  1. The Beane comp is a bit painful right now if you're Ryan. Beane got promoted and a stake in the team. Nice write up. My sentiments exactly. All in the eye of the beholder. I hope I am not so petty--and there isn't a reason--that I spend the next five years getting back at the fire TR crowd with I-told-you-to-be-careful-what-you-wish-fors. Judging from a lot of comments I've read, there is already some "firers remorse."
  2. I'm excited for Gonsalves and the other AA pitchers. Hard not to see some or all of them factoring in some way to next years rotation.
  3. I think the idea of positive reinforcement for adults might be underrated. I can imagine the players maybe paying attention to this report, and if not them, there are commenters who do who might just let them know, "hey, according to Twinsdaily, you had the best day out of anybody in the system." As my sixth grade coach liked to say (and I didn't quite get), it's nice to get that "feather in your cap" from time to time.
  4. Seems like a hot-hitting catcher with a track record of having had at least one similar stretch would be an extremely desirable trade commodity. Even if this isn't the "real" Suzuki, and all stats and projections say he won't keep it up, gambling that he can for a few weeks might be a pretty good move for a playoff hopeful. Like April games, mid-July games count just as much as game 162.
  5. Has anyone compared Gibson to Arrieta? Just wondering. Hoping there is something in Gibby that could make him a later blooming Ace like Arrieta or Kuechel.
  6. Actually it seems to be right in line with the educational psychologist Vigotsky's concept of the Zone of Proximal Development. In assessing children's reading ability, it is common practice to give them harder and harder material to decode and comprehend, until they reach their "frustration level." In between independent and frustration lies the instructional level, a fairly narrow window that corresponds to the ZPD. The theory is that only in that zone does true learning occur. Without getting pushed far enough, you'll never know what you are capable of. So, pushing him to frustration--humiliation, as you see it; hopefully Jorge is mature enough to take it as a learning experience--is actually an authentic form of assessment. Beats a bunch of good 'ol boys going with their gut instincts, doesn't it?
  7. Zach Jones has been pitching pretty well, hasn't he? As has Reed lately. If I can think of a silver lining for Berrios or Stewart, it is that the Twins knocked Cole Hamels out for the second time in a week. Happens to everyone.
  8. Well played. While I might be a saber metric nincompoop, I should have gotten that one right. It is the first episode on a collection my kids have watched a thousand times.
  9. I'm glad you cleared that up. I glanced at the box scores and saw the Goodrum conundrum and couldn't figure it out. Before I could, my phone was assaulted by a series of pop up ads on the MiLB site, so I gave up. I thought maybe with the promotions, Goodrum was needed in two places at once. Bugs Bunny once took a taxi-cab to catch a long fly out, from the top of the Statue of Liberty, so it IS possible.
  10. Holy cow! I haven't checked back on this thread since early this morning. For the first time in probably forever, I got prospect news from somewhere else than TD (Jay's promotion, on Foxsports North via the national Foxsports website.) Total system failure, TD! Just kidding, but a little surprised there isn't a hot topic thread going about all these positive moves; lord knows there is no dearth of negative topics to talk about. 21 pages on Arcia, but no thread on this? Actually, maybe I should look more carefully before posting this. Nah.
  11. Sometimes I look at pictures of these guys and have to remind myself, these guys are just kids. Jorge doesn't look old, but he doesn't look like a kid in that picture. He looks like a hired assassin in a Quentin Tarantino western.
  12. I agree with what Seth and a couple of commenters have articulated. Particularly the idea that it may not have been the best plan, or it was one that was fraught with potential for disaster, but of all possible outcomes, what we've witnessed has been as bad as an outcome as could possibly be expected. On the other hand, to put it in extremist, internet-speak, it seems some people are on record as having said "I told you this wasn't a World Series winning team. Therefore I predicted the team would be this bad."
  13. Interesting discussion, and well-made points on both sides of the coin. I would imagine that for frugal owners, an additional incentive to abide by the contract, agreement, pirate's code, or sorta-set-of-guidelines--call it what you want--is to keep overall bonus sizes in check. And I can't blame them. I just spent a weekend with my 16 year old nephew. Good kid, but I can't imagine giving him $4 million dollars and sending him around the world for a job. Is the problem with agreeing on an international draft a continuing disparity in the level of commitment to scouting and facilities various teams have made?
