  1. I guess the folklore that playing golf ruins your baseball swing isn't in fashion anymore?
  2. Yes, we can teach those multitudes of lazybones out there to fend for themselves, with the help of a little tough love from a properly reconstituted government. And that same government can prevent those brown-skinned people with the wrong religion from killing a few people at a time, by making life impossible for the millions of similar people with no harmful intent. But thousands of gun deaths a year? Ain't nothin' nobody can do about that! The mutually inconsistent views Trump's wing of the party has on the use of gubmint boggles my mind. (I note that nobody I saw while briefly sampling Fox News last night was queasy about "politicizing" yesterday's killings, nor saying "now is not the time".) (Sorry, I can't help tying all this crap together. It's part-and-parcel.)
  3. I've seen videos like this before, so I knew where to fast-forward to. The "reaction video" that followed was also a tipoff.
  4. Maybe it's overwrought, but I like Tim Brown's writeup of the game. It hearkens back, for me, an older style of sports writing. https://sports.yahoo.com/world-series-game-6-defensive-play-helped-force-game-7-065832847.html "There are no pitch counts on Halloween night." True dat.
  5. Nice jinx.
  6. Based on the desire to keep certain statues around, the provisional prohibition on slavery might be the most partisan issue in the US.
  7. April Fools Day is about 5 months from now. HTH.
  8. East Coast bias. Well, sure, there's that.
  9. The maxim, "you have all winter to rest up", only applies if the pitchers can indeed summon up their best stuff when tired. The data provided in that FG piece suggests the hand was overplayed in this case. Of course the pitch quality is being discussed after the fact, and sometimes you just don't know for sure while the reliever is only warming up, just as you (probably) can't know that a Darvish is going to come out there one night with absolutely no command. I also wonder if Cameron overstates the point about the starting pitcher going through the lineup a third time. He states the analytics as suggesting the lower-tier relievers are no worse than your starter by that point - but that careful phrasing (used twice) also doesn't give a compelling reason to make that pitching change either, if the data is only suggesting one is as good (bad?) as the other.
  10. Good pitchers can have bad games (Darvish going out there with zero command), but I've drawn almost the opposite conclusion to yours. We're seeing state of the art offenses, and only the best pitchers stand a chance. When those pitchers falter and have to come out, their replacements do even worse and you end up with double-digit scores. Our Twins' offense is good but not yet on a par with the best. Our pitching, OTOH, would be getting absolutely slaughtered in these series. Our front office has a lot of work to do, on multiple fronts, unless the hope is to win a championship on a fluke some year. Top-half in pitching isn't going to be enough.
  11. Mod note: Per the site's Comment Policy, I'd like to ask all parties to remember to avoid making it personal when disagreeing on substance, and in particular to not express concern with the inner workings of someone else's mind. It never leads anywhere good.
  12. My takeaways from the Series so far: these are state of the art offenses, and only the very best pitchers can hold them off for very long at a time. If the present Twins pitching staff were by some miracle taking part here, it would be double-digit runs against them every game. And our offense, while good, is not quite yet ready to inflict the same damage on other teams.
  13. I realize that, despite the title, this article focuses on the backups. But for me, deciding on the big pieces comes before deciding on who fits in as the bench players. At starting shortstop Polanco was a pleasant surprise for me with his defense, but he's still somewhere between only acceptable and average. Unlike some, I believe in his bat despite a subpar 2017. But it wouldn't be a shocking development if the front office took some sort of aggressive step to improve the defense there. It's a cliche to be strong up the middle, but cliches come from somewhere. In a matchup to either World Series team this year, the Twins would be weak by comparison at that spot. With a stronger starting SS, maybe both Escobar and Adrianza aren't needed on the 25-man, opening a spot for a more defensively-limited big bat.
  14. I might have jinxed him. The Prof flunked the fourth inning pop quiz.
  15. Forgot to point out that Forsythe is playing third. Our third baseman was not on the trade block this past offseason.
  16. Taylor's a very nice center fielder.
  17. Yeah, getting picked off first to score the run from third was probably just how they drew it up in the clubhouse.
  18. If you like curveballs, there's a good chance a clinic is being put on for your benefit tonight by Prof Kershaw.
  19. Stuart Turner has positional value.
  20. He failed to explore the ramifications of Schroedinger's Cat. Anyway, next I want to see this writer's hawt taek on A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss.
  21. LOL! Too much Two Buck Chuck that evening.
  22. Plunk 'em next time they're up and they'll change their tune.
  23. Buck was making it sound as though he'd be coming out after the sixth, regardless. I have no real rooting interest but was kind of glad Springer hit the home run just to avoid that particular controversy.
