1. Perkins should make the team, Dozier most likely will be selected as a reserve, and Mauer will not make the team but he is the "Ambassador" for All-Star Weekend, so he'll be around for the game whether he's on the team or not. It would be neat if Suzuki was selected as a reserve as well, but I don't think that will happen.
2. From the looks of it, you can probably get a pretty good seat for the futures game for $100 (or less). I might decide to do that, actually. I am tempted by the hype and the cache of the All-Star Game, but I can't justify spending hundreds of bucks. I'd rather spend that money on a plane ticket somewhere.
3. I don't have a problem with Guerrier on the ML roster - except that he's one of 13 pitchers. The Twins have no bench flexibility, but more importantly, they don't even have a healthy starter for all 9 positions. Only 2 active outfielders at the moment, so hopefully that move is coming soon.
4. Awesome. Escobar in Left. Wait. Why? Gardy had to get Florimon's bat in the lineup?
5. I took a glance at stub hub and some single tickets for standing room only are north of $500. "cheapest" tickets for the SRO are about $330. Home Run Derby tickets were starting at $175 or so, but it looks like there some halfway decent options for the futures game. Ticket King has roughly the same with cheapest tickets ~ $500. Hey, will they do that same promo for ASG tix as they do for the regular season?
6. Well, it is to be expected during a rebuilding effort to have guys on the way up under that prime age. The Twins are a season or two away from "too many" outfielders, but that's certainly not a problem today. I think it's just something the team will have to struggle with this season. We don't know who they offered contracts to this offseason (or how much they offered), maybe they tried to get some of those marginal to useful guys like Chris Young, Rajai Davis, etc. but didn't think they were worth the $8 - $10 million contracts that they ended up signing for to be depth for the team.
7. Is it a misguided attempt to copy the Rays' success? I'm all for roster flexibility, but the talent and athleticism has to actually be there for it to work. A player can be an exceptional athlete, but it doesn't mean they can play out of their regular position with the same skill level.
8. LF - Kubel CF - Fuld RF - go directly to Herrmann / Colabello, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Arcia and Hicks being out are really cramping the Twins' style right now. Kubel is passably ok as a left fielder, but wouldn't be better defensively to have Hicks and Fuld in Left and Center, and Kubel in right? Offensively Kubel, Fuld, and Arcia (when healthy) is probably the best the Twins can get right now.
9. Honest question - what is the ideal outfield (defensively) for the Twins using healthy players on the 40-man roster?
[/TH][TH=class: playernameHead]Outfielders B/T Ht Wt DOB
31 Oswaldo Arcia http://mlb.mlb.com/images/team/icon_dl.gif 15-day DL * L-R 6'0" 220 May 9, 1991
1 Sam Fuld L-L 5'10" 175 Nov 20, 1981
32 Aaron Hicks http://mlb.mlb.com/images/team/icon_dl.gif 7-day DL * S-R 6'2" 190 Oct 2, 1989
67 Max Kepler * L-L 6'4" 205 Feb 10, 1993
13 Jason Kubel L-R 6'0" 220 May 25, 1982
16 Josh Willingham http://mlb.mlb.com/images/team/icon_dl.gif 15-day DL * R-R 6'2" 230 Feb 17, 1979
Kenny Wilson * R-R 5'11" 195 Jan 30, 1990

The Twins only have two healthy outfielders on the 25 man roster.
10. I think the other elephant in the room is the infielder in the outfield syndrome that the Twins are suffering from. They were given a get out of jail free card when Bartlett retired, but they have still been running a first baseman in RF regularly (Colabello) and on the radio last night I heard that Gardy has been making noise about Santana or Escobar playing Left Field when Kubel gets a day off at some point this week. "Why?" indeed. You have to have 3 Catchers, but not 3 healthy outfielders?
11. One thing to keep in mind is that Colabello was supposed to be the bench bat - he's getting a lot of at bats right now because Willingham and Arcia are out of the office. His contribution in April was huge, no question about that, but he's being used in a way that he was not intended to be.
