  1. But the Twins continue to circle back to the same pattern as last offseason. Bronson Arroyo was the same age but with better credentials and a higher price tag, and we know now that the Twins dodged a bullet (I was wrong, I thought Arroyo would have been a good risk @ 2/$16M, thankfully he signed for a whole lot more with Arizona) and how that one blew up in the D-Backs face. Vogelsong's track record suggests that his signing would entail more risk of performance failure, but at a slightly lower price tag.
  2. That is a good question, and this whole exercise will make a great thought experiment in light of the Donaldson trade. The Giants have 4 SP prospects on the brink of major league readiness, plus Crick. And they have the long-term answer for any club at the Catcher position, Andrew Susac (Shea obviously didn't mention him, but I suspect that both Susac and Crick would be the first guys that Ryan would ask for in return).
  3. I'm not sure that as a group we have done what you allege. Hunter's conduct at the interview has been pretty universally condemned on this forum, with good reason. And I, for one have made it clear from the outset, it's well-documented that I have been one of Berardino's greatest proponents from the day he started on the Twins beat. He seems to have more passion in doing in-depth reporting on the Twins than the entire Strib and ESPN 1500 stable of writers, combined. However, the month of November was a bad one for Berardino, he missed, or misreported multiple breaking stories, and IMO, he compounded that error with a line of questioning that was inappropriate for an introductory forum, he played the Gotcha card and used the prime purveyor of Gotcha journalism as his shield. And he may have foolishly poisoned his own well for generating future insights. Again, there's a time and a place for asking the harder questions, nothing to do with Us vs. Them.
  4. http://www.rantsports.com/mlb/files/2014/10/Plouffe-Brad-Rempel-USAT.jpg John Shea is the national baseball writer for the Chronicle. You see an article with a headline about the defending WS champs and what his #1 prediction is for keeping hope alive in the City by the Bay, Trevor Plouffe's name is somewhat surprising as the first one to spring into Shea's mind, not only that, he also sees Plouffe not so much as the guy to hold down the spot until something better is available, but as the anchor over the intermediate term: Shea acknowledges that the Twins might very well be inquiring on Vogelsong, but he doesn't stop there in assuming the Twins would still have a yawning need for more arms. He envisions that at the upcoming Winter Meetings, a tap on the shoulder proposal from Brian Sabean to a swap for need on Terry Ryan's part would be very amenable to the Twins GM:
  5. Pretty incredible that almost two years to the day after trading both major league center fielders, they still are flailing around for a warm body at a critical position at this level. I guess I can douse the small flame of hope I had for a trade for Bourjos, Jay or Fowler
  6. Well, Terry did say he was going to take a look at what was out there and add if he found something he liked. And give him some credit, he's trying to make certain that the Twins build up some CF futility depth so that they don't go through all of their "real" and fake CFers and end up calling up a SS to play the position Remember this guy that Ryan similarly took a shine to, except for batting left-handed, almost the identical MO and career arc?: Erik Jordan Komatsu Positions: Outfielder and Pinch Hitter Bats: Left, Throws: Left Height: 5' 10", Weight: 175 lb.
  7. It's dangerous to comment when you obviously haven't seen the entire press conference. You're just factually incorrect here, and might want to consider editing this post.
  8. He has a "history", to be sure... but the people being paid millions of dollars to make multi-million dollar decisions obviously disagree with your conclusion.
  9. Mentoring the AAAA guy on one end of the system and also mentoring his spitting image at the other end, Tanner English. It's clear we got the minor league version of Torii. I wonder if anyone has looked into his political views? http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/scar/sports/m-basebl/auto_headshot/9655956.jpeg TANNER ENGLISH Class: Junior Hometown: Murrells Inlet, S.C. 10. Mike Berardino is back to reporting about baseball matters. He reveals that Ryan Vogelsong's agent tells him that the Twins have inquired on the Giant RHSP. https://twitter.com/MikeBerardino/status/540519849227984896 He looks to have #5-level stuff in the AL, but his uptick in velocity in 2014 apparently helped him in a bounce-back year in San Francisco. He made $5M last season, so it's easy to see that the price would be in TR's wheelhouse, but why another low-end guy when the current roster is crawling with them? Thoughts?
  11. Have you checked his Twitter page? You do understand how journalists can inject controversial matter into a more conventional question, right? Wrong forum to play it cute.
  12. There aren't many. Harold Baines and Fred McGriff. Rafael Palmeiro too, but he has the steroid taint.
  13. Me too, but it would have taken more than Malone, and I don't think Ryan is ready to give up any of his prospect "pieces" yet.
  14. Uhh, he's been at this for 20 years and has succeeded at putting his foot in his mouth far more often than not, I think we all are aware of Torii's limitations at "adpetness"/"adeptitude" in this regard.
  15. I'm glad you shared your feelings here, Seth. IMO, it was well stated, and well worth your time in doing so. And I had forgotten that Torii had made that offhand remark ("this guy just ruined it"). Very telling. And for a guy that wears his heart on his sleeve, his reaction afterwards was predictable. Not to excuse it at all, but it was more of Torii being Torii- sometimes the guy forgets that he doesn't have an internal filter, and he yet again gets himself into trouble.
  16. Uhh, Torii won multiple man of the year media awards in his time here. I think you're forgetting that he was a media darling for being the Twins' colorful human quote machine.
  17. I don't see your evidence, as far as I know, no club has publicly stated that they weren't pursuing Hunter because of his beliefs. Hunter has been controversial for a long, long time, and it didn't stop major media market teams in Los Angeles and Detroit from ponying up literally, over $100 million to Hunter. The correct line of attack, in staying on baseball-related inquiry, if Berardino chose to pursue it further, was, "Did Torii come here only because other teams wouldn't give him $10.5M because they considered him washed up due to his age and a drop-off in defense." And oh yeah, those were addressed. Berardino's questions look like grandstanding after having a very bad week or two of reportorial Fails.
  18. Thankyou, 100% agreement. That's all many of us are asking for here.
  19. Many seem pretty sure about Hunter's motives.
  20. 1) Great, now we have yet another new set of "unwritten rules"... 2) And that's how almost all journalists used to do their jobs not all that long ago.
  21. Great post, Dutch. And that's my biggest gripe, too. I gag when either players or the press inject this kind of stuff into a "game", an escape from worries about work, the economy and the cheap-trick-gotchas of gutter politics and insipidly pedantic ideology.
  22. The very stance which was President Obama's identical stance up until May 10, 2012. Look, I don't have a dog in this hunt, my opinion is strictly libertarian- in that the state shouldn't have any say in the sanctioning or defining of any marriages, all matters of this level of import with regard to personal freedom should be based on the credo- "minimum government, maximum freedom". Unfortunately, this view is all too uncomfortable for both political spectrums. But it's the left in particular of late, that has led us to the point- in increasing areas of American life, a person risks sanction for exercising his or her freedom of speech, thought or belief- in this case, for the support of "traditional" marriage- but free expression has been frozen in many areas, it's called The Tyranny of the Majority. I believe those that hold each opposing viewpoint feel that it is they that hold the "moral high ground." (And again, that's not a hill I would ever to choose to climb, because it's a place that takes away personal liberty).
  23. Quite the opposite, I think everyone on here has stated that all baseball-related questions are/were fair game. This isn't about Torii's multiple gaffes, just about an inappropriate line of questioning at a "baseball topic" presser.
  24. I said it right after the presser- Isn't it likely that Terry Ryan wishes the State of Minnesota had a "lemon law" that applies to professional athletes?
