  1. I think the majority opinion of Gray is that he's a replaceable arm who's had a good deal of luck. Given where he's been and his statistical history, his performance so far looks very fluky. I'm not going to say the Twins should dump him right now, but I don't believe he's turned a corner, either. Best case scenario is that he continues to pitch relatively well and gets spun off at the trade deadline for someone who can help the team for a couple years.
  2. Save face? What's the point of spending $7.5 million to turn a 100 loss team into a 95 loss team? Not to mention that the Twins, if they were even interested, would likely have to pony up more dough than any of those other teams because of the teams you've listed they're the least desirable destination. Just say NO to Oswalt.
  3. I'm all for it. The Twins unis are awfully boring, with the possible exception of the cream-colored home unis. The blue is definitely better than those Pixie Vests they used to wear every time Carlos Silva started.
  4. I've never seen Morneau do that, and he's a much bigger concussion risk than Span.
  5. Denard Span is one of the worst baserunners I've ever seen. We saw a bit there why he has so much trouble getting picked off, but that must be the third or fourth time I've seen him run out of the baseline into center field on a double play ball. Is it too much to ask to slide into the bag and try to break it up?
  6. Add automatic flushers to the urinals.
  7. Throwing an 0-2 fastball inside to Cabrera is awful pitch selection. Capps and Mauer made a bad mistake there.
  8. The option needs to be declined. After that, I suppose the Twins could negotiate a significantly cheaper deal with him, but I doubt he'd come back under those circumstances.
  9. I'm a fan of Manship and I think the Twins would be better off adding him to the rotation than Liriano. No word on who he's replacing? I guess either Burnett goes on the DL or the Twins demote one of their redundant outfielders.
  10. When you're talking about #4 starters, the difference varies by team. A #4 pitcher for the Phillies is very different than a #4 pitcher for the Royals. Therefore the position on the team's depth chart has less to do with value than their actual performance. #5 pitchers are typically replacement level, and are mostly synonymous with AAAA starter or long relievers. The last guy in a 5-man rotation doesn't usually stay in that spot for more than one season, and typically doesn't even last in the rotation for that long. These are fringe starters.
  11. For the right combination of players and salary relief, I say deal him. I think teams are going to be wary of Morneau because of his injury history and the Twins may have to a) accept a bad package of players or take on a significant portion of his remaining salary.
  12. It's pretty clear that Liriano is not part of this team's future. He's not helping his trade value any by being a mop-up reliever, so I think it makes some sense to have him try and close a few games. If he succeeds, suddenly he's a more tradeable asset. If he fails, you haven't really lost anything. That being said, the Twins won't do it because they believe they still have a shot, or they want to make fans believe they still have a shot.
  13. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. In my opinion, the first two years of Twins baseball at Target Field had many carryovers from the Metrodome years. They were built to hit at the Metrodome, with gap-to-gap power and a mostly left-handed lineup. Other teams who had played in outdoor parks forever have loaded up on pull-hitters and a more balanced righty/lefty ratio. That style plays better in any outdoor park. That's where the Twins lagged behind in home run hitting.
  14. Those stats are too limited to tell me anything over a 9-game sample size. Even if they were significant, Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit's home run totals look awfully similar at TF versus all other parks.
  15. When I say it's the players, it's also the pitchers. Did you know that despite playing half their games at Target Field, the Twins pitching staff led the league in home runs allowed in 2011? And I don't see how moving in the fences is going to significantly increase Twins home run hitting when 56% of their lineup is Mauer, Carroll, Span, Revere, and Casilla.
  16. Thanks for doing the footwork on that, it's Friday so I didn't feel like it.
  17. Again, it's the players, not the park. The Twins as a team don't hit many home runs anywhere. And the Twins have played in every Major League baseball game at Target Field. The stats you should really be looking at is road teams at Target Field and how it affects them.
  18. I think the Twins lack of power has more to do with the team they've assembled than the ballpark.
  19. Eliminate the rule that using your DH as a defensive replacement forfeits the DH. Not that I disagree with the rule, I'm just sick of Gardy tossing and turning over it.
  20. If the Twins had a chance at competing, this would be the correct answer. However, I get the feeling that they want Span to play center because moving him to a lesser defensive position may decrease his trade value a bit.
  21. The only thing I have against AJ is that phantom strikeout/passed ball from the 05 World Series. But that's ancient history. I loved the guy when he was here and I don't understand all the booing he gets. He's been a rock-solid player for a long time and has been extremely durable for a catcher. I'd take him in a backup role, absolutely.
  22. That seems a little light on the return. Maybe we could get that fourth catcher AND a AA reliever who could throw through a brick wall if he could ever hit the darned thing.
  23. The Twins will decide they need a proven closer and trade him for Heath Bell.
  24. I don't disagree on any of this. The way I see it, no area of a baseball stadium is sacred anymore. We've got huge advertisements everywhere that I don't particularly like to look at. If it doesn't affect the game and it's not violating FCC broadcasting rules, I don't mind. I don't really get the "slippery slope" argument that if Walters is allowed to write on the mound then players are going to start graffito-tagging the rest of the park with curse words and controversial imagery. Personally I believe that the players are smart enough to know what's offensive and what's not. I blew up my own personal Facebook page because I kept getting friend requests from people I knew but didn't like, and realized they all were reading my personal goings-on. But the connection to Walters' tribute is dubious. I don't think it's about sharing everything with everybody, but as a symbol of inspiration for himself. Maybe he can find a more agreeable way to do that, I suppose. If he were to write *redacted* on the mound, or plant a flagpole in center field then I should hope MLB would crack down on it.
  25. It's a double-entendre.
