  1. A's ponied up for Cespedes...yet the Twins paid Mauer significantly more money. Beane has exactly as many ALCS and World Series appearances as Ryan has had. The Rays had a nice run no doubt, but have lost in the first round of the playoffs the 3 times. Additionally, I am pretty sure the Twins have the consensus best farm system in baseball...so shouldn't the Twins scouting department reap some of the praise for that? As far as the "GM with a pair of balls" comment, that is not even worth a retort as it is immature and pointless.
  2. How many titles have the Rangers and Tigers had the past two decades? I love how the Twins make the playoffs 6 times in 9 years....yet many of you folks say "Playoffs mean nothing, its all about the titles" and yet you bring up the Tigers and Rangers (Two teams who haven't won a title anytime recently) as an example as such a much superior org then the Twins. It's hard to take those people seriously at times....
  3. The problem with #1 prospects is a good chunk of the time they don't live up to expectations. Do you think the rays would have been happy to have been on the hook for $150 mil + for delmon young? Also, I have spent plenty of money on ALDS tickets to see the Yankees destroy my twins I just enjoy being able to get $5 bleacher seats, or $20 tix 3 rows from the field. Also I always buy on stub hub anyways, so it's not like the Yankees are actually getting that money....it's the scalpers and season ticket holders who suffer during a "down year"
  4. Unless you are the Pirates, Indians, A's and Rays.... (aka almost half of the playoff teams last year)
  5. Cano is a 6.0-7.0 WAR player at this stage of his career, replacing him with Brian Roberts hasn't produced a WAR above 1.3 in 5 years, that is a significant loss. As much as we all hate A-Rod, when healthy (Big if) he is still prob a 2.5-3.0 WAR player, Kelly Johnson IMO will be lucky to reach 1.5 WAR. And yes, I realize that there is a lot more that WAR that goes into team wins and losses. Ellsbury is a 4.5-5.0 WAR player IF and its a big If he stays healthy. McCann is a 4 WAR player (Again I like this move) and frankly Tanaka could be anything from a 1.5-3.5 WAR guy this year IMO. I really don't like this off-season one bit for them, they ended up spending a ton more money (especially when you consider A-Rods contract will likely be back on the books in 2015) and I honestly don't think they got any better. Especially when you realize they lost Cano, Rivera, Pettite and A-Rod for 2014. Can't wait to see them finish 4th in that division, I see lots of summer days at Yankee stadium with me and my buddies where tickets will be about $5 each.
  6. It's a tired and wayyyyyyyyyy over used meme at this point "The Twins are historically cheap, derp!" It really adds nothing to the conversation, and the amount of money they gave Nolasco and Hughes actually contradicts that whole statement (This isn't even bringing up the fact that a couple years ago they backed up the brinks truck for Joe Mauer, whose contract is actually pretty similar to Tanaka) If the Twins thought it was a good investment, they would have given Tanaka the money, fortunately (IMO) they didn't think it was a good investment.
  7. The only move I liked was signing McCann. Ellsbury and tanaka will both be disasters IMO
  8. + 20 mil posting fee.
  9. Let's talk recent history, they are clearly falling behind. What lead to the 5 world series titles was an infusion of in house talent that came through the minors and became the key pieces to those teams: Rivera, Pettite, Jeter, Cano, Posada etc. Now the cupboard is bare and other teams are starting to reap the benefits of TV deals (LA Dodgers, LA Angels, Seattle Mariners etc) so now they can't simply "sign everybody" Also they have won only 1 title in the last 13 years...yes that is better than the Twins, but let's not pretend the Yankees have somehow been DOMINATING baseball the past decade or so.
  10. Slightly over means they still could have found a way to get under the threshold. That is the crazy thing about the Tanaka signing, its not costing them $25 mil a year, its costing closer to $35 million a year with the luxury tax.
