Would the Twins Make a Shakeup at Hitting Coach?
hitterscount replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was in favor with the Arraez trade, but it definitely left a hole at the top of the order. Kepler leading off is not the answer. I would say Taylor against lefties, makes contact and could steal a base... if they were a team that utilized that option. Buxton has led off before, although not my favorite option. Polanco against RHP? Do something. I think you have to move Correa down... until he hopefully turns it around. Polanco moving to second when not leading off, Buxton than Kirloff? What is currently being run out on a nightly basis isn't working. They are making mediocre to bad pitcher look like aces.... on a nightly basis. -
Would the Twins Make a Shakeup at Hitting Coach?
hitterscount replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who puts together the staff? Football and basketball coaches generally hire their own assistants/coaches, with the front office providing a budget and ultimately signing off on hires... but it falls on the head coach (in this case the manager). Is it different in baseball? Other than the starting pitching and the closer, the current product on the field is probably the most undisciplined team I have watched in 35 years. Last year's team, with all the injuries, were hitting better than this group. And it goes beyond hitting. Fielding errors, mental errors on the base paths, failing or refusing to advance runners into scoring positions, lack of clutch hitting, a struggling bullpen and some questionable usage... what else is there to be bad at? The lack of fundamental baseball at this level is inexcusable. The manager keeps running out the same 1-4 hitters, there is zero accountability or personal responsibility. I have to wonder what it's like in the clubhouse. Is everyone out for themselves and just swinging for the fences, is there any direction or expectations laid out by the manager. I am not sure it is a hitting coach issue... I think it might be a step or two above him. -
Padres 6, Twins 1: The Hits Just Keep Not Coming
hitterscount replied to Steven Trefz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is a slump broken with 1 hit? Miranda, Correa, Gallo, Vasquez, Taylor,,, really the whole team has been in a slump for the last 4-5 weeks. One hit in 20 AB's is not a slump breaker. Something is wrong with the team, whether it's chemistry or they just are this bad. Arraez wouldn't move the needle. What's really frustrating is the SP is top 5, but poor fundamental baseball and the inability to manufacture runs is killing them. Duran and Lopez should be well rested though. SD is a .500 team and has looked the part so far this year. This was a pathetic display of baseball to open a home series. As the weather finally starts heating up there will be plenty of great seats come early summer... i won't spend a cent to watch this lifeless team. Final rant.... Rocco should have been let go last year. It was time for a change when they overhauled the roster during the offseason and should have happened. Firing a manager this time of the year has been done before with mixed results, however, other than a few minor league call ups it is the only move that could jump start this train wreck.- 58 replies

Game Thread: Twins v Padres, 5/9 @ 6:40 CT
hitterscount replied to wsnydes's topic in Archived Game Threads
Just another embarrassing performance by the offense and defense wasting another quality start. Maybe Rocco should consider shuffling the batting order, not using Jax in high leverage situations, going a little small ball…. Something because this team is spiraling. Maybe Rocco needs to be sent packing. There needs to be a shakeup somewhere. -
Game Thread: Twins @ Guardians, 5/7 @ 12:40 CT
hitterscount replied to wsnydes's topic in Archived Game Threads
What does it take to shake up this team... relieving Rocco? I don't know, the answer.. but this is like the 4th time in ten days they are being no hit after 5 innings. Something needs to change... maybe it starts with sending down players that are not producing. The observation/comments on relying on the homerun are on the mark. Maybe bring back Gardenhire. -
Miranda has been a major disappointment. We are six weeks into the season and he has shown nothing at the plate. If you are not hitting you better play above average defense.... and that isn't happening either. Farmer at 3rd until either Lee or Lewis are ready to be called up. If and when that happens my vote would be to cut ties with Solano. He is a replica of Miranda, nothing offensively and a liability in the field. With the strong starting pitching we have been getting the least you can do is play solid defense. Miranda and Solano's defense have probably cost the team 2-3 wins so far.

Is Bailey Ober Sustainable?
hitterscount replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He should have been in the rotation out of spring training, where he outpitched Maeda. 18 IP, 16 K, 6W, 0.98 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, yeah he should stay... not that these stats are maintainable, but he has looked every bit the part when in the starting rotation the past two plus seasons. If he is going to get injured, it might as well be here. -
Not real worried about Correa either, yet. He has had some big AB's with RISP and isn't delivering. Gallo moving closer to .200 is not great, but he is taking some walks. Agree totally on Miranda.