12. Someone smarter than me can probably diagnose what's up with Colabello recently compared to his hot streak. I'm assuming his slump is a direct result of MLB pitchers making adjustments and/or finding the hole in his swing. So it's his turn to adjust, and hopefully he can figure out what they are doing.
13. Yesterday : Mauer lined out in his lone plate appearance before exiting prior to the start of the third inning. He figures to miss at least the first game or two of the Twins' seven-game road trip that begins on Monday. Source: Rhett Bollinger on Twitter
14. The Rays definitely favor flexibility. Some teams would argue that players play better when they have a clearly defined role and a routine, but I think the Rays have shown with their recent sucesses that having lots of players that can play multiple positions instead of one utility guy at the end of the bench is an asset.
15. Well. Don't know if we'd say these are "worse" but . . . Boston has 5 catchers on the 40-man (only 2 on the 25) and some clown that can only DH. The Blue Jays have 3 catchers on the 25, and only 3 OF on the 25 (makes sense that they wanted Mastro) Tampa, of course is doing it all "wrong" - only 2 catchers on the 40 Man, and 6 OF on the 25 man roster... The Angels only have 3 OF on the 25 man (and one of them is Raul Ibañez) due to injuries. The Braves are carrying 3 catchers on their 25 man (and Doumit is one of them...), they also have had bad injury luck (4 pitchers on the 60 day DL) The Padres are carrying 3 cacthers on their 25 man and only 4 infielders (Chase Headley is on the 15 day DL). Houston's roster construction isn't terrible in theory, they have positional balance, it's just that with a few exceptions, the players aren't that good.
16. right on - I thought maybe it was mentioned on the radio or tv telecast what the plan for using Santana was (I was at the game on Saturday, and missed seeing/hearing Sunday's game live).
17. Looking at this makes we want to look at all the 40-Man rosters to find one with bigger flaws than Minnesota's.
18. Danny Santana hasn't been on the field yet, has he? Was the promotion just to reward the kid with some Major League catering? I assumed that he would have played in at least one of the Baltimore games. I missed the part where his call up was explained - did the Twins want a longer bench but Nuñez wasn't ready yet? Is Santana expected to play in the Cleveland series?
19. I think it's really Bartlett's place on the 25-Man roster that can be pointed to as the source to all the CF problems. If the Twins picked Presley over Bartlett, then we probably still have Presley/Mastro/Hicks in the system. Instead we have Fuld/Hicks/Kenny Wilson - only two of those have any business on the major league club. If Hicks is out for any significant time, it just stretches everything more. I will say that I think I'd rather have Fuld as the 4th outfielder than either Presley or Mastro. I think as a 2 for 1 deal, I'd rather have Presley and Mastro instead of just Fuld for depth and injury coverage.
20. So... has a corresponding move been made regarding Darnell? The only thing I saw on the Twins website was optioning Kris Johnson back to Rochester.
21. All those walks by Jimenez should be good news for Twins hitters. Assuming the trend of patient at bats continues, I'm hopeful the Twins can take advantage early and put some runs on the board.
22. Not even Bert's "California Math" can make those numbers look good. Darnell's work in AAA so far this year has earned him a chance with the Twins. So, who's getting sent down? Burton? Please say Burton.
23. Rusney Castillo is probably not available to sign at the moment anyway, and even if he was, from the sound of things his services will be very costly. Since the Twins are just keeping the seat warm for Buxton (in theory), my guess is that they will not make any attempt to sign the best CF (Castillo) that's out there right now. Any rumors of potential trade candidates from other teams are probably also out of the question. It's more likely that the Twins will just wait for someone to be DFA'd or otherwise placed on waivers and replace Kenny Wilson with that guy and the carousel will continue to spin with players that are not quite filling the need. I remember not that long ago when the team had "too many" CF. . .
24. Juan Pierre, Andres Torres, and 26 year old Derrick Robinson could possibly be signed as free agents - but those are all Clete Thomas-level signings. There's a reason they aren't already on a 40-Man roster. Maybe there's an international free agent or someone from the independent leagues that could use a look. . . As far as I can tell, Cuban defector Rusney Castillo is still a free agent http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/23/top-cuban-center-fielder-rusney-castillo-defects/ This is all assuming that Hicks needs to go on the DL...
