  1. I'd put him 3, behind Sano and Buxton. The reason being is he is a pitcher with #1 stuff and I rank pitching slightly above position players. My guess is he will have the 3rd highest ranking maybe 4th in most top 100 list when it comes to Twins related prospects. I like Hicks and Arcia I just don't know where they'll be ranked in most top 100 list because they have been around a while, and many list are heavy with players in the past 2-3 years.
  2. BJ Hermsen is who is he is, he won't light up the radar gun, won't impress a bunch of scouts, but he knows how to pitch. The problem with that though is its hard to be successful without the best stuff. My guess is he becomes a long relief guy in the majors but I still think he has a future in the organization.
  3. I just don't know if Dempster is an AL pitcher, or if he wants to pitch in the AL, he did finally accept the trade to Texas last year, struggled somewhat with a 5+ ERA (though many pitchers struggle there), other then that had pitched only in the NL, looks more like a NL pitcher to me. Especially for a 3 year deal. I'd hate to give him a 3 year deal. Also a lot of innings on that arm, came up at 21 pitched a bunch of innings his first couple of years, then went to the bullpen for a few and then has been right around 200 IP in each of the past 5 years except last year.
  4. I just don't understand the Twins, they do this crap year after year. They can give some middle infielder who can barely hit .220 with no power a starting job and never take it away, but can't in their minds give someone who can actually hit HR's a job because his defense is not up to snuff. They did the same crap with Kubel, its as if they just can't say sink or swim with a guy, its not like there are any other BIG PROBLEMS with the team.
  5. Prior is not a terrible move, I actually thought the Twins should have brought him in when he was released by the Red Sox organization last year, as he couldn't have been much worse then what the Twins were sending out. As Seth mentioned he didn't pitch bad last year, and the year before he almost made the Yankees organization out of ST. Its not the worst person to be talking about inviting to ST, but at the same time, IDK if he is worth a thread on his own, unless there is actual news to report on him.
  6. Parmelee wasn't terrible in RF actually quite a bit better then I figured considering he really had played significant innings out there since he was in Beloit. If he can hit .270 with decent power and make the plays he can get to he will be fine out there. As far as Revere, the Twins should have looked at making him a second baseman. But of course that is outside the box thinking so it was never done. His defense is alright, he has good range, but a terrible arm. Big picture though I don't think its that bad. If they could move Willingham at the deadline and put Arcia or Hicks in LF (or CF and move Revere). It would help, but the big problem is not the OF defense its the pitching.
  7. The risk isn't worth the reward for Wilson, and my guess is his services will require some serious coin.
  8. Morneau is not going to accept a cheep deal, even if he struggles this year he will get a decent deal next year from someone. If he hits .300 and bangs 30 HR's he will get a really good long term deal next year. The Twins aren't going to extend him for a bunch of money just because it doesn't really fit their plans. I don't like trading him now though because I don't see him bringing much in return, if he is hitting .300 at the deadline he brings much more.
  9. The Twins being bad is one thing, its constantly making dumb decisions like keeping Drew Butera that is what is bad. Its not little league, doing everything right and playing somewhat good (though over-rated) defense isn't suppose to guarantee you a spot on the roster. At the end of the day you need to be able to hit a bit.
  10. Not really sure why Butera was extended a contract, or whatever the technical term is for not being non-tendered. I wouldn't mind a Hochever or Jurjens, at least there is some talent with them, even if they haven't really panned out.
  11. I just hope the Twins don't spend money just to spend money
  12. Does anyone have any numbers what Span would have made without the contract? just through arbitration and so on? It would have been more, but not that terribly much more. On the other hand if his batting average drops to the .260 ish range, you have an over paid, CF with no power whatsoever, and 5 guys in the organization that are better then him. With the type of player Revere is, its not worth the risk, I really didn't think it was worth the risk with Span.
  13. I read somewhere that Terry Ryan wants to bring in a starter for competition. I don't know if Plouffe will end up being much, or not. But its like Kubel all over again. Never wanting to give him a fair shot, and then send him out there when he's not 100% on top of it.
  14. Scouts are more important than many believe with the new SABR style. I'm a big believer in sabr-metrics but I don't believe in them replacing scouts. Scouts are meant to see more then those type of things, they are meant to spot possible injuries, mechanical problems and personal makeup. Is the guy showing up late, having terrible at-bats, limping as he rounds second, and getting lucky because of competition? That is where the scout is needed. And yes good scouts are worth their weight, though I believe the new scouts that are willing to accept the new style of evaluations and blend it with the old. As far as minor league coaching? IDK, I'm not one of those guys that says a good coach will be a savior or a bad one will destroy one. Its like teaching where 80% will do what they do in spite of teachers. same goes with coaching, roughly 80% are either going to prosper or decline whether the best minor league coach is coaching or your dad who knows little is coaching. The issue is with the other 20%, the foreign players, the younger players, the lower draft picks. What can coaches do for them. Add in the managerial factor, if a team is winning or in games it helps the entire team more. Kirby Puckett was drafted I believe 3rd overall. Though the story is good, its not like Mike Piazza whose dad told Lasorta to draft him, and did with the last pick.
