    First of all, each game matters. August games and September games all count the same. He was at best an average pitcher for six or seven games (with a huge OPS against that screams luck) before the wheel completely fell off but the Twins were past any deadline and had to keep running him out there while hoping the lineup hit and the bullpen didn't implode over six innings. And I don't buy the veteran impact - that's in the vein of every poor hitting catcher being a great fielder. We make up narratives that are not backed up in fact. Berrios wasn't better because of Colon - in fact he did worse during the Colon era. And isn't Santana veteran presence enough? Teammates rarely say something awful about a guy. He may have been great in the clubhouse but c'mon, you have to play well. He cost the Twins a ton of games - way more than he kept them in. I think he's a fun story but that's it, a story. He certainly isn't a reason to go sign another crappy veteran pitcher. He got brought in because he cost the Twins nothing in terms of prospects and the name value was enough to not alienate the fan base. That's not a baseball move for success, that's an attempt to tread water.

    Yeah, and I'd almost rather see them give Vargas/Park a shot at that bench bat spot. I know neither guy has been amazing but they also have some upside and they don't cost anything new. I'd like to see a run at a top free agent pitcher and maybe one impact reliever whose name is not Brandon Kintzler. Other than that, let it roll.

    I am. The only people attached to their narratives are the people who love Colon. We love the idea of Colon because of his weight and age and nickname but he was a godawful pitcher. He put a 5.18 ERA, an 85 ERA+ and a 5.3 K/9. Those numbers would make any honest fan howl. If that were Kyle Gibson's numbers, people would be frothing at the mouth. Colon was virtually unplayable down the stretch - multiple games where he couldn't get out of the 4th. Those are bad numbers but even worse is that the Twins didn't get to see what they had in a young guy like Sledgers or Turley or even Gonsalves (though I support not pushing him too hard) and they convinced themselves not to trade a C level prospect for someone more palatable (R.A. Dickey jumps to mind). Colon was a cheap move - the Twins gave up nothing to get him and they valued an aging veteran over much better choices.

    Myth #1 is real and the place for the Twins to spend that money is signing their young core and perhaps extending Mauer a few years. That could easily account for the payroll gap. I'm conflicted about #2. So many of the elite free agent pitching contracts turn out poorly and a look at the elite starting pitching doesn't show anyone I feel super confident about. Darvish and Arrieta both have had some health issues. Lance Lynn is more exciting but he's going to be expensive and is 31. Johnny Cueto is super scary if he opts out. I don't know that I want the Twins to go that route. Myth #3: Buxton will mature and get better at this. He's also going to naturally bulk up and that will help some too hopefully.

    Not big bucks but Kintzler seems likely to get a 2-3 year deal with some nice change behind it (a welcome raise compared to his last experience with free agency). It's hard to think that he could have gotten that without being a closer (which netted him an all-star spot). Belisle is a little but more up in the air because he's 37 but he'll likely get a guaranteed contract somewhere, which would seem unlikely without the closing experience given his drop in numbers and age. Without that "I can close if you need me to" narrative, he'd be selling himself as a guy on the downslope. I'm with you on getting someone young with more K potential but even there, the Twins may be able to attract someone looking to bet on themselves for a year by being able to offer a clear path to a closing job. Baseball is changing to value non-closers more but they still give the big money to guys who pitch the 9th. Seems like something the Twins and a free agent could exploit.

    Another thought is to go and find the next Kintzler/Belisle by promising someone who would be unlikely to close games elsewhere that they'll get the chance to on a 1 year deal. Since people still pay for closers, you may get someone who wants a chance to get the big bucks.

    With Polanco, Gordon, Lewis, Palacios, Arraez and Wander Javier coming up the pipeline, the Twins really don't need someone blocking the middle infield. I'm not against going and seeing if Dozier wants to stay with the Twins and will give a discount on a two year extension (with maybe a third year that vests with a certain number of ABs and production?). Anything beyond that is foolish. Assuming he wants to get paid (as he should), I'd prefer to let Dozier play out the final year of this contract. By that time, you should have Gordon ready to go and several of those other guys starting to get up into the upper minors. You'll get draft pick compensation for Dozier so you're not letting him go for nothing.

    People wanted to keep their young starts - the Torii Hunters, Joe Mauers, Justin Morneaus. The guys who would come through the Twins and then go spend their prime elsewhere. Dozier debuted so late he doesn't match that description. We already have most of his prime.

    I was referring more to the fact that he was lynched at age 38. That would give me five more years. The many wives is a potentially solid silver lining but man, getting lynched seems like a high price to pay.

    I had a dream that the Twins had a six run seventh inning punctuated by a Rosario grand slam. If that happens, I'm changing my Twins Daily name to The Prophet. And hoping I don't meet a similar fate to Joseph Smith.

    At least you're consistent and hate both. Two wild cards is better than one but I can see the point for none. What would your preferred way be? Eight divisions (with a little expansion of course)? The old school two division in the AL and two in the NL so only an LCS?

