  1. And much like the Ryan process the Beane process stopped working, which is why he did the right and unselfish thing for the club and stepped down from the GM role....meanwhile at One Twins Way it continues to be business as usual, because their is ultimately no pressure on anyone in the Twins org. Nobody is held accountable and rarely is anyone actually fired, it's almost the equivalent of the DMV, conservative, slow to react to change (how long did it take the Twins to actually say "oh yeah, maybe we do need some hard throwers instead of pitch to contact"?) but hey, it's nearly impossible to get fired!
  2. Not to mention their aggressiveness with calling up prospects. Sano was brought up too late and only after the Twins were trotting out Nunez and Suzuki as a DH. If Sano was brought up 15 days earlier, they could be in the playoffs right now. Duffey- Waited too long. Berrios- Don't even get me started. Meanwhile the Cubs promoted aggressively and it has paid off in spades. Does anyone think if the Cubs had May and Pelfrey that Theo and Maddon would choose to banish May to the pen?
  3. Yeah, because of who the GM was.
  4. Uhhh, Hughes provided nothing this year, I wouldn't call that a "win" yet.
  5. One could argue they were eliminated from being a "legit" contender the minute they decided that Berrios was never coming up in 2015. A playoff rotation of Gibson, Duffey and ??,??? would have been eaten alive.
  6. Yup, the Arrieta move was a fantastic one because he always had good stuff, was still young (27) and was coming off frankly a poor luck season (4.05 FIP but a 6.20 ERA). He was the perfect "buy low", "change of scenery" and low risk high reward type of a target. Sort of like what the Pirates did with Liriano in a way...as Lev points out the Twins and Ryan much prefer to go with the non upside guys like Correia instead.
  7. Yeah, it's hard to go 15+ Highly, highly disagree. The Twins wouldn't have had to give up Rosario, Harrison and Gibson comparison makes no sense, he has pitched 44 innings the last 3 years with a 6.22 ERA to boot. Nolasco would be a much better comparison to the Harrison part.
  8. Two front of the rotation starters, a legit catcher and another legit bat or two. Those are some pretty big "moves" to fill.
  9. Yup.
  10. Phil Hughes is 29 years old, has pitched for 8 seasons and has a carer 4.33 ERA, I'm sorry, that isn't #2 upside. At this stage, baring an arm transplant he is what he is. Ditto with Santana.
  11. .500 isn't the goal and never should be a goal, when 33% of teams make the playoffs, the goal should be playoffs or bust every single year. Not "oh well we are on pace to MAYBE have a shot next year"
  12. The Twins could have gotten Hamels and not given up any of their top prospects like Kepler and Berrios. Source: http://www.forbes.com/sites/joshbenjamin/2015/07/30/texas-rangers-made-out-like-bandits-in-cole-hamels-trade/
  13. Billy Beane isn't a GM anymore.
  14. This was Ryans 17th year at the helm, and as mentioned in a previous thread his overall track record is poor. 1 playoff series win. For all the talk of the Royals and their long rebuild, they have more playoff series wins then we do in the last 10,15,20,25 years.
  15. It's not about luring Theo or Maddon here, its about Ryan and the Twins org and the refusal to budge on their 20 year old ideas on how to run a club. There was nothing stopping the Twins and Ryan from taking an approach closer to Theo then "biz as usual/Twins way etc" For all this talk about how much the Twins are improved etc, at the end of the day they had the 7th best record of 15 in the AL and ranked in the bottom third in most hitting and pitching categories. To the OP original question: The Twins are significantly behind the Astros at this stage and aren't even in the same category as the Cubs. The only thing people are bringing to the table who don't agree with this are just excuses (Market size, injuries, the Cubs got lucky on a trade etc)
  16. Source?
  17. The Twins rebuild is complete? I didn't know that finishing a couple games over .500 and missing the playoffs was "complete" It hasn't been 4 years, it has been 5 years now.
  18. I wouldn't do the trade anyways since I think Joe has a better shot at putting up solid numbers moving forward. Also as mentioned Joe isn't going to wave his no trade clause, he is from Minnesota, his family lives in Minnesota, he likes Minnesota and its not a "tough" market to play in.
  19. Chief and I agree on a lot of things.
  20. The Cubs payroll is ten million more than the Twins (aka what we paid a 40 year old RF to produce a 88 OPS+ for us this season), the Twins absolutely could have mirrored the Cubs strategy. And the Twins have spent on pitching FYI, they have committed over 100 million to Hughes, Santana and Nolasco.
  21. What have you done for me lately? The Royals have been to more World Series then the Twins have the last 25 years, they have won more divisions then the Twins have the last 5 years.
  22. A top 50 prospect would be ideal IMO much rather have a high upside minor leaguer then an average major leaguer that they could potentially acquire. (i.e I would rather have Kepler then Plouffe at this stage for the next several seasons)
  23. We are competing with every single other team in baseball, the "large market" excuses need to stop since it really isn't relevant. The Royals managed to get to the world series last year, they aren't large market.
  24. In a heartbeat Yankees won't do that trade though.