If he has no issues with the wrist over the next few weeks and continues to be productive, they need to find room. The offense is really bad and could use someone that can make contact. There is room between Gallo, Kepler and Larnach, an injury isn't needed. None of those three are brining much to the plate. With Gallo's defensive versatility I would look to move one of the other two.

The K's are almost as frustrating as Kepler's, Gallo's, Miranda's and Correas batting averages. Throw in Taylor, Castro and Gordon, all of them hitting around .200. The BP that is starting to leak... Jax , Winder, Moran are unreliable. Really need Jax to get back on track. This is not the recipe for winning baseball. They are wasting some strong starting pitching... Ober and Lopez deserved better than ND's. The W was much needed, but they are lucky they got it today.

hitterscount replied to Steven Trefz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It would be interesting to see his winning % in 1 run and extra-inning games.... guessing it's around .400 . Take out the 7 games against KC and they are a sub .500 team. Tough stretch in the schedule lies ahead, we should know if they are true contenders in 3 weeks.- 45 replies

There is no doubt that Rocco was pulling pitchers too early last year, several pitchers flat out shared their frustration on this topic. I would think most pitchers want to get the opportunity to get the win and a quality start if their pitch count is in a spot that allows, and they are still effective. I didn't see yesterday's game, so I don't know how Lopez looked, but am guessing he appreciated the opportunity to secure a QS. After that was gone am a little surprised coming out to start the 7th.... but guessing it had something to do with Duran's availability, or lack of. Rocco has done a good job with the SP this year.

If they are serious about a Central title and maybe a playoff series win, which I assume that they are, Maeda either needs to be moved to the BP or released. Ober should have been the 5th starter coming out of spring training where he earned that spot. Maeda has looked bad all year. His velocity, movement and location has been terrible all year, and no sports an ERA 0f 9.00. I honestly would take Bundy or Archer over him. Solano's defense is really bad. He is lucky in not being charged with any errors, however he is not making the plays you expect at the big-league level, probably cost Maeda 2-3. runs alone today. Stepping back and looking at the schedule you have to be happy with 14 wins considering we have had some tough series against the Astros, Red Sox and Yankees twice. Get 3 of 4 this weekend and it will have been a great April.

Tuned back in to see Solano with more porous defense. Some decent D and an Ober start they probably get the sweep. Anyone know why Correa is out? -

Don't you think when he stated the goal was 130 games he meant starting in CF? He came out and said he is not a fan of being an everyday DH. -

The defense has been really bad... however, Maeda needs to go. There is nothing he has done this year that leads me to believe he can help the team in any way. If they are serious about contending, which I assume they are, they need to head to AAA and get Ober back into the rotation, where he should have been from day #1. No issues with sitting Polanco, but Buxton? He has the bat going again and he sits on the bench... why? He ihasn't p,layed one game in CF so rest management days seems absurd. -
Props to Rocco... using his two best relievers to close out a 4-run game and get the W. Thats great managing to get the W because there is no guarantee tomorrow.

I have seen what Jax and Thielbar are capable of... so far this season they are not close to Lopez and Duran. I am fine with mixing Lopez in the 7th if the matchup dictates, but Duran should be the everyday closer.

Backend BP dominance. If we go Lopez - Duran in game 1 of this series, we take two of three. If fresh, when holding the lead going into the 8th, this is how the BP should be used... you will win 90% of the time.

How is the back end of the bullpen depleted? Seriously... since last Thursday Duran has made two appearances, Jax and Lopez three each with neither pitching more than an inning or on back-to-back days. Pagan, Moran and Acala are struggling with ERA's anywhere from 4.5 to 7,9, but depleted is not accurate unless you mean several cannot be counted on in any meaningful situation. It's time to get back on track... Duran is one of my closers on my fantasy team and this losing streak is not good.

I have to disagree with you on this one. Duran should be the closer and Lopez the set-up guy... period.... until one of those two fail to perform. Duran and Lopez were well rested, zero excuse for not following that blueprint.

It's early... but things are not looking great at the moment. Cannot hit, poor bullpen performances, basic fundamental mistakes that are costing games and questionable managing decisions will lead to losing 5 out of the last 6. Why wasn't Lopez in to pitch the 8th? Rocco being Rocco. He is letting the SP go deeper, which is great,,, but overthinks how to use the BP and why I thought a change was warranted at the end of last year.

It is pretty bare at the higher levels... Lee is an obvious choice and Lewis when he comes back later and if he looks anything like he did last year. The we faced a lot of aces argument only goes so far. There will be many aces to face if they make the playoffs... need to score a few runs against them and hope our pitching holds. It is early and the concern meter is still fairly low.... this continues for another 3-4 weeks and it certainly goes up.
