  1. And Doogie Wolfson getting the "Scoop".
  2. Next Roster News? Terry Ryan continuing to work his $ix-figure $igning and Trading Magic.
  3. I don't think there's any doubt that Andrew Friedman built an organization that kept a pipeline going to give Maddon the pieces to work with, and that the timing for Maddon taking the Rays job originally was fortuitous. But Gunnarthor's point diminishing Maddon's career falls flat in the face of the evidence of his continued success versus the overwhelming perennial power and financial strength of the AL East relative to the rest of the league (2014 nothwithstanding). I think it's fair to say, there is plenty of evidence to justify why there is a consensus of baseball experts who consider Maddon the most respected manager in the game.
  4. You make it sound like this would be equivalent to adding a screened-in porch to your summer home... a Maddon hire would be earth-shaking to the Twins current culture.
  5. How much sway does Gene actually have with the Twins braintrust?
  6. You wrote much of what I was thinking- it was like I awakened to a potentially fleeting and repeating dream that somehow magically appeared possibly close to reality . But given that Maddon will be the Masahiro Tanaka of FA managers, I sadly and dejectedly doubt that Ryan is up to the task of getting this done.
  7. I have the same unhealthy feelings about him: 1) Shields is the #1, realistically signable option, by far, Santana a nice runner-up prize. 2) The Twins have horrible luck with NL pitchers, which leaves out guys like Gallardo and Volquez 3) Consider signing a one-year deal with team options to either Masterson or Floyd.
  8. The Twins are at 35 now on the 40-man, plus Pelfrey on the 60-day, including 3 pitchers that need to be replaced (Pino, Burton and Johnson). It's actually pretty easy to see- at the very least- 3 more guys who can easily be removed. From the position players, I'm thinking Colabello might now be more in a position to reconsider his reluctance to playing in the Far East- Ryan probably already has the deal set up for when he concurs. Nunez and Fryer could be gone. The Twins have to think long and hard on Duensing, Swarzak and Milone. perhaps looking to re-sign and then trade Milone in ST. Achter, Darnell, Thielbar and Pryor are also likely on the hot seat. Regardless, this should open up 6-8 spots, at the very least, which is great news.
  9. Given the timing, looks like they financed Burton's $200,000 buyout with this Johnson transaction.
  10. Burton's numbers fell in 2013 and collapsed across his entire pitching line in 2014. His velocity and pitch-by-pitch effectiveness dipped, as well. He finished off the season with a WAR of 0.0. He'll be fortunate to get a few around-the-minimum major league offers going into 2015. As when the Twins and Ryan strike gold with a FA mining from the gravel pile, the Twins need to look more thoughtfully to the option of trading those types, not extending them. (As in 2012, when they signed Burton, if they REALLY want a crafty veteran to bolster the pen, they can wait for the FA season to develop or the waiver wire to develop, to give them plenty of minimum or near-minimum options that offer potentially better results than sticking with Burton. As I've mentioned before, the Twins had two shots at claiming Todd Redmond in the spring of 2013. He's still only 29, making the minimum, and isn't even eligible for Arb until 2017. He pitched 75 solid innings of middle relief, with a WAR of 0.6, for the Jays in 2014, with overall numbers far superior to Burton. I'm sure there are probably at least a dozen guys who will be in Redmond's identical 2013 situation in this offseason, and probably a dozen more FA that could be signed for just a little more. Plus you have a bevy of Twins AA and AAA guys that need to get serious consideration for Burton's spot... Let's move on.)
  11. I was writing as you posted, I echo some of your thoughts.
  12. After reading this comment, I'm not sure which "side" in the current managerial-successor debate is the more cynical of the two at this key turning-point in Twins history. By contrast, I think there's a large contingent of Twins devotees who, like me, are pleased that our last-offseason prediction of Molitor as- the "inevitable-manager-in-waiting" and faithful-and-oh-so-safe-pick keeper of the "Twins Way" Flame- was not quickly whisked into fruition on the heels of Gardy's dismissal. While there's always going to be a fair share of grousing and second-guessing, I think I speak for many when I write that I appreciate Ryan's apparent recognition that a more public and thorough talent-hunt is exactly what this team needs- both as a palate-cleanser for the last 4 futile years, and for the apparent new-found self-awareness that some serious corporate soul-searching is in order. Even if the choice ends up being Molitor, the more candidates that are interviewed and more thought put into the process, the higher the yield on more fact-finding and self-due-diligence on making positive and necessary change from the current stale culture.
  13. I'm not sure either, but time will tell in AZ. LaRussa has assured himself a future appointment in Cooperstown after serving with three financially-challenged clubs that all put together distinctly different, but yet, still solid and successful strategies, that enabled them to compete with clubs that had all of the financial advantages. (He's already nailed down one of the guys that the Twins coveted for the manager's role).
  14. Hopefully, the PR Winter League isn't the source reason he's been repeatedly getting into trouble. I'd like to see the club keep closer tabs on Rosario in the offseason, it sure seems he's in a healthy, and undistracted, environment in Arizona.
  15. Yes, certainly those two.... are amongst a multitude of other "flails"... and gaping blind spots.... The right move two years ago would have been to put LaRussa in charge and let Ol' Scout focus solely on what he does best. The flailing also includes publicly gnashing his teeth about his own accountability and not bringing in better people at the middle management/executive level in various areas to shore up his own admitted shortcomings, demanding little from those at field level to shake up the 19th hole clubhouse atmosphere, and complaining repeatedly that he can't improve the team because no one wants to come to MN- hardly a very inspiring message and strategy for a snappy and succinct turnaround, as well as much hope for raised expectations for sustained success.
  16. And especially given his anemic offense... his defense isn't good enough to be a regular in the majors, either.
  17. Wait.... I thought with how respected Gardy was around the League, that he was going to be snapped up by another club the instant the Twins let him go?
  18. For a second there, I was certain you were talking about the Twins...
  19. That was then: http://aarongleeman.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/pohlad-ryan-st.peter_1.jpg This is now (or was this a photo of today's CDC hearing? Either way, the "fan reaction" behind the pictured trio is hilarious.... and is also about the same for both organizations): http://media.hotair.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/facepalm-triple.jpg
  20. In trouble? His career to this point looks very similar to Lil' Nicky Punto at the same age, and Punto has carved out a 14-year MLB career.
  21. Thanks for the images. "You had to be there" really says it all. Brought back some Saturday Early AM -in-October goosebumps. At the time, it was pratically an out-of-body experience for the average Twins fan... I mean, Morris was pitching a shutout into the 10th in Game 7 of the World Series. and then, in the aftermath, not fully grasping the significane of the epic moment in baseball history, I naively just assumed we'd have many more chances to second-guess our manager's post-season pitching change strategies in the nest 23 years. As far as Game 7s and SPs pitching into the extras and getting the complete game, this had only been successfully attempted by Christy Mathewson in 1912.... Morris and Kelly were truly treading into ground trodden only by legends.
  22. Technically, May only has 45 innings with the Twins so, there he is on the list. But I get your point- still May has a chance at becoming a mid-rotation starter, pretty valuable. By contrast, I am putting exactly zero stock in Rogers ever being a rotation mainstay.
  23. Yeah, don't get me wrong, the Twins are wasting their time if they're not going for a Shields-type, and no lower than a Hughes-potential-bounceback-type at the minimum.
  24. Great, and then you possibly have the still-all-too-real scenario of Sano not working out at 3B, and a utility guy playing out of position at 3B both before Sano gets here and after, if he fails, until.... when....? Just who is the next ACTUAL 3B option at the position in this outcome?