  11. Needs more Shane Mack 1991
  12. Yankees have spent half a BILLION dollars this winter & still have Kelly Johnson likely starting at 3B & Brian Roberts at 2B, plus the farm system is a mess and nearly everyone is an injury waiting to happen in their lineup. This signing is just another bad move for a franchise that clearly has no idea what it is doing year in and year out.
  13. I don't understand the Plouffe hate, the guy isn't the greatest but he is clearly worth a one year 2.3 mil deal. The comparable price on the FA market nets you Mark Reynolds. I'm personally not a huge fan of offering Duensing a contract, but that is just me. $2 mil for him is fine, especially if he bounces back.
  14. Sano won't be playing opening day. It would be foolish, and I can't see it happening. I think Reynolds is a fine low dollar signing. Yeah, his defense is brutal, but at least provides some "push" to Plouffe, additionally you can platoon him at DH with Kubel. I don't really mind the strike outs, the guy still has put up some pretty nice numbers (127, 97, 117, 116, 96) OPS+ the last five years, and he has legit power. You could do worse for a back up 3B/1B platoon DH/PH.
  15. I think Hicks will kill it again and earn the first crack at the starting gig. To much logjam in the pen and back end of the rotation for any of those pitchers to make it IMO.
  16. Not a huge Ervin Santana fan, but if they can somehow get him on a 3 year reasonable deal, I would be all for it. However I think he ends up costing more than Nolasco. At this point, I'd prefer they go after a pseudo ace/#2 like Garza (or Bailey next season/trade this season) However, I wouldn't be against it as long as its a smart deal.
  17. Agreed, I think they ended up getting Nolasco and Hughes on pretty damn good deals. Reports also had them aggressive on some bats early on as well, they offered AJ two years but he choose to take a one year deal for a contender (Boston) and they were in on Salty but came up short. Obviously coming up a bit short doesn't help the team now or in the future, but it is a sign of encouragement that they were being aggressive so early on. I am sure they have other offers out to players currently as well, however they aren't simply going to overpay just to overpay. Realistically as I have stated a few times, they only positions that make sense improving over the course of the next 2-3 years are SS, C and maybe a corner OF spot. Nobody is really left at C, so the Twins will roll the dice with Pinto/Suzuki at this point. SS has Drew, who is a damn fine overall player and would be a very nice upgrade over everyone else they have tossed out to man the position over the past few years. There are plenty of LF/RF on the market every year, at this point I think the best bet is to roll with Willingham to start the year in one of the spots and Arcia in the other.
  18. And what it tells us, is that there is a very good chance that Florimons HR count of 9 last year was pretty damn flukey to begin with. Florimon simply is not an every day major league player, he will never hit enough to be one.
  19. It has been crickets everywhere the past month or so in the FA market. The entire SP market is being held up by Tanaka, and to a lesser extend the hitting market as well. The minute he signs the 5-6 legit contending teams that didn't land him will go after the next best SP's and the bats that cost 45 mil+
  20. Looks like I won't be able to attend, anyone who wants it shoot me a PM. In lieu of paying me just make a donation.
  21. This is how they should do it: Hall of Famers who are alive: 30% of the vote BBWWAAAAAAAA: 30% of the vote MLB Players/Managers/GMs with 10 or more service time in the major leagues (one way or another): 30% of the vote. Fans: 10% of the vote.
  22. Can we stop with the 3 year or 3 year with option contract offer talk? It simply isn't reality, in no possible scenario does garza get less guaranteed years then a guy like Nolasco. I would be shocked if he signs for less than 5 (or if the 5th year is an option year it's going to have an easy vesting threshold and/or large buyout.
  23. Said it before, will say it again. Signing JD Drew is the best non SP move the Twins could make at this point. Every other position either has talent there already, or talent within the next year or two. Just look: 1B- Mauer 2B- Dozier/Rosario 3B- Sano OF- Buxton, Arcia, Hicks etc C- Pinto
  24. Yeah, I don't think a reasonable 4 year deal would be an albatross at all. I was just pointing out, they certainly do exist.
