  1. Walters, Ibarra and Tonkin are becoming a pitching juggernaut for the Red Wings. Escobar appears to have his swing back.
  2. Gotta give it more time, Bark. I fully agree with your visual sentiments that we're in full Twins Binge and Purge-atory at the moment, but Clete, Wilkin and the other suspects won't be around too much more in about 2 weeks.
  3. You hope what's good? 1) Elysium 2) Thai food 3) Twins game
  4. You are spot on. Boras originally wanted 5/$15 and ultimately settled for quite a bit less, 4/$12 just before the start of ST. Boras has previous history of getting the short-term money and coming back to the well again for the big dollar/years the next year. The openings for CF were closing fast once Span and Revere were gone. I think he would have jumped at a one-year number close to the $15M he wanted originally in December and January.
  5. Yes. And it also involves considering what actions Ryan will or won't take, in toto, in pursuit of that goal, hence my supposition at how he's likely to proceed. Looks like another bleak year, built yet again, pretty exclusively on hope and wishes.
  6. No question the number has grown, yet no one ever says "female nurse", do they?
  7. I'm sure this is lighthearted. Right?
  8. Have we already forgotten about the #35 prospect in all of baseball? 2013 Prospect Watch | MLB.com: News
  9. I would think that Ryan would try to do what he did last offseason and reach down for another high ceiling guy (although far less current tradeable options for that scenario to reach fruition- he'd have to throw in a legit prospect) and then hit the all-too-familiar bargain bin for a #5-#7 SP recycle option and one or two more injury reclamations. Re-signing Pelfrey follows past Ryan practices. Perhaps he throws in a variation gambit and signs a FA RP who would like to try converting to the rotation. Either way, it's going to be another long season.
  10. The applicants for the #5 starter role winds around the block......and......speaking of "block", that long line of applicants is currently being "blocked" by about seven #5s currently on the Twins SP depth chart.
  11. The one-year deal for Boras was an active option being considered publicly at the time. And Boras had precedent for pursuing such an option previously. Also Boras spent a lot of PR capital complaining about the current CBA restricting Bourn's FA options- I think there's an excellent chance at the time that Boras would have jumped if Ryan had made an offer. Many of us argued at the time that the Twins were in a very good position to sign Bourn, because of their poor record in 2012, it would not have cost them a first round pick in 2014, and they could have either made a deadline trade for Bourn in July for a fairly decent prospect (which is what "rebuilding" teams are supposed to do) or had him play out the season and made a QO in return for a possible additional Compensation Pick in 2014.
  12. The game isn't rigged at all. There is solid legal and scientific foundation dating from Medieval times and the Renaissance for the etymology of the phrase, "exception that proves the rule". The term "male nurse" applies perfectly in this particular case. The fact that you have to further clarify and identify a person in this particular job proves the "rule" that nursing is uber-inordinately a"female profession". And discussing baseball FA isn't anything like playing "Global Thermo-Nuclear War".
  13. Bye-bye Hermsen, Hello Sano. Issue resolved.
  14. Yup. Maddux was literally, a Control Freak (of nature). In his career, among his peers who pitched while he was active, he ranks 2nd among all SP in WAR (Clemens #1). His K/9 at 6.06 ranks 45th out of the 60 top WAR Starting Pitchers during that period of time. However, his BB/9 of 1.78 is #2 out of the top 60 (interestingly, only Brad Radke ranks higher) and his HR/9 of a minuscule 0.63 ranks him at #1 among SPs. The guy clearly threw the ball where and how he wanted to. Interestingly, Glavine ranks 9th in WAR during that 21 year period, and his K/9 ranks near the bottom of the top 60 SPs at only 5.32, and his control was much worse, his BB/9 is 3.06. I'm not sure what the moral of the story is, but Brad Radke ranks 16th in WAR over this time period and Kevin Tapani ranks 26th in WAR over the same period. Their K/9 rates are 5.39 and 5.89, respectively. The pinpoint control guys were out there in the 90s, and the Twins had 2 of the best. I'm assuming they're still out there today, can anyone explain why the Twins haven't acquired or developed anyone close to what Radke and Tapani brought to the table ever since they left the scene? Albers and Diamond flirt with that style, but so far nothing suggests they will have those types of careers. Major League Leaderboards » 2008 » Pitchers » Dashboard | FanGraphs Baseball
  15. is it because he has a better Batting Slash on the Twins than he has since he's been sent back to AAA?
  16. I think we can cut Gonsalves him some slack here. The Twitter world is filled with lots of much worse and ignorant commentary from many- and even adults who you think would know better are retracting stupid stuff all the time- and they're much older than a young kid 2 months away from graduating out of high school.
  17. Yup. TR could write a book or teach a college course on this area of GMing. (Kind of a limited market though for his tome, no #1 NY Times best seller list for a limited niche market, sub-specialty, how-to book).
  18. Agreed about those 2. Still have hopes for the 2 others, all 4 are 6'3", fitting the prototype a lot better than 5'10". I don't know about you, but I'll never get past the fact that, all other things being equal, the odds for success tip heavily towards taller rather than shorter pitchers. Still, there are always exceptions to the rule, this guy could be the one who has never read the articles about major red flags and height for starting pitchers. He's sure to be yet another guy to watch very closely both now and in Venezuelan winter ball- we might have another intriguing arm in High A in 2014 chomping at the bit.
  19. 4 pitches including a low-90s fastball. Everything looks good, but at 5'10", he seems destined for the pen. Not sure if you can rank him ahead of guys who still potentially project as starters. Still, this move smacks of the Dodgers feeling like they need to generate some goodwill around the League after disrupting the MLB natural order of things with their free-spending ways. (Still happy to give credit to Ryan for getting anything for a DFA candidate).

  21. Actually, he has been cited by many for growing power potential, his power grade has consistently been revised upward. He's also been compared to Willie Mays, who also grew into his full power potential. 2012 MLB Draft Prospects: Byron Buxton's Potential Outweighs the Risk | Bleacher Report
  22. Why would anyone doubt this? All one needs to do is look at the video that was posted and discussed on TD where he cruises into third base in about 10 seconds. (Bo Jackson was supposedly the fastest ever on a triple at around 11.5 seconds). http://twinsdaily.com/twins-minor-league-talk/6257-byron-buxton-trout-timeline-10.html
  23. Your glib humor is a major asset to TD, but in this case, there was fire to go along with this smoke concerning Bundy. But you're right, Rosario and a package isn't going to get him in July, they need major league ready bats. Meanwhile, Bundy's name was actively out there as the Orioles were looking at the possibilities of acquiring a young up and coming, cost-controlled bat in the last offseason, Wil Myers name was quite prominent in those discussions.
  24. Meyer with a less eventful 3 innings of rehab shutout ball- 2H, 2K, 2BB. It would be really nice, but probably too optimistic, that he gets the medical "all clear" to start next Monday night for New Britain on FSN.