  15. Every organization was blind to PED's in the 90's and early 00's so I don't want to hear that argument on why A organization isn't as good as B organization. Money doesn't help win championships but it sure helps with preventing prolonged bad years. If you have the budget you can have 1-2-3 bad drafts, 1-2-3 bad signings, 1-2-3 bad injuries. If you have money those hurt, if you don't they hurt more and for a longer period.
  16. The Cubs can afford to make this gamble, the Twins can't. Its just as simple as that, if the Twins spend $5.5 and has problems and pitches less then 50 innings it has a much larger impact on the Twins then it does on the Cubs. The Cubs need pitching and have the money to gamble on guys like Baker, the Twins don't have that luxury. Wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs traded him if he is having a decent season when the deadline happens.
  17. I'm guessing this means his shoulder injury is pretty bad? I don't really care much, just surprises me with the amount of pitching they keep around that they couldn't keep him around. If healthy he is something (hard throwing) that the Twins don't have.
  18. I agree that you can never have too much pitching, and agree that you can never predict a bullpen. But I also look at the Twins and I don't see a ton of holes in the bullpen. And I just wonder if the TR signing someone else's leftovers and taking up 40 man space and sitting in the bullpen until August when everyone gets upset with him after blowing leads and on here we have threads on the guy, and at the same time there is 1.2.3.4.5 guys at AAA who at least deserve the same shot. So I guess it depends on what the Twins are doing, if they are minor league contracts/AAA contracts its one thing, but if they are major league contracts or 40 man space contracts I'll be upset.
  19. No, the best thing would be to put a 180 IP limit and have him as a starter all year, whether that is in AAA or the majors. The problem is by putting a 130 IP limit, he could be done by the early August, and if he is good enough to be with the Twins all year he should be with the Twins all year.
  20. 130 is way to few. I don't agree with a 170-180 limit but I can live with it. 130 though is at the point where I'd consider putting him in the bullpen. Which is not where he is needed. Unless he isn't 100%, he should pitch 180 innings as a starter. If he is 1 of the 5 best starters in ST, he should start with the Twins, I don't care, whether that means he has to be shut down in August. If he is on a 130 IP count, the last thing we need is for him to use 30 of them in Rochester, when we have starters getting lit up in Minnesota
  21. I like Chavez as a player. However all signs point to him resigning with the Yankees. Plus there are other (better) teams out there that would be on the market for a 3B, and on top of it, how many wins does he bring in if he starts 45 games? Or even if he starts 110 games? I guess I just don't see it. There are holes on the team, and even if you think 3B is a hole, its #3 #4 on the list. It goes PItching, pitching, pitching, middle infield, pitching.
  22. I'd be careful before saying X type of player = X type of manager. Fact of the matter is some become coaches, some become managers, some try and fail. I don't know if Redmond would work or not. I don't think he would be any worse then a Scotty Ulger but what do I know. Is Joe Torre a great manager? Or did he just keep a very expensive team from going into the ditch? Same with Tito, same with every winning manager. They have all had bad years, they have all had bad spells. Belicek was fired at Cleveland. Showalter at NY, Texas and Arizona. Its just one of the things where certain people work well in certain spots. Many people said Ventura would never be able to manage because he didn't have the experience but I thought he did a good job for the White Sox. Ultimately I think its not the manger, its the core of coaches and how they work with the manager, and then how they relate to the owner and general manager. When the Twins were winning, they had a deep farm system, solid coaching, and a GM who was 100% behind the wheel. Right now the system is dry, the coaching is who knows, and I still don't know if TR is 100% behind the wheel. But then again what do I know
  23. I really don't understand this Vavra, Ullger stuff. Are they coaches or are they instructors? Ullger should not be a base coach. Was worse then Liddle at 3B and Liddle wasn't great. Vavra I thought did alright as a batting coach. But I only want 1 batting coach on the traveling, gameday coaching staff. I don't want half my players going to Vavra and half going to Bruno. That is only going to cause problems. It'll be interesting to see what happens none the least. But I guess I just don't understand the reassigned which is really just a job change. Reassigned made it sound like they are still in the organization but no longer coaches. But what do I know
  24. disagree on the large concept, they should take the best pitcher out there, unless there is a shortstop that is far and ahead better. No need for an Outfielder, the system is full of them, even if half of them pan out they are fine there.
  25. I'm not against the changes, however I thought Rick Anderson was as big of problem as the rest of them. The Twins had fired one coach (Al Newmon) during Gardy's tenure, if this doesn't shout, THIN ICE, I don't know what does
