But you started this sub-thread with the statement "Strikeout guys struggle to complete more than six innings", which is just not supported by any evidence anyone has presented, in fact quite the opposite. I normally enjoy reading your posts and I kind of hate to seem to hammer on this, but it seemed so fundamental to your position.
I muddled through writing a lengthy response to an earlier post, only to discover after posting that several others had answered more concisely. So I'll summarize my thoughts by saying that sure, once you have a Blackburn under contract, you may as well maximize what you've got. But that doesn't mean shying away from better talent acquisition under some misguided notion that strikeout pitchers don't go deep into games. Because, they do.
Yeah, my bad. I somehow misread what you wrote, to mean that this was the threshold for being happy with him and his princely two-year salary. Snark withdrawn.
I believe Deduno is not on the 40-man at the moment. Probably that factors into a decision to bring him up. Even if someone goes on the 60-day DL, adding Deduno means someone will have to be dropped when that injured player comes back, and while no future Hall of Famers are at risk of being lost on waiver claims, you still don't make that move lightly. Hendriks or Gibson seem more likely starter candidates to get an early call if needed; Wood (currently injured) or Robertson among relievers.
Up to an age in the mid-twenties, I probably want the Ace-like stuff, in case further progress turns him into an actual ace. Past that point, I think I agree with you.
I plan to post updates mostly when there are highlights involving Joe. Today's 1-0 loss to Scranton/WB had him going 0-4 with two strikeouts, lowering his batting average to .171. Not so good. See the ball, hit the ball, and get'em tomorrow, Joe.
Aaron Hicks for the game so far: 2 walks, 2 runs, 2 outs to third base. OBP=.500, SLG=.000, OPS=.500. Good game in some respects, but if he gets sent down he may mutter the old Metrodome mantra: Walks Will Haunt.
It's way too easy to chalk this up to his growing up by about 5 years after that cracked rib incident, but that's the direction I'm going with this anyway. Good start to his season.
Wow, Escobar has exactly one game of RF experience in the minors and 1 game of LF in the majors, and they roll the dice with him. Still Plouffe isn't that much more experienced out there. Short handed. Ugh. On the other front: can the bullpen hold this 3 run lead for 3 more innings? Swarzak striking out the side in the 6th is pretty cool.
