Soon enough the smoke and mirrors the Twins rotation has been living off of will wear off. I hope Gibson's up while he still has a meaningful amount of innings left.
I don't think that even the most Bill Jamesiest stat-heads out there really want to listen to Dick and Bert try to educate us about xFIP and WAR. But I also don't think that referencing the stat will convince any traditionalists to change the channel. What are they going to change it to?
I don't think that incorporating more statistics into the broadcast will exclude viewers who aren't familiar with the terminology. It's not like there's a shortage of time, and most of the time the viewers aren't completely locked in to the discussion anyway.
I know about Ortiz and Ramirez and Braun and PED accusations, but in today's MLB I think you have to give the player the benefit of the doubt until they fail a test. I guarantee you that Gomez has passed multiple PED tests. And as for Ortiz blowing up in Boston because of PEDs, as far as we know Ortiz was juicing before he ever got to Boston.
Somehow they're managing to be worse than last year which many of us thought wasn't possible. They've got a ways to go if they want to catch these guys though: 1899 Cleveland Spiders Batting, Pitching, & Fielding Statistics - Baseball-Reference.com
I'm sure one could do a fairly deep analysis of days rest on sinkerballers and their performance by inning if one was so inclined. It may just be hogwash.
I don't know if it really means anything, but Blyleven on the broadcast has said several times that sinkerballers perform better when their arm is a little tired.
I wonder what Gardenhire, who is allegedly managing for his job this season, thinks of the Twins keeping Gibson at AAA in order to potentially save a couple million dollars a few years down the road.
I don't know why you'd move Mauer out of his optimal spot in the lineup just because you don't have a real leadoff hitter. The idea of a "leadoff hitter" is overrated anyway. Hicks will be back there soon.
I love the title of this article... it's so Twins. The Scoops: Twins narrow pick to college pitchers, prep outfielders | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins
He had a very good first half. We can't assume he would have kept up that pace if he hadn't been kneed in the noggin, in fact it's more likely he would have regressed. Morneau has a history of dropping off in August and September, even when healthy. I'm sure we can find lots of examples of very good players who had eye-popping half-seasons.
Which trade would have been fair? The Gomez trade, or the Santana trade? I agree that holding on to Hardy would have made the Gomez trade fair... but like I said before, it really has no bearing on the Santana trade.
I think Gomez has legitimately turned a corner. I wouldn’t be surprised if he winds up putting together a better career than Denard Span. Hardy isn’t really relevant, IMO, but if you want to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, I think Jared Camp for Deolis Guerra was a pretty fair trade.
