  1. Conversely, the Twins don't talk about Joe Mauer's intangibles very much because he puts up eye-popping statistics.
  2. Intangibles get played up for players who don't put up great (or in Florimon's case, acceptable) statistics. TR and Gardy are basically saying about Florimon, "Ignore the tangible evidence that he's no good and take our word for it that he'll be just fine."
  3. Replace Butera with a 24 pack of Diet Rite.
  4. The left field bleachers kind of obstruct the view of left field beneath you, but not as badly as the right field ones did. The big scoreboard is very difficult to see from the left field corner. They've made some alterations to the right field seats this year so who knows.
  5. Liriano had elbow issues before the Giants traded him. That's why they were willing to give him up. What the Giants did with AJ after the trade has no bearing on the trade itself, just as Nathan's contract extension with the Twins doesn't have anything to do with the trade either, and just as the JJ Hardy trade has nothing to do with the Johan Santana trade.
  6. This is the old "Who are you going to get that's better?" argument. When Ron Gardenhire was handed the reins as manager, he didn't have a very impressive managerial track record either (0-0, I believe). Same as those other guys you mention. The Twins could try to bring in Bobby Cox but I don't think he'll want to come out of retirement.
  7. I don't disagree with the premise that Ryan and Gardenhire should be fired. If the Twins were going to do that before the 2013 season they would have done it immediately after the season was over. The dip in talent in the Twins system isn't entirely Bill Smith's fault. Even if you believe TR had basically no meaningful voice in Smith's cabinet, some of the bad drafts and busts in the minor leagues was on TR's watch before Smith even started. As for Gardenhire, I think that it makes sense to bring in a new manager with all the new players the Twins will have coming up in the next two years. Gardenhire himself came in just when the Twins had an influx of talent.
  8. Googling "Rich Harden Best I've Felt in Years" turns up a lot of results. Here's one from 2010- http://seattletimes.com/html/sports/2011145308_apbbarangersharden.html
  9. Might as well forfeit some of the intraleague games while you're at it.
  10. I get that it should be a non-issue, but for our Manager of the Year it's a big issue, worthy of dedicating a 25-man spot for an unlikely contingency scenario. I'm trying to figure out a way to take the security blanket away from Gardy. For the record, I'm pretty sure Gardy's not so much worried about losing the DH as he is about having a pitcher hurt himself trying to bat or run the bases.
  11. Until he's not on the 25-man roster, he may not be THE backup catcher, but he is A backup catcher. I thought the Doumit signing made a lot of sense at the time, but now I feel like it's not as great of a fit as I thought. The problem Gardy had before was keeping Mauer in the lineup at DH when Butera or Redmond caught. Since Doumit's the default DH, Gardy still has the same problem of using a catcher at DH but it's compounded by the wasted roster spot.
  12. A difficulty with building your franchise around a superstar catcher is that the drop-off to the backup catcher is going to be magnified. The difference beetween Mauer and Butera is probably greater than the difference between the starting and backup catcher on any other team. Also your superstar is going to get his catchers' rest so the backup is going to see more playing time than if Mauer was, say, a left fielder. As for Hermann, I think he has a better chance to replace Doumit than Butera.
  13. I think you're being more bullish than I'd be on Dozier and Benson. If Florimon hits like you're projecting him, the Twins can't seriously justify keeping him as the starting shortstop all season.
  14. When Wandy Rodriguez is brought into your rotation, he doesn't replace the #1 or #2 starter. He replaces the #5 starter, in this case, Correia.
  15. I don't really see the wisdom in carrying the third catcher. Doumit's a nice offensive player but he doesn't need to be in the lineup every day. If the Twins could find a platoon partner for Doumit, and make it a point to never have both Doumit and Mauer in the lineup when one of them is the DH, the third catcher becomes a non-issue.
  16. Craig Monroe?
  17. I'm too lazy to do the work on every other team's top 100 prospects since 1996. Maybe every team has that same difficulty. 3 top 100 MI prospects in the last 17 years (Guzman, Rivas, and Walker) isn't going to cut it for any team.
  18. I think Dozier would need to completely embarrass himself in ST in order to not be guaranteed a spot. There's just no depth.
  19. John says he thinks its a mistake to push Dozier to the majors. Doesn't say anything about Mackey presuming that Florimon is a shoe-in. Considering the MI options the Twins have given themselves, I don't see any combination they can roll out that isn't going to be a complete mess.
  20. Why should Dozier need to earn a spot when Florimon doesn't need to earn a spot?
  21. With so many question marks, and the de facto ace Diamond probably not ready for opening day, the Twins will go with the veteran Correia.
  22. Chris Parmelee - .280/.350/.500 and 25 HR.
  23. Not a whole lot of middle infielders on that list!
  24. Unless they're all kids, which I saw once. Then the Dance-Off gets uncomfortable because you're hurting two of the three kids' feelings.
  25. The problem with spending money to retain their own superstars is that superstars need to come up through the system. There haven't been a whole lot of those recently. Also, it's not wrong to spend money to bring in somebody else's superstars.
