    Sure. Once in a while there can be an outlier. Also, in 1962 talent wasn't available in the same way as now, for a variety of reasons, chief of which would be the reserve clause; it could be that a replacement level team would win 30-35 in that environment.

    Don't overlook the Astros. It's hard to repeat but they have a shot.

    If they take away hits, it should show up somewhere in the record, and should be measurable (even if indirectly). What way of verifying a middle infielder's hits-taken-away do you like, instead?

    Meyer strikes me as the one of our three most likely to wind up embarrassed by that comparison in the fullness of time, but of course all three could, and conversely for any of them to actually achieve rough parity with their comp will be awesome.

    There is one aspect to bringing up a budding star a little early that isn't covered by any of this: it's good advertising to the next generation of player. Say you draft a tough-to-sign high-ceiling high school kid in the 6th round. He's just going to say no thanks if he believes that he'll spend the next 7 years in the minors or whatever, and will go to junior college without even listening to your bonus offer and hope for better draft luck the next June. Ditto for signing young talent from off our shores, if they have any other teams also in the hunt. This shouldn't overly drive your strategy of course. But you gotta hold a little hope out there.

    Threads past their "best by date" sometimes get like that. We'll monitor here of course, if somebody brings up a serious point, but maybe starting a new thread focused on a particular concern will work better by now.

    The "moment" for Morris's game might be when he came back out for the 10th. A real "wow" moment that still sends chills of anticipation for me. As an iconic moment, it is different than the others mentioned, as it wasn't yet a done deal, and it only becomes iconic because of the final result.

    It's exciting. I highlighted the word value because for me that's what the key is. If you can sharpen the estimates of the value a player brings in all the facets of the game, the better your decision making will be. And applying analytics to where the value is highest, for instance in understanding and preventing injuries to prospects, is the most important of all.

    I didn't read either one that way. Brian has: Chief has: I read these as "different". And certainly not "things aren't any different there", to which I was responding anyway. They can speak for themselves of course if they see a need.

    An intriguing statement. It was a little tedious going back year by year in b-r.com, cost me probably 5 minutes because I am not a l33t database dude, but the dry spell looks like it went back to 2004, when Jason Kubel and the immortal Terry Tiffee made Twins fans smile (a little more) in September, and not at a level Parms and Pinto reached.

    Where? I can't think of anything like that since I started moderating in June. If moderation were mostly about explaining to a new member why a thinly veiled poop joke didn't get bleeped in a game thread, the job would be a snap. / wait, what, someone veils their jokes in the game threads?
