  1. I'm pumped for both sets of possibilities that you pose and want for the Twins to feel the fan pressure to avoid taking Half Measures when the time appears to be right to take Full Measures. I think the Twins have become fully acceptant that significant measures must be taken to wash away the bad taste of the last 3 years- and try to capitalize on trying to return to relevancy while their future HOFer can still produce (I learned that important "measures" principle from watching Mike Ehrmantraut:o):fenforcer:
  2. I mentioned it in passing and as a throwaway in a different thread, but would the Drew family be enticed to sign here in a Drew reunion scenario in Minnesota, with JD coming out of retirement and assuming the Jim Thome role?
  3. Drew or Hardy @ SS...Sign Michael Young (for cheap) or Morales to DH, Trade for Jason Castro to C. You instantly improve your positional OPS numbers at each position to the upper third in the league or better.
  4. How is it a "fact" that the Twins aren't going anywhere next year? More significant improvements are still doable and you might get your prime prospects producing by June 1. I think everyone was in complete agreement that the SP issue needed to be dealt with. Most fans have been calling for what TR finally did this offseason since he came out of retirement, and before then. The problem with you being right in line with Twins management is that they've been so wrong before in overestimating what their existing talent can actually deliver. At this point, the offense for 2014 looks to be even more anemic than 2013. The cost-benefit analysis in my book is dropping the team ERA for lets say, $40M/yr with the addition of Garza and subtraction of Correia, by, let's say one run/gm. means nothing but a shot at .500 if the GM stands pat with the bats and the offensive RPG drops by 0.5/gm. The money is most certainly available, the player is available (Drew or Hardy). Now throw in the what-if..... Sano and Meyer join the team by May-June and put up ROY-level numbers, you now have a fighting chance to get towards being a wild-card contender.
  5. Definitely wouldn't trade Hardy for a high prospect. But i would like to see them make a legitimate playoff run, should they crap out, they always would have the chance to recoup the prospect in a deadline trade or make a QO at season's end. The Orioles are looking for SP depth (a #4-5 and a #2 type), a LF, a DH and a closer. The Twins potentially line up here for a trade of major leaguers (Plouffe plus somebody below their 5 best pitching prospects...or Correia + lower prospect?)
  6. As long as they don't use the as-yet still-unnamed scout who gave the go-ahead on Nishi....then.... sure thing.
  7. The Orioles are shopping for major league talent, which the Twins could fill, making it a win-win deal. I'm all for Escobar in the platoon in place of Florimon, plus he could also fill the UTIL role- and he's only just-turned 25 (last Sunday), with a fighting chance to improve at least marginally with the bat, not 27 like Florimon is.
  8. I think the Boras factor has to come in play here, particularly for the Giants. If we recall, Boras stuck the Giants with the Zito contract. Houston and Miami? Not ready for FA primetime at this point. Are both Pitt and Toronto tapped out for expanding their payrolls. The Mets sound like they're playing possum in hopes of driving the price down a bit. One thing we know for sure, the Twins aren't anywhere close to being tapped out.
  9. It was both, depending on which day of the week it was, I'm sure they wish they could have that one back.....hopefully they've learned from the mistake.
  10. I don't see how a one or up to three-year $10M deal hurts the master plan for the long term. The days of the need for hoarding every nickel are over under the current business model, for both the franchise and the league.
  11. To be fair, Florimon is much better against lefties throughout his minor league career....758 OPS in MiLB vs LHP.
  12. 1) It's likely a Kirk Gibson-related issue. 2) The lack of interest can be directly pointed at the !st round pick compensation, the SS needs fulfilled and the cost-benefit analysis not being favorable to a non-contending team.....None of which apply to the Twins....
  13. I don't get your last remarks. What's not to like about Drew playing 120 games, virtually all against RHSP and OPS potentially above .850 ( career .876 OPS against RHP)? Eduardo Escobar has a career split of .739 against lefties (SSS) but confirmed his L over R minor league trend- Esbcoar could be your platoon partner and utility IF guy and you might be able to move Florimon for a prospect in Spring Training. If Flori stays, you would also improve Florimon's split by batting him primarily against lefties (.636 OPS). This kind of move gives you plus or plus-plus defense, and give you a combined OPS potential at SS (with Escobar) of close to, or better than, .800, the League Average OPS @ SS is only .669. The league best OPS at SS last year was the Red Sox with some guy named Stephen Drew getting the bulk of the ABs....HELLO!......765 OPS!!!! Well worth $10M, and Drew would draw huge interest as a trading chip, when and if that time should ever come about.
