  1. Same here. But to clarify, is this like a punch card of the customer loyalty type--buy 12, get the 13th free? And then it would follow that Matt does not frequent the ol' Froyo Shop that much? Regardless, excellent entertaining writing. As a Twins fan, I relate to your statement about Chapman. There are probably a lot of moneyballish things that account for the A's success--like Liam Hendriks, but having a true superstar at third certainly helps, even though it may not fit the popular narrative.
  2. I myself made a silly error with a RISP almost in scoring position yesterday. The RISP in question was a Recliner In Sitting Position. Before I could quite get it "home," I first had to take it through the arbor dealy at the end of the front sidewalk. Conventional wisdom says you 'shift' the sucker on its side and shimmy it through safely, but being in a hurry, and not being overly fond of the shift, I decided to try the direct path. I thought its WPA (width probably acceptable) was within the margin of error, but I was wrong--the recliner handle was just outside of the strike zone, as emphatically framed by the arbor. No need to call New York on this one. All's well that ends well, though, as I overcame the mistake and did indeed finally score a recliner in sitting position. Having learned from my mistake, I wisely went with the shift to get it in the front door, and again into the next room. If the Twins' are indeed below average with RISP, here's hoping that the regression to the mean occurs during the playoffs.
  3. How about Prelander Berroa instead of Colina?
  4. Awesome sermon, and wow, what a day for Wander. Good for him. Also nice to see Cavaco have a good line. But as you say, there is more to the story. Albee Weiss has got my attention. Seems like every year, someone at E-town makes a run at 20 homers. I'm starting to think Larnach is close to (or beyond) that spot where he could headline a major trade. Not that I want to trade him, just that our top packages don't end after Lewis/AK/Graterol. There might be scouts out there that would value Larnach higher than any of those guys in a trade. Great night.
  5. Arraez and Schoop are practically polar opposites. If you could somehow meld the two together, I think you'd have an MVP candidate.
  6. A Loogy in addition to Lugo? Why not add some Caviar? (Beluga, of course) Luckily, we already have La Tortuga.
  7. This is awesome! Thanks for sharing. Well done, Mr. Bauer. I was kind of wishing there had been a little more ceremonial acknowledgement on the field between the two--they clearly knew what was up. Maybe a tip of the cap to each other. It would have been funny if Perez handed Max a gift certificate to Chili's or something (vague reference to "The Office.)
  8. I'm kind of impartial on all this--I don't think either guy will be on the eventual playoff roster. However, it seems like pitching a few innings in a blowout would have been exactly what Meija would have been good for. Morin seems like more of a short stint specialist guy...which is maybe why they kept him?
  9. For some reason I'm good with the "sweep the leg" metaphor, but the whole "step on their throats" one bothers me for some reason. I wouldn't mind if that one got laid to rest along with the so-called "definition of insanity" one, which I gratefully haven't seen as much of lately.
  10. Gordon is exactly the type of player that the savvy folks in Houston, LA, and NY like to trade. He'll certainly sound good to a casual fan base lamenting the loss of their World Series ace. Actually, he'd fit in really well with that collection of second generation stars in Toronto.
  11. Morris was pretty exasperated with Gibson as well, on the TV. His slow approach, and especially his inability to bear down after giving up a solo homer. As a Twins fan, it's always felt like we came out on the wrong side of these "luck" based games. Adrianza's throw, Mercado's read, Goody's flub, the Perez throwout attempt (that was like even Steven luck--horrible throw, but it hit an ump, preventing another base.) However, what Rogers did to those guys was the farthest thing from luck. And the Indians were pretty lucky that the Twins didn't hit better with RISP last night. (I did it! I kept myself from double pluralizing RISP!) Almost as good as Rogers' finish, however, was Buxton's last AB. After a three pitch flail-fest where he looked like the Buck of Yore, he fixed his approach and just missed pounding one off (or over) the wall.
  12. Glad Royce is okay. I'm going to force myself to believe minor leaguers wouldn't throw intentionally at someone's head, ever, and that was just one that got away. But, geez.
  13. To not 40 man him, I assume. With where he appears to be at right now, it would be a real shame if someone took him and stunted whatever growth he's got to make, by having him sit on a MLB bench for a year.
  14. Despite my best efforts, it is hard not to wish on every "top" prospect a trajectory like the one the Acuna's and Guerrero's seem to be on. Forget panning out, or being really good--nowadays they need to be all that, and they need to do it as teenagers!
  15. How about "Exceptionally Raw?" Hopefully not the heir apparent in the Matt Moses-Trevor Plouffe lineage.
  16. Cool article. If I am ever on a sport radio call in quiz, it will be good to remember that the Rangers lost two straight World Series in 2010-11. I completely had forgotten, but the Cliff Lee deal helped me remember those teams a bit. I just don't believe the woe is me stereotypes will play out. The FO will get some help, and the only thing we'll be lamenting is the loss of some prospects.
  17. It seems that league-wide, teams have done a good job of figuring out who to let go to free agency. Relief pitchers are so flash in the pan. The next CBA should have some sort of mid-season "draft," where every team is allotted a bonus pool, and any pitcher signed on one of those minor league deals gets a chance to be in it. Reshuffle the deck, so to speak, while getting these guys a little bit of extra money that they deserve. I have to think that the top priority of any scouting department right now has to be identifying the next relief pitching breakout guys.
  18. I missed what the reason was that had Thorpe starting, but nice job. I guess I'm glad there is such a thing as "WPA," because without looking into the nuances, I would have given Duffey 100% of this loss. The White Sox must have spent the rain delay doing homework, and not playing Fortnite. Bummer. Nonetheless, hell of a first half! The Twins deserve more All-Stars, but I hope this puts a little chip on everyone's shoulders. He who bats last, bats best. No wait, he who bats last has a 100% likelihood of being in the World Series.
  19. Developing effective relievers is the current high value commodity in MLB. Or maybe it has always been. The Twins cashed in on Pressly, probably in error. Now they are going to have to pay through the nose to acquire someone else's Pressly, or Edwin Diaz, or Ken Giles, or David Robertson/Tommy Kahnle (I'm talking about the first time these guys were traded.) Judging from the list of options, I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that somebody else's castoff can become something of value to the Twins, however.
