  1. It should also be noted that it's highly, highly, highly unlikely that all of Buxton, Sano, Berrios, Duffey, May, Park, Kepler are all going to become great or even very good players. Worrying too much about our early arbitration figures 4-5 years down the road just seems pointless to me. If Buxton, Sano, Berrios etc were 3 years away from free agency as of today, I would understand the qualm with signing a big contract, but in this scenario? No way.
  2. I will take it one further, I would rather roll with that rotation and TRADE Milone. You can get some BP back in return (Milone for Storen seemed like a no brainer) or you can get a prospect back, and use the $5.5 million owed to Milone to go out and sign a RP like Bastardo etc Too late for that last part now though :-/
  3. Nobody is advocating 7 years... and it's a little presumptuous to assume that every "ACE" will be washed up in 3-4 years, Cueto would still be on the right side of 35, there is no reason why he couldn't still be effective in years 5 and 6. It's not like we are talking about giving a 34 year old a 6 year deal, we are talking about a 29 year old.
  4. $55-$70 million tied up in 5 players isn't a big thing at all, especially because in your example pretty much all those young players hit their ceiling. The Twins can certainly afford a $25 mil a year player, it just means they will have two less $12-$13 mil a year player (Hughes, Nolasco, Hunter, etc)
  5. Punto, Parmelee, Monroe, Barnes, McCracken
  6. Come on, some people (not you) act like Minnesota is some waste land where no player would want to play. Great city, good ballpark, good fans, and a team that is on the rise. While it may not be the "most popular" destination in baseball, it certainly is a good one. I just don't buy the stance that a top free agent would just "refuse" to sign with the Twins.
  7. I'm not sure why signing Nolasco was some "bold" move, it was a mid level deal that nearly every other team seems to sign every year or so. It only seems like a bold move because TR was even more conservative his first time around.
  8. It's not even 3 mid level contracts instead of one big one, it's 2 mid level contracts instead of one big one. You can sign a big name and still sign another mid level guy (Santana) You could have Cueto (or even Price) +Santana or you could have Hughes+Nolasco+Milone+Santana for pretty much the same amount of coin. To put it another way, which rotation looks better: Cueto/Price Santana Gibson Duffey Berrios or Santana Gibson Hughes Duffey Milone (Berrios is now waiting in the wings and Nolasco is just eating a roster spot)
  9. Those will still be the arb years (and in most cases early arb years) for the players you listed. Again, Cueto or any similar big signing doesn't prevent the Twins in the least from retaining Sano, Buxton etc
  10. Sano, Buxton, Roasrio, Berrios etc aren't due a big payday until 2021 or later. Signing Cueto to even a 5 year contract this offseason doesn't prevent them at from keeping those guys around, since Cueto's contract would be up before any of those guys actually hit free agent years.....
  11. Yeah, that is a good point in regards to the contract. I guess what is most frustrating to me is that Rubio just continues to be such a poor shot, at some point you would like to see a little bit of growth in that part of his game. I am not trying to be a simpleton in this approach or anything, and I'm not saying "cut him" I just think you could get a team like the Knicks or someone to overpay for him in a trade. If I had to rate the T Wolves issues in my mind they would be as followed: 1. Coaching. Mitchell has to go, bring in someone who will let guys shoot the 3. 2. Depth (Lack of depth at the 4 and 5 is a big concern IMO)
  12. Agreed 100% on this. Hopefully that is the case. Hell, I wonder if Boston is already starting to worry about Fat Panda at 3rd? As far as a return for Plouffe goes: I have said it before and will say it again, I would like them to get back a couple high upside lottery ticket types in return, a low level catching prospect would be nice as well, but at this stage, I would take some prospects back for him in a heartbeat.
  13. Rubio can't shoot. 36% is pathetic, teams don't even guard him, instead they are free to double team Wiggins and the rest. Get a PG that can actually shoot the ball and suddenly Wiggins frees up (LaVine can't handle the ball, but at least he opens up Wiggins and the rest) Trade him to the Knicks, get some draft picks back and build up that way.
  14. Did I ever say Rubio was bad? I just think they need to aim for a more well rounded PG if they want to succeed, I also mentioned that Rubio would be ok if you played him 20-25 minutes a game and found a veteran PG that can cover the other half and actually shoot the ball as well.
  15. Your whole statement was about the unworthiness of this thread/discussion. Again if you think it's not worth while, then feel free to ignore the thread, several other posters here (including new ones) seem to think the discussion topic is just fine. Just stop derailing it.
  16. Yeah I edited the comment to mention that in regards to Fletcher.
  17. Spielman has gotten a lot closer than Ryan to winning it all, and Fletcher has actually won some playoff series in his time and made some high impact signings and trades to better the team. Also fletcher will be very much on the hot seat if they miss the playoffs this year, that's what happens when you have an owner who actually wants to win!
  18. Color me skeptical that he can duplicate those numbers again....
  19. Seems like a risk worth taking IMO, not exactly like things could get much worse since Rubio has arrived. Plus if a team like the Knicks or some other team is willing to overpay, let them. Sign a veteran PG, let Jones have a few minutes and draft another one that someday potentially can be a complete player (healthy, can shoot, D, etc)
  20. Rondo has shot 46% lifetime, Rubio has shot 36% (and it's not like he is getting better either)
  21. Feel free to ignore the thread? Just because you disagree with something doesn't mean other people can't discuss it.
  22. Short answer: Yes, yes, yes. Long answer: Yes. 1. SSS no doubt, but Sano had above average advanced stats defensively at 3rd base last year (see: Fangraphs), he also passed the eye test and nearly every scouting report out over the past couple years has said he should be able to stick at 3B for at least a couple years. 2. Sano has never played the OF, his skillset/body/etc doesn't look to transition there. Sano has played 3B for several years in the Twins org if they truly viewed him as a OF they likely would have played him there in the minors. 3. Why not actually give him a shot at 3B now? Guy is gonna hit .900+ OPS either way, at least put him at the position where he is comfortable, more than likely he is the Twins best player in 2016 and several years after (him or Buxton) Why do we have to move his ass around so much to accommodate average (Plouffe) and complete unknowns (Park)? If you said, Plouffe at 3B for the first half of 2016 and Sano at DH, I could have lived with it, but then to force him into the OF (and then trade one of your best fielding OF for a backup catcher to boot?) What is going on?
  23. One question: Is the goal to win a World Series? If so: the System has clearly been broken during the TR and BS era. 20+ combined years, and they haven't even been back to a World Series. Only once did they make the final 4. Last I checked there were anywhere between 14 and 16 teams in the AL during that time and 28-30 teams overall. That is failure plain and simple. Until they start throwing parades for "playoff participants" or hand out rings for them, I don't see how anyone can call the Ryan era nothing but a failure to achieve the end goals. Morale victories and going .500 or slightly above is for mid tier college programs. In the pros, you gotta get some hardware to "win"
  24. Obama should elect whoever he feels is the best candidate for the job in his opinion, period. He should pick the same one that he would have picked in year 1, year 4, year 5 or 6 of his Presidency. He shouldn't comprise his views to lean "more right" or "more to the middle" then he would otherwise, he should pick who he feels is best and then let the rest play out, more likely then not his choice would be a slightly left but reasonable/solid choice anyways. Then it's in the senate's court at that point anyways.
  25. People say this, yet a Rubio team has never made the playoffs nor gotten super close. I guess he would be ok if you could find another PG to share minutes with him, but just imagine just how more effective Wiggins and co would be if other teams actually had to worry about the Wolves PG making shots.
