  1. The first inning tonight was hell. You positive you'd put up with that, for 20+ additional starts if that's how it went?
  2. Best news I've heard in a while. My hope was that he wasn't in AAA simply to get more experience there, but to reconstruct his swing and maybe even the entire approach at the plate, out of the glare of the major league environment. That isn't something that can be mastered overnight ("OK coach, good, got it, thanks!") so a return to Minneapolis in July is soon enough to not worry me. I saw him in Pawtucket the other day, but am not nearly an astute enough scout to notice a change in his leg kick or whatever. I am exactly astute enough to notice and appreciate the ball leaving the yard on the second pitch of the game, though. Bottom line, stop biting on the sliders in the dirt, stop flailing at pitches too far outside, stop swinging through strikes in the zone. All interconnected of course (which is why I don't think it's an exaggeration to view it as a reconstruct), but it's still a lot to work on.
  3. He had a lot of flaws at the plate. Not laying off of breaking pitches in the dirt, not laying off of low outside pitches, but also swinging through pitches in the strike zone. I think 3 months in the minors to make sure all of these are corrected will be just fine.
  4. Bingo. The more I think about the GM's job, the more I believe that the constraint of having 25 players at a time on the roster is the biggest limiting factor in constructing a championship team. WAR is a nice simplification of the issue: to construct a 100-win team, you need about 50 WAR in that one season. Voila, you need to achieve 2 WAR on average from every slot on your roster. Utility players and relievers by nature of their jobs can rarely give you 2. And some guys will disappoint or be injured and not give you any WAR at all that year. So 4+ WAR players are gold. You can't win a pennant with 100 0.5-WAR players; you can't rely on players who amass 10 WAR but require 10 years to do it. To have a guy like Trout, who you can pencil in for pretty much 8 WAR every year, gives you quite a head start toward your 50. And if you're not aiming for 50, at least at some near-future point, why bother? You could offer 100 players for Trout. Still no deal.
  5. Contempt for opinions other than one's own is red meat of a different type.
  6. Now I know that there are other things than water balloons to worry about at the next Moderators' Convention.
  7. I was so looking forward to a sudden shift in POV as the camera went flying out of the operator's hand.
  8. Pfff. I played RF for my slo-pitch softball team and had the same talent.
  9. All the thrilling excitement of video challenge aside, and notwithstanding Park's good recovery to juggle and hold onto the ball, this play was an example of why I'm not completely totally 100% fully outright sold on Escobar as a defensively solid shortstop.

  11. Bullpen's going to have a pitch a 4-inning shutout; I think we've seen our outburst on offense for the night.
  12. An enjoyable video is up on Deadspin.
  13. Leaving some comedy gold for you to mine.
  14. So, for the Twins we instead do a cover of Prince's B-side, "When Doves Yawn."
  15. So was mine. No calculation necessary, they are like minor leaguers.
  16. No, that's the ratio of pitches in the dirt that they have stopped.
