 4th OF, even if Mastro had been 100%. The Twins appear to have zero interest in looking for upgrades outside the organization for position players. I would love this move, as well. I just don't see Ryan pulling the trigger. It is astounding at how thin the defensive OF depth has been allowed to become.
  6. I'm going to just politely say that this is a stretch, he clearly misjudged and/or muffed the plays that I saw.
  7. This is a logical, low-risk move. A year ago, with the Komatsu-type acquisitions, I think they would have pulled the trigger already. This year they have done virtually nothing to bolster the depth at obviously thin positions- CF Borbon was a logical "Trade for C- prospect" in April and the Twins sat on their hands, I'm guessing they keep them there throughout the regular season.
  8. Baby steps are a good thing. But, I think the premise was taken a bit too far. First off, the ugliest trend of all, Starting Pitching, is also the most critical change to making the team successful. And that trend is WORSE, not better. And then there's this: The same things were written as late as June 25th last year when the Twins were only 7.5 games out. "Buyer or Seller at the Deadline?" headlines were quite commonplace. As last year, that just is not realistic given the current Starting Rotation, lack of reliable SP depth, Gibson on an "almost-used-up-already" innings limit and a near-certainty that one or more of the current SP crew will have a break down of some kind. That, in turn, cascades over to the 'Pen, which will end up suffering statisically under the overuse issues and regression to the mean concerning the unsustainable HR/FB rate, same as it ever was.
  9. You've invited and illustrated the danger of drawing meaningful trends from small sample size over-performances. Just a week ago today, Sunday, the Twins were on pace to just about match last season's 66 total wins. But then, playing 7 games against 2 of the worst teams in baseball changes the whole outlook. Milwaukee is 7-22 since May 1, that's a .241 clip, by contrast, Miami is actually BETTER, 8-21 over the same period. Seattle is a little better than these 2, but the Twins were very fortunate to miss King Felix and draw 2 alleged SP guys who are hanging on by their fingernails just at staying in the league.
  10. The Twins just signed 2 career minor league OFers for New Britain. thus, setting up the domino effect?...Thomas to Twins...Hanson/Parraz to Roc....Morales to NB.....JD Williams/Buxton to FM....Kepler to CR....
  11. Nailed it, jd.
  12. Yep. A nice bat off the bench while his shoulder heals. The only other 40-man hitting option would be Pinto, I don't see them doing that.
  13. When did I say anything about his lack of arm strength Christy? I've seen everyone of his assists and commented on such throughout this season, at least half were due to him misjudging the ball in the first place and runners then challenging his arm, plus the cutoff man mishap that miraculously resulted in yet another "assist".
  14. Bryant does look the part of an elite draft pick, and he carries himself like a major leaguer already....BTW, that UCLA pitcher looks pretty good, too!
  15. Hey Seth! If it doesn end up being Clete going up to the Twins, doesn't it open up an OF spot that must be filled by New Britain...and then the domino effect kicks in...Morales to NB, Buck to Ft Myers, Kepler to Cedar Rapids...?
  16. Yep. Across the board, correct. Hicks is coming exactly as his career thus far indicated, perhaps with a little more power. The Twins are just being patient for him to "flip the switch", as he did last year at New Britain. It might not entirely get flipped until next year, but that's OK with the Twins, given the way the front office punted the offseason.
  17. What about his presence on "Not the Top Ten"?, he's had a few of those, too. From Prospect Pipeline: "Eventually, Hicks will have to start hitting much better than he is right now in order to keep his job. He is far behind the eight ball in the Rookie of the Year race, though the good news is that the AL crop hasn't been particularly strong so far this season. Somewhat surprising is just how bad Hicks' defense has been. He is regarded as a plus defender in center field with plus-plus arm strength and plus range, but his UZR is minus-3.9 already (UZR updated to -5.3 as of June 1- that ranks #18 out of 22 qualifed CFs). On the bright side, he has saved the Twins one defensive run thus far. (no doubt due to the inordinate number of rather lucky OF assists he has made)." If Hicks wins ROY, it might be by default, as much as anything.
  18. Nailed it. The Twins are back to their old habits. They are 13-20 against teams with a winning record for a W-L % of .394. They are 12-9 against teams with a losing record yielding a W-L% of .571. Going into the break, they play 20 games with teams with winning records, including 7 with the Yankees. They play 18 games with teams with losing records, including 7 with KC. Going by the current results, that works out to 43-49 at the All Star break- that seems optimistic to me. You both still might get your wishes, but the bullpen likely will wilt under the summer heat and all the innings pitched, it seems like a repeat of last year's unsustainability. It's time for the rookie phenoms & call-ups and the assorted current and 4-A fringe guys to step up, the salary dump is right around the corner.
  19. OK....If not him--- then who? Arcia would only have to PH. Pretty much no other position players available off the 40-man? How about going with the 4th catcher? He went deep again today- 9 HRs on the season.
  20. Are you sure he would clear? With 1B starting guys like Yuniesky Betancourt, Ike Davis and Greg Dobbs gracing big league rosters and playing regularly for major league clubs, someone might be intrigued enough to pull the trigger.
  21. He actually did say something to that effect. Gardy understands the situation, the club is going to protect their $10M investment, in the process continuing their marketing of their asset to the rest of baseball and painting the best picture of the situation. I hope they get a few decent offers for him in July and the Twins pull the trigger.
  22. A return to the 3-catcher lineup.
  23. This is not accurate. Trout was promoted to High A after 81 games at Cedar Rapids.
  24. There is nothing to indicate that Buxton would not be starting in CF when he's called up.