  14. I hope that Ryan has a viable Plan C for CF this year. Jonathan Mayo seems to value Presley's potential contribution to the 2014 Twins more realistically than the GM apparently does. He's right, while AP is a nice 4th OFer, the Twins appear to be coming up short yet again in CF to open the season. Based on how the season ended for Hicks, you gotta think he's going to have to spend 1-3 months in Roc. to prove himself.
  15. Christy, you said "simplistic", a more loaded term than "simple". I don't think anyone is saying that this is a simple exercise or decision. I think we're all aware of his medical history, right now there's a lot of jockeying from both sides trying to ink this deal. Garza's agent would be a fool not to ask for the sky with Tanaka still out there. All along I've preferred overpaying for 3 years with mutual options- in my book, that would be the proper course for risk mitigation.
  16. Yup. Mind boggling really, the failure to understand the upgrade Garza represents, particularly one of our own that got away once already.
  17. Wow. Why ever sign an upper tier player then- they could get hurt? And those who want Garza are thinking in the long-term, one of the best and affordable guys on the market who doesn't cost you a pick, and a chance to lock him up into the longer-term- assembling a rotation for the long-term should be a process and not a single offseason event- that's also managing risk. What I hear you saying is we're sure to be successful at mitigating risk by NOT signing better players and keeping a stable-full of below replacement guys? That seems like you prescribe that we remove all risk of ever regaining contender status any time soon.
  18. The time might be right during spring training or soon after the season starts, when an obvious or up-and-coming contender suddenly needs a reliable 5th starter. For example, not saying it will happen, but let's say Ryan Vogelsong fails to bounce back for the Giants, the GM who signed Correia originally is still there, and may feel comfortable with a guy who has put up better recent numbers and stays reasonably and reliably healthy at a bargain price.
  19. Interesting Jeremy Nygard-like article on Castro and pitch-framing. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jason-castro-on-catcher-framing/ A Stanford product who has taken a cerebral and "glutteal" approach to improving his framing numbers in 2013. I'd be on board. Big, lefty-hitting C balances out the position nicely. Projected to make $2.2M in 2014. Which prospect is an even-up trade? One of the thumpers (Walker, Vargas, Harrison)? I wouldn't want to give up much more than that, certainly not any of the top 5 pitching prospects.
  20. Agreed- the undue angst on disturbing the sacrosanct status quo is typical and somewhat comical. And teams successfully move SPs to RPs and back the other way all the time. Not every move like this ends up being Slowey-esque. Here's where we disagree....I would guess especially those with Pro-Ryan leanings were surprised how quickly the rotation could be upgraded. Most of us neutral or anti-status quo FO have been clamoring that upgrades in the rotation are not only doable, but affordable and necessary since post-2010.
  21. It's time for TD pundits to do some reporting. What are the odds on a 1-5 scale that the Twins are constantly being mentioned as never before such that they are legitimately still in on all of the mentioned potential starters and others you didn't mention? Isn't there a reasonably good argument that TR must have some back-pocket options on moving Correia should he be able to land an upgrade? The lost draft pick for Drew can be fairly easily recouped through trade for a legit prospect or making a QO when Drew's contract expires- the local scribes should enjoin the Twins from getting away with utilizing this "loss of a draft pick" canard....and simply shouldn't be accepted as a valid excuse for precluding such an obvious upgrade.... this is an unwillingness to spend available dollars while only taking on a little additional risk without blocking a deserving prospect. On a semi-serious note, could the Twins turn the tables on the Red Sox, and incentivize Boras and Steve Drew and make a joint pact with the brothers Drew.....by bringing JD back to the Twins Cities and out of retirement, in a Jim Thome-like role (career OPS+ 125 hitter and only 38)?
  22. So Boras lets him fall into our laps by Spring Training? Drew playing SS in 120 games primarily against RHP. keeps him healthy.... and OPSing near somewhere around .795-.870 with quality defense seems well worth $10M or a little more and the loss of a 2nd rd pick....
  23. Excellent 2nd post, brvama. We have multi-paged threads-worth of teeth-gnashing over "losing" the likes of Joe Benson and Alex Burnett. I'm firmly in the Howard Sinker camp- ie, a turnover of 2 dozen of the Twins 40-man at or below replacement-level rosterees is fully justifiable, by definition, after 3 season of embarrassing futility.
