  1. Allen got the highest endorsement possible from Terry Ryan: He didn't include Glynn's recommendation, specifically, but I'm sure Glynn was a factor.
  2. a) Definitely Definitely not c) Thank goodness for baby steps.... at least we now have two outside voices from the Rays now in the mix, and in a position to express themselves (plus Eddie, to a much lesser extent), please tell me that Vavra isn't now in a position to overrule them.
  3. Pretty soon Vavra's going to be borrowing some of those Chuck Norris meme-generators to make his very own: JOE VAVRA- "Henry Blanco and Terry Steinbach may have been available to coach our catchers, but I bet you didn't know who they looked to to develop their skillsets." Is there anything he can't do?
  4. Possibly this guy?:
  5. Four consecutive 90+-loss seasons should indicate that the country club full of guys that have been around for 10+ years needed a wholesale change in direction, notwithstanding individual coaching talents, this move is the opposite of that. I'm surprised that Molitor is going along with this, but if he is, I suppose there's a chance that he knows Vavra well enough to feel they can develop some synergies working together.
  6. But isn't this a "promotion", possibly involving a raise in pay? Two sons in the program seems to be the best reason thus far proffered for his retention.
  7. No Twins Daily law against Stream of Consciousness posts... I get what you're saying, and you and James are on to something...
  8. I've never been a fan of either, although I did like their willingness to pick up the ball whenever and however asked. The thing about Swarzak is, his velocity actually picked up on most of his pitches, and he added a slider for 11% of his pitches, and it ended up being his most effective offering, but his overall results weren't there. The average RPs BA is .238, K/9 is 8.46, while Swarzak had a BA of .286 and a K/9 of 4.92. And that's pitching mostly in low-leverage situations. It seems apparent that a change of scenery might be the best thing to keep his career moving forward.
  9. Those dumpster dives won't ever end as long as Terry's at the helm. It's part of his GM DNA.
  10. Trevor Plouffe PA 1569 BB 7.9% K 19.9 ISO .173 BABIP .284 Slash .249/.314/.422/.737 wOBA .322 wRC+ .103 Plouffe in 1933 PAs has hit 62 HRs which averages to 23 HRs per 600.
  11. Good fair post. The non-tender route in a week or so could reveal some interesting options. I also think the Rule 5 route should be fully explored. I've been touting 22-year old Delino Deshields as their #1 non-pitching target. He can patrol a lot of territory and he also could platoon with a LH bat, as well as being a late-inning pinch runner (stole over 100 bases in 2012). The Red Sox have a 7th excess OFer in Henry Ramos, Jim Callis likes him even more than Deshields: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/102323126/pipeline-perspectives-henry-ramos-jarlin-garcia-are-best-unprotected-prospects Nothing wrong in going young with a defensively sound player, especially when it costs you so very little to find out if you have something.
  12. There have to be some three-way trade possibilities out there, but regardless, something's going to have to give in an OFer or two being let go in Boston, LA, and probably St Louis.
  13. It sure didn't help. Pretty sad when you so horribly mis-evaluate a guy, both coming and going.
  14. Just these 6 potentially excess Red Sox OFers, plus the Dodgers and Cardinals own OF logjams, tells me the Twins aren't thoroughly thinking through all of the potential ways to bolster their own OF. With an excess of supply, the price on something decent can only go down as this offseason progresses. Is there a dictum written on the wall in the GMs office- "Whatever you do, don't trade a prospect!" ?
  15. I think you nailed it. And the sad results of those moves likely didn't help Gardy's cause at season's end.
  16. To be fair, Berardino is defending himself on Twitter by claiming he had two sources, one apparently might have been either the manager or coach of the KIA team (they and the team trained in Ft Myers with the Twins in ST). And he's had a pretty good record up until now. It also does sound a little like the KBO plays a little fast and loose with their bidding rules.
  17. Gene Glynn has had the Red Wings gig for the last three seasons, 2012-14.
  18. I start each day with this motto.... "Up, up and away"...or this one.... "to infinity and beyond..." It doesn't always work out that way... unfortunately, sometimes it ends up with- "there's going to be fines and suspensions!"
  19. He's flawed defensively, but overall he'd be a nice upgrade from where they stand now. He's a FA after 2015, so you wouldn't want to give up much in trade. I remembered how good he looked against the Twins, so I had to look it up- 6/14 with 3BB, 1K. 1 Triple, 1 HR. .429/.529/.786/1.315
  20. Who has said anything like this? No. One. No one has presumed anything. And you conveniently ignore the fact that this is not one lone tweet, it is, in fact, the second OF name being bandied about that would also be a defensive liability. We are only working with projected OF from the new names the Twins have supplied as possible additional options, to this point. And pointing out, in response to this news, that based on current data, neither would be desirable as a starter. Torii Hunter and Wily Mo Pena. Throwing Bourjos into the mix, with Arcia in RF, and one of the above might be something they're considering, but that might net out only to a tiny incremental improvement in the OF defense. Or they might be thinking of moving Plouffe to LF with Mauer to 3rd and Pena and Ortiz splitting the duties as 1st, which might also net a small improvement. But pointing out that inside sources are saying that the already-defensively challenged Twins defense are now bringing up 2 OF names that by themselves, and the current data, says they don't make the defense better, is the exact opposite of "completely bizarre." And the source on Pena is the opposite of some fever swamp, up-all-night, anonymous Twitter poster, but the very guy who has been the best reporter on Twins developments (he even has two inside sources on the Yang deal, one possibly a KIA manager):
  21. What a mess. And maybe a little skullduggery?
  22. One thing is definitely going to change, and that is, I'm sure we'll be seeing much more defensive shifting from Molitor, this should gel nicely with the Allen hiring, who has worked in an organization that has pioneered modern shifting strategies.
  23. Importing what level of hitters? Found this on YouTube. Yang strikes out former Twins AA farmhand from 2005, Luis Jiminez, who starred for the Latte Giants last season: <media>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiWVD97eKwE&list=PLfOZ_qv8ydNEoVIkQb0F9BODzX3CCkfZ3 </media> I really like the Yang pony-tail and disarming Harry Potter demeanor. Also, could the Twins make an offer to KIA on the play-by-play guy to replace Dick Bremer?
  24. The only thing I know about the KBO is Hyun-jin Ryu, and Yang is no Ryu. http://i.minus.com/iSEcqZ5bQrrbG.png Ryu LHP 6'2" 255 # KBO career: ERA 2.80 K/9 8.8 BB/9 2.7 WHIP 1.154 Yang LHP 6'0" 172# KBO career: ERA 4.33 K/9 7.7 BB/9 4.7 WHIP 1.503 Can Yang be a serviceable MLB pitcher? Absolutely. But there's definitely more than one reason that translates really well in the above numbers why the Twins won the bid. If KIA does follow through and accepts the low-ball bid, the expectations for his level of success just have to be properly calibrated.