    Surprised by the choices for MVP. I love Joe Mauer more than the next guy but Eddie Rosario plays a more important position and hit better.

    Was there ever any reason not to activate him? It seems like you lose nothing and gain everything. Bring him for the WC. He's got to be more useful than Niko Goodrum (paper today said Twins were thinking about keeping 10 pitchers and Niko or 11 pitchers). No Niko, bring Sano. Like the bat off the bench.

    And not trading for Verlander could be too. And not making Gimenez a starter. You're dealing in the land of what-ifs with 20/20 hindsight. Not useful. Kintzler is currently a 7th inning guy on a contender with a weak bullpen. The idea that he was some savior is ludicrous. Hildenberg took his place and has been great. That's what you're supposed to do when you're a team on the way up - move vets with no upside when guys with promise come along. Tyler Watson is a fun little prospect. He might not make the majors but he's doing okay in A ball at age 20. He's also a starter, not a reliever. Good trade. You woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Somehow I think

    3.) Do you understand who Bob Uecker is? Saying someone isn't Bob Uecker means that they can hit. He was a terrible baseball player. Gimenez put up a .701 OPS with a bit of pop. Garver was certainly better served getting everyday reps at catcher in AAA than languishing on the Twins bench. If they keep Gimenez next year, time to get upset. 2.) Ugh. Why is Dougie worth talking about? He was an overrated Twins player who was let go for not following the FO plan. he complained to the press and most of the info that came out later made him seem like a disgruntled a-hole. This is easily the most overwrought pointless debate on TD this year. And that's saying something. 1.) They absolutely could have swing Santana and chose not to. They didn't get a deal that blew them away and stayed pat. I thought they did a great job at the deadline in not moving Dozier and Santana when there wasn't a can't-turn-it-down offer but making some small moves that did little to hurt the Twins prospects this year while picking up fun pieces for the years to come.

    If they'd traded for a #2/#3 starter they still wouldn't have taken the division. They might be the #1 WC? And that's assuming that you wouldn't have thrown a Rosario or Polanco into the trade, which seems unlikely. Singing is a better idea but even there, hard to see what they should have done. Rich Hill was only signing with the Dodgers. Ivan Nova has had a pretty underwhelming season (though the money isn't bad) and isn't a big fix. Other than that, not a lot out there. It's also easy to look back and say they should have had moves but the Twins expected to have Trevor May and didn't. I'd be upset if they'd blocked him with some #3 innings eater. Overall, a good hands off year by the FO.

    Time for us to return the favor for Houston, which got us in by beating up on the teams chasing us for the past two weeks. I like our chances to get at one with Mejia and Santana going against Salazar and Carrasco.

    I think they could just not hold him and he would take the base. There is something to be said for it hurting the batter too. They have to wait out multiple throw overs and can't get in a rhythm. They also are likely trying not to swing to give Buck a pitch or two and that can leave them passing up some nice pitches or in the hole.

    Pressley threw four pitches, Hildy eight. And Duffey is not shaded in. I now hate these writeups. Tom Froemming has gone from Kirby Puckett the player to Kirby Puckett the retiree. If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom crying.

    I want Gee instead of Turley, who is just plain old bad. Plus, you already have four left handers, do you really need a 5th? Especially since you're bringing all 5 to deal with Brett Gardner? Seems like an overreaction based on 30 points of OBP. Gee will be useful if this turns into a very long game as he's capable of giving you 3-4 innings. Gimenez over Garver. You'll pinch hit for Castro at some point and you need someone better behind the plate. Garver may be there next year but for this year he's too raw for the playoffs. Plus, the bats aren't that different.

    I know we've been talking NYC for awhile now but the Yankees only trail the Red Sox by three games. And the Sox finish with four against Houston, which will be trying to get home field for the playoffs. An even better situation -- the Yankees and Red Sox finish with the same record. They would play a Game 163 to determine who is the wild card host. That would take place immediately after the season and likely pit Sale vs. Severino. The Twins would get an extra rest day and avoid the loser's best pitcher. I think I'm cheering for that?

    I don't know if I agree with this but to play devil's advocate, Colon pitched four times in relief for the 2015 Mets postseason run and did well. Perhaps his funky slow stuff is actually a change of pace in the power playoff atmosphere?

    Disagree. I can see arguing between Berrios and Gibson (Team JO but I can see Team Gibby). I can't see arguing between either of those guys and either Colon or Mejia, both of who are much worse. And even there I think Mejia is significantly better than Colon. The Colon crowd argument seems to be along the lines of "Colon is a veteran and will know how to handle it." I've never loved the argument. Go with the best stuff - it's as likely a rookie will rise to the occasion as a veteran will rediscover something and handle the pressure.

    If you think Colon over Berrios you have not been watching the same Colon starts I have. He's the worst. Berrios should be the Twins #2 starter but I could see Gibson over him.