  14. If you want to look at the "bright" side, I think we are witnessing an historically bad phenomena. And I don't just mean baseball, I'm talking all of human related history. This is like Vesuvius wiping out Pompeii, or Atlantis sinking into the ocean. It is fascinating to watch, much like it would have been interesting to have somehow lived through the meteor impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. It's almost like the inverse of the statistically improbable set of events that occurred to create life on earth those many millions of years ago. Cluster luck to the extreme. Who will survive? What types of adaptations will evolve in the new super-species that is left after this debacle? Are TR and Molitor the right people to be leading the team through this calamity of biblical proportions? I don't know. But people laughed at and criticized Noah...
  15. Interesting premise. I know I am maybe holding them in to high an esteem, but I'd have a hard time losing Stewart, Romero, or Jorge in order to save medium upside (though relatively proven) relievers like Rogers and Pressley, maybe even May. Other than that, I can't argue with your picks. Seems like if you essentially "have" to protect Mauer because of his rights, you shouldn't actually have to, if that makes sense. Seems like those guys would be exempt from a process like this.
  16. Good stuff all around. It was enlightening to hear the breakdown of Gonsalves game. I have to admit, I was bummed to see Goodrum go ofer. Not that it means anything, but he's always been a favorite, and it would have been cool to see him follow up is first game with another loud one…kind of like Blankenhorn has done so far, except this time he had a quietly productive game.
  17. It would be so nice for Buxton's development if he could stick around for a team wide hot streak, if it happens. If the Twins could put together a stretch of games like last night's, I wonder if he wouldn't relax a little a get caught up in the wave. That being said, bringing Rosario up might not be a bad idea. I'm excited to see how the promotions fall out today. Will the ripple effect even reach the Twins? Whose going to see their Twins career end today? A couple of AA/AAA pitchers who probably don't deserve to get cut, but are caught in the crunch? As the Breaking Ball Spins...
  18. While I am not going to argue with those who will soon fill this comment section with I told you so's--you did, and you were right--I will suggest this is partially driven by a desire to not screw up the one developmental thing that might actually work out well for the Twins this year: Max Kepler as Rightfielder of the Next Decade. Rather than do something like move him to center, left, the bench, or Rochester, it seems like ending the Miguel Sano experiment, as well as the cutting of Arcia, is a clear indication that the Twins have a 'plan' to stick with Kepler. We saw what he did after Arcia was cut and he wasn't bumped; who knows, maybe this will really buoy his confidence. Or, maybe I am grasping at any sign of hope in this dismal season.
  19. I'm curious what people think about the Red Sox cutting Rusney Castillo. BIG investment that started off with a bang, but since then he too has stunk, and/but been given very limited opportunities this year. It seems to me that fringe prospects like Arcia, Castillo, and Grossman get fewer chances. You've got to seize the opportunity and not make excuses about playing time.
  20. Yes, but "supposedly" to whom? Arcia and Santana BOTH stink. Arcia was deemed most expendable…for now. The Arcia/Santana debate is a bit like the Dean/Zach Jones thread; a lot of teeth gnashing over fringe players. Given Dean's modest mediocrity vs. Jones frustrating ineffectuality, I'd say Ryan and crew guessed correctly on that move. My biggest takeaway from the Arcia deal is a positive--the Twins didn't demote Kepler in order to hang onto an "asset" with "potential."
  21. Bravo. Well said, Nick. I'm glad they didn't send Kepler down in order to give him one more chance. Best of luck, Ozwaldo.
  22. The Ft. Myers pitching staff (now minus Stewart) has been my number one Twins highlight this season. Even taking the loss, Landa sounds impressive. I don't want to ruin these guys, but can we fast track them? They are needed ASAP!
  23. Thanks for sharing, Seth (and Nelson). I enjoy these behind the scenes stories of the real people behind the stat line. And, as someone who doesn't watch much live baseball, it is good to be reminded just how young they are, and where they are in life. I know my age 17-21 years were interesting…I probably wasn't making to many "prospect" lists at that point. Good luck to him, and keep working!
